Ignis is a truly well-written character with psychological depth and a complex, atypical moral: notice how he declares that the world has no meaning for him without Noctis, which is such a bizarre thing to say for a Final Fantasy hero. In the base game, we learned to know him only as a mild-mannered, serious and reasonable man, but Episode Ignis adds a new dimension to his personality, in my opinion, showing us that his practical and rational attitude is not his one and only quality. When it comes to Noctis, Ignis becomes reckless, impulsive and desperate: nothing has more importance than his safety for him. I believe that the relationship between those two is the epitome of the real friendship: a profound bond between two akin souls that overcomes the psychological barriers of one's persona. There is so much beauty in this game, and characters like Ignis make it shine some more...

Honestly, when I finished the game originally, I felt it was the perfect ending. In a totally fresh and unbiased opinion. Now? I still believe that. However, the only thing that would make it better is if Luna didn't die, then this ending + Luna - Prompto And ardyn was forever raped by daemons or however it's spelled. Because screw that guy in particular.

For those who think of plot holes: 1. Ravus managed to escape when Ignis and Ardyn went to the keep. Helping Noctis, Gladio, and Prompto to catch up to Ignis. 2. Ignis managed to kill Ardyn "Temporarily". Slowing down the starscourge, also giving Noctis more time to absorb the power of the crystal fully. 3. Noctis uses his regal authority on the crystal to spare Ignis. I believe, King Regis indirectly do the same (Like how Regis allows Nyx to use the ring). 4. As Noctis is in his full power, he managed to defeat ardyn without sacrificing himself. Also, Ardyn was underpowered as he didn't have enough time to "Absorb daemons and accumulating his powers". Luna is still dead tho. At least it's a happier ending.

Ravus did lose his sister that much is true, but the empire that killed his mother is now gone. Losing loved ones does not invalidate any happy endings. Noctis and Ravus will move on from their deaths and become stronger as a result.

I guess, this ending is a bittersweet but it's more hopeful than the canon ending. In this one, Noct doesn't stay in the crystal for ten years and is there to help his people and find out a way to end Ardyn without sacrificing himself. Ravus goes from stop being borderline suicidal and misanthropic after his sister's death and finds a new lease on life. Sure, Luna is still dead but I assume that he's happy that Ravus found peace and that Noct didn't have to kill himself (Well, I assume she'd be happy because she didn't have much screentime or character in the game. People just talked about how awesome she was and it really rubbed me the wrong way) and plus she gets to hang out with Nyx in the afterlife, someone who she actually interacted with on-screen and had actual chemistry with!

For those of you who are wondering why Noctis survived in the alternate timeline ending it's because Ignis used the power of the kings too defeat Ardyn and removed his immortality Thus Noctis didn't need too kill himself in order too fully destroy Ardyn in the after life. Once Ardyn came back Noctis killed him off and brought the light back too lucis and reclaimed his kingdom. Ignis would have died but Noctis used his authority and power as the king too command the crystal too spare him. EDIT: If theres flaws in my theory please let me know.

Same thing that was gonna happen too Ignis before Noctis came along and saved him. So basically anyone with a strong enough will can use it i guess but Cor avoids it because he knows it's basically suicide in exchange for temporary power.

Jamie McElwain The storyline itself said Ardyn was the cause of the darkness and was stated that only the power of the king could kill someone immortal I.E why Noctis had the past kings kill him so he could enter the afterlife and finish Ardyn off. But since Ignis used the power too defeat Ardyn he removed his immortality so all Noctis had to do was finish him off in the final battle too remove the darkness since the man who caused it wasen't immortal anymore. But then again thats just a theory on why Noctis survived. THAT or there was a whole other solution too get rid of the darkness without Noctis dying that we never got too learn about since in the main timeline Ardyn manipulated the crew throughout the whole game and kept them from finding an alternative method since all he wanted was too get rid of his bloodline and the crystal in the first place. So why not guide Noctis into his own death? Ardyn is a major strategist.

This is just horrible writing. They simply changed the goalpost out of nowhere without any explanation. And no the story does not make it clear that ardyn is the darkness. In the trailers it was shown multiple times that the starscourge is actually a phenomenon on the moon which brings monsters to eos. The main game was veery ambigious about what the starscourge actually was. We dont even know what ardyns goal is anyway. It seems to me rather that he WANTS to be killed by noctis i.e. for him to become the chosen king. So why would he hide ways from him to fulfil this goal? This ending just makes no fucking sense and is copout by the writers because fans kept whining about wanting a good ending.

So it's not a plothole, it's perfectly coherent to the pre established lore. It just didn't happen in the main game because of different circumstances.

When the ring was used in Kingsglaive a price had to be paid for it because only the king is actually permitted to use the ring whenever he wants. Nyx gives up his life to use the full power of the ring. The same thing happens in canon where Ignis only loses his sight because he only used a portion of the ring's power. In this alternate ending though a price is never paid. Ignis uses the full power of the ring against Ardyn here, which, according to Kingsglaive, means he should have to die, but than he doesn't just because Noctis asked the crystal to not kill him. Furthermore it was said in the game that Ardyn and the darkness could only be defeated if the Chosen King of Light sacrificed his life to eliminate the Starscourge and restore the light. In this alternate ending, none of that happens. Ignis fights Ardyn with the power of the ring, wins and receives a get out of death free card because Noctis asked the crystal really nicely. Then Noctis gains the full power of the crystal, defeats Ardyn for good this time and somehow saves the world without sacrificing himself because reasons....This ending completely ignores the rules established in the game and film proper simply for the sake of creating a happy ending.

The price was about to paid, Ignis was about to die, he just didn't because Noctis used his authority as king and ordered, not asked, the crystal to save him. And regarding Ardryn, Ignis didn't destroy him by overwhelming his power with brute strength or something like that, that would be impossible. What did happen was that Ardryn had lost his immortality, thereby finally allowing for him to be finished off. Without Ardryn, there are no demons, nor darknesss, nor any other obstacle for Noctis to attain the full power of the crystal and restore the light. It's all there, they just didn't flat out said it to the player's face because it would be boring to have a 15 min exposition cutscene of Noctis explaining it all right after the climax of the story. And again, there was a reason to why this wasn't included in the main game. The circumstances here were *different*, thus allowing for a wild card to appear and the story to go on an unpredictable direction, something that would not be possible in the ""main story"". You can't analyze this ending alone without comprehending episode ignis in it's entirety, and it's so complicated that some parts of it are canon, and others are an alternete continuity. That's why i'm not surprised to see that so many people got the wrong idea about it.

While I usually like endings where everyone is happy and alive, the Alt-ending does undermines Ardyn character and goal just a bit as well as one of the major themes of this game: Sacrifice.

The beautiful thing about ffxv is you play through this amazing game all the way to the end just to sit on basically a throne of the ashes of those you love. Almost everyone has suffered greatly, all just to die. And then, to reward those who not only beat the game, but stuck with it after 4 dlc's, your final ending is one of happiness. Iggy does not lose his sight, prompto assumably never had his solo dlc and following identity crisis. Everyone lives. For all intents and purposes noct and his friends finally get the ending they deserve

Dilana Karatas While that may be true, the fandom hates Luna for her love for Noctis because she gets NO character development outside of being "the main protagonist's love interest". Her entire character is built around that love. And thus, she basically has no personality traits or aspirations outside of things that involve Noctis. Ignis, however, has a very fleshed out personality, and he GROWS as a character when his feelings and love for Noctis are explored. Platonic or otherwise interpreted, you can tell that Ignis loves Noctis with every part of his heart and soul. And I personally think Ignis' love is actually stronger than Luna's, because Ignis couldn't stand to live in a world without Noctis and he fought his hardest to PREVENT Noctis from sacrificing himself, while Luna guided Noctis to his fate because it was her duty to do so. She basically ALLOWED him to die, while Ignis saved his life. That's why people are pissed at Luna, because she, more or less, indirectly killed Noctis by leading him to his sacrifice. I disagree. Sure the original ending was sad, but it was incredibly moving to see Noctis grow from a self centered prince and become a true King, ready to sacrifice all for his people. Now this ending completely shoots that character development to hell for the sake of a happier ending. (though whether this is even happier is honestly debatable since Luna is still as dead as ever) I'm usually not a fan of bittersweet ends, but it really worked for the story of XV. This honestly feels horribly out of place to me.

DevilHunter1994 you have a strong point ;), seeing Noct as he moves on from being a reckless prince to a badass king and basically saves the world is an experience that player will forever cherish, and your right there no character development here since Noct matures just by seeing Ignis half dead, and it's really messed up that Luna still dies and Noct ends up alone when becoming king in this this ending while in the original he makes a great sacrifice and reunites with Luna which is something I'm very sure most of us were glad to see in the end of FFXV, so yeah I respect your opinion since this happyish ending was most likely made for those who didn't like the true ending

Noctis lost everything, from his home, his father, his beloved, his friends suffered, and at the end he just died. That doesn't make any sense. It's a true ending for the sake of fans who played so many hours and spent a lot of money just to see their most loved character dies for nothing.

@@arieswildchild The point is that Noctis' sacrifice saved the world and everyone on it. Noctis began the game as a pretty self centered person. He really just cared about himself, his friends, his family and Luna. Sure he wasn't mean to other people, but he didn't really care about the larger problems facing the world. His character arc throughout the whole game is about him learning to stop focusing on himself and his own pain so that he can see the bigger picture and realize that everyone in the world is suffering too. His character arc is about finally learning to act like a king and make the ultimate sacrifice for the good of his people and the world. A tragic ending was the perfect way to end his character arc. Also, Noctis didn't lose everything. He got to spend eternity with the woman he loves in the Afterlife. He ends the game perfectly happy with where he is and what he has done.

No, it isn't. The whole game established the prophecy of the true king and the prophecy also being the condition for Ardyn himself to get final peace. With the line of lucis alive, ardyn does not get his salvation/peace. It's not only about ridding the world of darkness, it's also about granting peace to the immortal man led to be the avatar of darkness by the preordained designs that neither the kings nor the man chose.... Without a proper death, Ardyn cannot be reunited with aera either. The Canon ending shows us noctis and Luna in the afterlife, but presumably, Ardyn and aera are together again too....

Because it kills the story. All of the consequences are completely gone,which is bad in a story. In the end there weren’t any sacrifices. Noctis does not die ( so how could he kill Ardyn ? ),the story builds up around this. And Ignis doesn’t seem to go blind too,even tho he took a blade on his eyes. And how does he live after the fact that he sacrificed is live in the contract ? And why does Ravus still lives ? was he not killed several minutes ago ? And I could go on. But it sure is a greaaat alternative ending,I loved it. Also what Ardyn just said may lead to what his dlc will be about.

I interpret it this way: The scene at the end when you see Umbra? He turns back time - that‘s why the game shows the guys pushing the car again - and he just keeps doing that, over and over and over, till everything turns out right and we finish in the timeline where Noct and Luna marry. No one died, all good :)

Yeah the original ending is the better ending. This new one honestly feels out of place to me. Instead of Noctis becoming a great King naturally as time goes on and learning to sacrifice for the sake of others instead of only thinking of his own problems, here he just becomes a good King after seeing Iggy nearly dead....okay. Also whether this is even a happier ending is honestly debatable. Luna is still as dead as ever, so I guess Noctis will be the last of his line either way since I doubt he'll accept marriage to anyone else. Then there're Ardyn....seriously how did this work? Okay Ignis destroyed his physical body, but why does that matter? Ardyn can just come back. He even says that all Ignis did was set him back and that he will have his revenge. That means Noctis is going to have to sacrifice himself eventually one way or another if we're still adhering to the previously established rules of the story.

Well they are both Izunia, even Noctis. The english dub is a bit confusing in that part. If you look at the other dubs including the japanese you will notice it. Seems like Lucis Caelum is actually just a title. Izunia is the last name.

Main story and all other "episodes" dlc spoilers, beware: I like to think that in the canonical story during the 10 years crystal, Bahamut said "Many sacrificed all for the King, so must the King sacrifice himself for all". The "Sacrifice" doesnt refer to entirety of Lucis, but rather than the 3 bros, as theyre the only one at the time that truly "acknowledged" Noctis as their "King". They're Noctis only and most loyal subjects after Regis kingship being transferred to him / the time he put on the ring. And in the canonical story by sacrifice, he meant: - Gladio someone who swore to protect him, losing his faith over the king he pledged to - Prompto, "betrayed" by his best and most trusted friend - Ignis, someone who has always by his side, sacrificed his eyesight to protect him - Also maybe Ravus, who finally acknowledged him as the true king, having to die to protect his father legacy As all of these events never happened in the Extra Verse, (train ride never happened, Ravus didnt die, Ignis has his eyesight) there is no sacrifice, so theres no need for the king to sacrifice himself. Also how did they beat Ardyn without having to kill him on the "other side"? i like to think it like this - Ignis severely wounded Ardyn during his fight, weakening him and/or slowing the activation of long night, making it possible for them to embark on a journey - To continue on, during the end credits, you can see that Ignis and friends are embarking on a journey while Noctis are inside the crystal, it could be that he's finding a way to beat him without having Noctis to die. By "how" is i dont have a clue, just think of it as a Deus Ex Machina BS (yeah its not very fleshed out) Well, thats my take on this alternate ending, it has alot of holes but so does the true/main game ending

I know this might sound strange...but I kind of like the King's weapons flickering across the screen constantly. To most its probably really annoying while you're focusing on fighting Ardyn, but when you watch it it really gives off that feeling of being something like a power overload and sort of adds to the mood of things.

I didn't really have a favorite personally until Episode Ignis. He feels much more fluid in his movements and attacks unlike Noctis and the rest and now that you're able to change your controlled character in battle in XV, I'll be playing as Ignis once I unlock the node to do so. He was much more fun to control in a two hour span than Noctis was over the course of the entire game. I didn't really like Gladio's control scheme all that much and Prompto, although unique, didn't feel right to me for some reason. Ignis was just perfect though

Nero Knight It’s an alternate path where Ignis sacrifices himself to wield the Ring of Lucii against Ardyn. By killing him here, he delayed the Starscourge and gave Noctis more time to prepare, which allowed Noctis to defeat Ardyn without dying.

Somehow I think what's been said before the final battle with Ardyn is the answer why Noct doesnt die. iggy: for 10 years everything we've done was in preparation for this day noct: and today we finish it. today we walk tall together I think the three bros did something while they wait for Noct to wake up, and the fact that Noct's not walking alone to kill Ardyn brings out the change.

MUCH better ending. Putting on the ring was something that was setup as a big factor in kings glaive and half the game story. In the canon story it is so underwhelming, and Noctis doesn't even make an active choice to put it on. His hand is forced (literally) which ties into the tragic end of accepting fate and duty as a king. Here Noctis makes an ACTIVE choice as a leader for the first time. We actually see growth because his immaturity has almost cost him his best friend. This is more in line with his character as a king. I get how duty is the main theme of the main story but I prefer a story where the characters have a choice to be heroic rather than destined to it by fate.

My Theroy is Ignis was able to Weaken (Not Kill) Ardyn which made it so Noctis did not require the full power of the ring because Ignis had "Provided" the sacrifice it required to remove his immortality.

I think it's because he accepts his responsibility fully before going into the crystal, rather than being forced into the crystal and accepting his fate after he returns. And we can see that Ignis prepared for years for Noctis's return in this ending, where he has the knowledge of Ardyn's identity and what must be done to defeat him. I think that based on all this it's possible that Noctis just gets to become more powerful with the ring and kill ardyn without having to die. Although i'm not sure how that works since the prophecy states that the chosen king must give his life after so many give their life for him.
