I am pretty sure this was sung at the Distant Worlds concert in London (as the song is so named). It was amazing hearing the songs live. Especially the operatic ones. You can't replicate it in a recording. Those voices are just incredible!! I went the following year as well. I didn't realise how lucky I was at the time.

I was 29 when this was released! I played from US release til about 2009. RotZ and CoP are what all MMO’s should try to aspire for. I’m still praying that they will have a 75 cap Legacy Server someday. A legit one. Not a buggy sample of it. I admire the fans who play on private servers but it’s just not the same. There’s always something missing. Some strangeness about them.

There will never be an MMO with such beautiful stories, soundtracks, communities, teamwork, and careful developers like this game EVER again. This experience will happen only once. The ppl that made FFXI are such legendary ppl. The atmosphere, the naming of areas "that fits so right" like Ronfaure. The thick story line, I don't think we will see anything that can be this good in another 50 years lol. Not saying the game is perfect, it had its flaws but but is still better than the casual FF14 and other MMO nowadays.

Not to take away from what FFXI was, as I dearly loved that game, but FFXIV is another masterpiece. Yoshi-P has poured so much love into it, and he has a team that do as well. The story-telling of 14 is some of the best of the entire series, the community is one of the best of all MMOs, and the soundtrack has been masterfully crafted. FFXI still is a great game today, but it has a sister that followed closely in its footsteps to stand beside it as another excellent game.

Blessed by light and the burden of shadows Souls abide to an endless desire I may know the answers Though one question I still hear What twist of fate has brought us To roads that run so near? Man ffxi... never had a game hold a place in my heart ever. The community, adventures, struggles, success, friends etc etc etc. Strange that I actually feel almost heartbreak for a video game. I loved it. Not the way people love things like pizza or Ferraris. I love it like a person. Always have and always will. I love you FFXI thank you for the wonderful memories I still think of to this day so many years later. ❤

I played this game for many years, and it was truly some of the best times of my life. Unlike any other MMO I've ever played, the relationships I forged therein were real, visceral, meaningful, and lasting. While I've sadly lost contact with many of those I cared for, some of my best friends came out of Vana'diel and live on to this day. Listening to this music brings tears to my eyes - the nostalgia of past adventures, my friends, and the love for a game unlike any other. "I may know the answers, Though one question I still hear. What twist in fate has brought us To roads that run so near?"

@Eji, I am so sorry. Yes, the youtuber's name is Aphmau, and she liked the character/name and used it as her alias. She also played this game as a child and puts bits and pieces of it in her stories. As for the creator of this video, I appreciate you making this video. The clips fit the music really well! Running around never knowing what I was doing. She even took the time to get me to a level where I could go anywhere without dying. She always made sure I had everything cute. I never know how to feel about this game. But this song always brings back the fun memorys. I watched her complet the quests to get this song. I always come back to this song now and again.

Sounds pretty rough to have that sort of relationship with this beautiful song. I always think of my positive times with this game. Yes addiction could be used to describe a feeling of needing to accomplish things in this game but never at the expense of family. Thankfully when this came out my only responsibility was to myself, but I can see how it could take away a parent who had other responsibilities. Best wishes friend.

It was an entire world, not just a game. No quest markers. The story was just as much your time in the world as it was the narrative. This game implemented systems flawlessly that developers today wouldn't ever attempt. Look up the Divine Might battle. When I did it, it took 18 hours start to finish. Most of this time was putting together the group to do the battle. The fight itself took us 3 hours to get right. To even get into it, you had to trade two items to a fountain during a full moon. This would give you an item used to open the battleground. The fight was against the Ark Angels. Perfect representations of each of the 5 races. Each had two jobs and all the abilities of them.

I started playing that game with its NA Launch when I was real young, ~11/12 range. I've been chasing the high this game gave for a long time... nothing else has ever compared to the quality of experience I had in this game and how it just felt to play, good and bad. Met a few long-time friends in that game, played it almost daily for 10 years or so, occasionally log in still when they're doing Free Log-In events. No other MMO has come close even today, in matching the sense of danger and adventure when exploring areas, or even the immersion I felt going to all the different zones and exploring them, finding weird Notorious Monsters who would absolutely slaughter me and it was awesome. I know I'm speaking mostly of nostalgia, but playing with my brothers and my friends, and making a LOT of new friends I still talk to today.. It may or may not have hit you the same way, it was my first ever MMO experience which his why it hit me so hard.

I played this game for a full decade from NA beta to SoA. I made real friends that lasted and remain even today. I also made enemies with certain players that lasted a long time. I had real life relationships from the game, fell in love, fell out of love more times than I can count. From betrayals to raptures of joy when I won against impossible odds with my closest friends, this was the one game for me. I had thousands of hours logged on multiple characters. It was an experience that I know I'll never have again. It was the only game that I really felt like I was really engaged in the world. I had a turbulent gaming experience with ffxi as far as relationships go, but I really will never forget the experience. It was a powerful world and an awesome storyline. I'll never forget the time I spent in this world. More than that though, I'll never forget the thousands of people I met, whom I never would have otherwise from around the world. Even for just an instant, we came together and kicked butt. I could write a hundred pages with all the stories I experienced in the game and out of the game. FFXI is the best game I have ever played and will ever play and it can't ever happen again. I've played other mmo's but they're empty and disconnected compared to FFXI's community. I really feel like ffxi was a world I went to, I guess kind of like Narnia was for the children of The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe, it's sad to say say farewell, but eventually we all must move on. I'm sort of done with all gaming now, but FFXI will always be a part of me and my life. A time when I was free from the shackles of everyday life to explore and wonder about a magical world. When someone asks me to think of a happy place/time I will always think back to Vanadiel and my journey :) For me at least gaming actually added something to my life and I don't regret a moment of it. I had a life outside of it ya, but FFXI was my main hobby and it lead to a lot of great experiences in and out of it. It was my one link to normality in an otherwise chaotic life full of trouble and problems beyond my control. For me it wasn't really gaming, nor was it a waste; it was an interconnected mess of great times and deep relationships. A fountain of relationships really, both romantic and non-romantic. It was adventure, defeat....oh gosh the defeats lol, and an avenue to meet people from all over the world. I really can't say enough about my experience with ffxi, but I guess I'll wrap it up here. FFXI friends are friends forever!

I haven’t heard this song in over 15 years, nor have I hummed it to myself in that amount of time. I had completely forgotten about this song. Today, at around 8 pm, I randomly woke up from a nap with the melody from the chorus stuck in my head. I went crazy trying to search where the song was from, eventually going through all the games in my library one by one and asking myself “is it from this game? Is it from this one?” Finally, I came across FFXIV in my digital library and thought to myself “wait, this song is probably from FFXIV!” I began to go through all the FFXIV songs and expansion packs one by one looking for the song… Then I realized…wait… is it actually from FFXI?!? Then I immediately realized it was Distant Worlds. Crazy how this song came up from the recesses of my mind for no reason on a random day after not having heard it for nearly two decades….

Ahhhhhh... This brings back so much memories of the time I spent on FFXI. Great job on this video, you did such a fantastic job on matching the music with the scenes! It certainly made my eyes a little watery! Ahhh my eyes are sweating!

I haven't played any of the FF games, (which I've heard are amazing) and I did learn about FF through Aphmau (which is ironic, because her name originated FROM FF), but I just have to applaud (virtually, I'll do it on the other side of the screen. xD) the creator of this video. You did an amazing job. This was absolutely beautiful. Her voice is amazing, and the images go perfectly with the.... sound.. of the song. I just realized I'm about 8 years late to see this video, but whatever. xD

I'm happy to have been apart of, in my opinion, a historic MMO like this. Many MMOs have stood the test of time, and definitely influenced many players too; but I dare say, FFXI is unique experience like none other, in it's hay day. Even with the success and popularity of FFXIV, it could never hit that itch nor that same feeling FFXI has given me as I transverse throughout the lands of Vana'diel.

The "Distant Worlds" symphony at the Sydney Opera House was great. This ST is so touching. 2:37 when the choral backing comes in - just magical!

The good ol' days...this video brings back some good memories. There is a new expansion set to release in 2013. For those who wish to return, now would be a good time.

I'll always remember the in-game version of that song playing, as a mule mithra (which oddly enough became my main later), on top of a tombstone (I think it was near King Rampere's tomb or something). One of the best atmosphere song in there. Ahh the memories !

The graphics for FFXI are very underrated. For a game that came out in 2002, it's glorious. I miss FFXI, but there's no going back. I'm just glad to see Vana'diel is still beautiful and I look forward to exploring Eorzea.

I played FFXI for about four years before quitting. I like to think the ridiculous amounts of nostalgia I feel for the game stem from the fact that it was my first MMO. But then I hear this music and I'm reminded of how much ambiance the game had. No matter what level you were or what quest you were doing, you always felt like PART of Vana'diel, instead of just playing a game. I play WoW, and it's certainly easier to level, but WoW- hell, NO other game pulls you in like FFXI did.

FFXI is the only MMORPG ever to have an ending theme song and cut scene; the most emotionally moving one in the genre too Truly one of a kind. I'm glad I stuck around long enough to finish the Promathia storyline.

Being it and online game since 2002, it has beautiful scenes ingame, i mean there were so many details. Its my very 1st online mmo game and i used to spend alot of time going through the cities just to see stuff and do nothing lol. This video reminded me that and got chills :)

The game still looks good to this day even for it's time. It's a shame it couldn't hold it's own against WoW because there was so much more they could have done with 11 (jumping, flying mounts, pvp, open world, etc.) that would have further improved what 14 ARR is now. I especially liked the soundtrack from 11 though. Arguably the best in the series.

People need to keep posting their character and server on their comments, this is a beautiful song and well worth the struggles of completing CoP, it may have lost it's challenge now but back then you knew you had accomplished something. Tidis - Cerberus (formerly of Hades)

I was always too young to fully understand this game during the many years I played on my ps2 and xbox 360. I contimued to play in the world during the ff14 1.0 era. sadly I jumped to ff14 when 2.0 dropped and never looked back as I forgot all my ffxi info. I will always remember my friends from back then. The ones I will never run into again. BadgerMilk the Taru and Dorito the Mythra. You two were my best friends!

Ffxi is basically life. I always think about it. It was my first mmo but everyone is gone everyone I knew even met an ex on this game. All that there is left now are memories of hours and hours of partying together outside the airship killing those little guys with white hats and being happy about it of me thinking I was slowly becoming a real samurai irl or the Japanese sentence that would tell them I’m not from America I’m european to get invites. Anyway I miss you all.

This makes me sad........... Then fond warm memories of endless hours, camping in places like Quicksand Caves, Bibiki Bay or fishing in the moat of Chateau d'Oraguille in San d'Oria come to mind and I start to smile. This biggest impression left on me was my "Linkshell", being a GM and the people that I got to meet from all over the world, even learned some Japanese. Final Fantasy XI being my first MMORPG to play will never compare to others, its in its own class =)

@vamina12 yeah, I was waiting for One Winged Angel all night, I think everyone was. That one guy who yelled out "ONE WINGED ANGEL!!!" when Nobou took the stage at the end made me laugh. But yes, her singing was great. I actually never heard this song before it was performed last night but I fell in love with it.
