A long time ago I was lied to and said that Yuna could also ride with Tidus it wasn't until recently that I learned that wasn't an option, so I always kept getting Lulu because I was always trying to trigger Yuna so I never realized that Rikku was also an option

In FFX there is a hidden value of how much affection there is between Tidus and the other characters. It's changed in different ways, like if Tidus uses a potion on them, they gain affection. There are also those selections you can make to change the affections in dialogue, or when you get to a new area, the first person you talk to out of the group, you gain affection for.

Haha I feel the same way. I've played through the game about six times since It came out and five times I've gotten Lulu, and once I gotten Rikku. I Didn't think it was possible to get Auron or Kimahri! I also just found out about the four or so other scenes that are affected by affection levels. My childhood is a lie!

I used to play this when I was younger and ALWAYS got to ride with Auron. I didn’t realize you could get this cutscene with anyone else for a long while. But then when I did get it with someone else, I wanted the one with Auron back lol

I think that's a nice thought, and possible. I also think Auron likes yanking Tidus' chain. Not to be mean, it's just like a big old dog going *cuff* on the young pup now and then. (For example, that convo where Auron says, "I heard you were something of a crybaby", or the one where he says, "you're the one running.") There a lot of times when Auron leaves Tidus frustrated with his cryptic comments, because he's trying to get Tidus to think for himself and not just rely on Auron.

Yes, I did. It's a cute touch. I had to go and write what Lulu and Rikku were chit chatting about there. Lulu seemed to be trying to cheer Rikku up just before this ("you've done nothing to apologize for") so I imagine a big sister pep talk.

Sam Ravenoak It's a hidden feature in the game called Affection mechanics. Tidus has a set affection with everyone in the game and the person with the highest affection will be the one he talks to in small cutscenes. Affection can be raised by giving a Hi-potion to that specific person mid combat and talking to said person before anyone else when the whole party is scattered across a room. Affection can be lowered for hitting said person mid combat. Small tip: You can raise Aurons affection when Rin asks: Pardon me is that Sir Auron? and you respond: Nope Wrong guy.

Each time the party's standing around and you have Tidus talk to the other characters, the game adds 2-4 "affection points" to the tally of the first character you approach -- even if they don't say anything back. The game's slightly weighted towards Lulu followed by Rikku, so you have to make a conscious effort always to go to Kimahri or Auron to get them. There's a small exchange at the end of the game (plus Tidus' last overdrive) where Yuna or Wakka could show up, too.

*Very long explanation* Okay, so first off, the game has this hidden thing called "affection mechanics", which means that when you talk to, for example Wakka, after a cutscene before anyone else, his "affection value" will increase. The boost is +4 with Lulu, Yuna and Rikku, while it's only +2 with Kimahri, Auron and Wakka. So, if you want Auron to ride with you in this scene, always talk to him first before the others after each cutscene and his "affection value" will increase by two. Furthermore, at the Thunder Plains Agency, if you speak with Rin, he will ask if the person with them is Auron. If you say "no", Auron gains 8 affection points. Affection values can also be raised in battles by healing or using Guard/Sentinel on other party members, which will increase their value by 1. This must be done with Tidus, however or it won't work. Sorry for long reply, but it's the simplest way I could put it :P Hope it helped, anyway :)

Also the game gives you more opportunities to talk to Lulu, so it's easy to boost her affection levels above the others. You have to make a conscious effort to talk to other characters and then go back to her.

Yup! There's a couple scenes in this game that depend on your character's affection levels. Lulu's the simplest to get, hence why you've always gotten her. The others take a bit of work, but nothing too hard :)

@faiyoake There's four different snowmobile scenes depending on "affection levels".. Whenever there's a point when everyone's standing around, the "affection level" increases for the first character you talk to. You can also adjust "affection levels" by having Tidus toss potions on someone (raising his affinity for that character) or killing a party member (lowering it). There's a few spots where you get different scenes depending on affection levels, including a long Rikku scene in Macalania.

Easy if tedious trick: I think every time you have Tidus attack and kill a character in combat, it lowers affection points with that character, and I know for certain that every time he throws a potion at somebody it adds one affection point. (If you look closely you'll see they turn and look at him). I can't remember if it's just healing potions or whether remedy-type items work too.

Yes you can if you heal and talk to the specific characters enough. You build up points throughout the game to this by talking to them first, giving them items, and so forth. Same sort of principle as the 'date' in the Golden Saucer in FF7.

@MrYhlol It depends on who you talk first with, who you heal during battle, and such. Most people will get Lulu because she's most in need of healing, and she's the most interesting character until Rikku comes along, meaning you'll usually talk with her first.

Whenever you have the chance to talk to the other characters, talk to the character you want to ride with first every time. Also, heal them a lot with Tidus in battle and revive them when they die. In this scene you can get Lulu Auron Rikku or Kimahri. The affection points also count for which girl throws the ball for Tidus in Blitz Ace

Its a thing called affection points. U get certain ppl every time u heal one of them. Like if u healed rikku 20 times instead of lulu before this scene. Thats how u get auron, kimarhi, rikku, or lulu. Does no one read walkthrus? Its not randomly chosen

Lulu - Get in love with Yuna/Lulu Rikku - Marriage/Get in love with Yuna/Rikku It's rather hard though, since you gotta time who you wanna go with (when Yuna enters and the others walks away, you should be able to choose to follow Rikku)

@xoxoslpy I also play International version and played it twice and got Lulu ride twice!! i read somewhere that the girl you used much in battle is the one you'll get a ride with, that also applies with the girl "options" in Guadosalam, and its also the girl who'll throw the ball for Tidus Blitz Ace.... though I don't know if its true, since in my Blitz Ace, Yuna was the one originally throwing Tidus the ball, then later switch with Lulu.. I don't even have any idea how it happened...

There's a lot more to it... there's a guide on gamefaqs too. it also changes who throws the ball to Tidus during Blitz Ace. I love Lulu and got her both times; I talked to her FIRST after every cutscene; Kimahri is the hardest one to get, I think. The best way to get them is to follow one general rule: Always talk to the one you want every time first. Battle with Tidus and them, pretty much all the time. --- and NEVER talk to anyone else (Especially the females) Unless you absolutely have to.
