Final Fantasy XVI should not be avoided by any means if what you see intrigues you, but it's drastic overhaul of systems and rigid pacing made for a journey that never won me over. Despite epic bosses and fantastic presentation, this ultimately left me feeling sure that this isn't the future I want for the franchise.

I’ve played XIV off and on from the beginning, I participated in that closed beta they did for ARR, well it wasn’t exactly closed I don’t remember the exact stipulations, but if you had played 1.0 you got in automatically. I said all of that just to say that I am very acquainted with the game. So, I knew that some of its dna would be in this game of course, but I did not expect it to be the parts of XIV I hated the most. The quest design is such a slog, walk 5 feet, queue 5-8 minute long cutscene, walk 3 feet, queue 5 minute long cutscene. That drives me insane and makes me resent the game. This reviewer is one of the few I’ve seen even mention XIV in his review. I wish they hadn’t structured the quest system in such a way as to give me whiplash from the intense highs and the looking-for-star-dust lows. Sorry for the length and rant, I didn’t exactly mean to, I just wanted to agree with you lol

I haven't been this invested in a video game story for a while as I am an older person now. FF16 hooked me in and kinda bring me back to my golden days of chasing a game's story like when I was young. It's just so magical. Even as a linear cinematic game, i think its better than last of us 2 and the new God of wars which kinda bored me not even half way through. It's probably the best linear cinematic game to date.

Agreed man, to me 7 remake is the natural evolution of ff combat. You can mix and match gear, have roles, jobs/builds, more strategy, summons, and most importantly, PARTY BASED COMBAT. God, I really hope ff 16 is not the future of ff.

I recently finished FFXVI and agree with so much here! The key thing I was missing most was the feeling of having a party. Even if they kept the combat mostly the same, I think I would have enjoyed FFXVI more if they are incorporated the character switching from FFVII Remake, along with being able to gear up and level the other characters. Just those changes would have gone a long way to increasing my enjoyment.

The ENTIRE point of making it this garbage game of thrones copy paste without all the stuff that made game of thrones good, like good writing and politics that NEVER required you to read data entries every cutscene. It was SUPPOSED to be truly mainstream, they literally made it FOR western Audiences. And guess who also despised it?? Japan. Japan hated it. The exact opposite of the reaction in the states. And you can look at their social medias to confirm that. The game is flat out bad and lacks any depth what so ever, and has zero proper rpg mechanics. You don't even get special weapons. They all have the exact same boring two stats, that go up entirely linear. It sold poorly. And they'll never do a game like this trash again. Good.

This game combat is not only easy boring but the story is incredibly , incredibly bland and boring outside of what the demo shown, the game is a very stale and by the book medieval with very little "fantasy" elements, and all the side characters that used to be very well written and interesting in final fantasy games, here, are completely absent in character, persona, identity, this game mixes in a lot of popular culture phenomenon of the last 10 years without finding something to BE in it, nothing is going to the edge or exploit itself over the line and demark itself as being "yes, that is what ff16 is" , game has no presence, no identity, just like the main character that becomes very smooth and erased as far as his personnality or character goes.

I’m so glad you and Jake had similar thoughts. Bought the game day one and it had all glowing reviews, I thought there was something wrong with me. Honestly, I still think this is a 9/10 game and I don’t regret buying it, but I agree I hope they don’t make Final Fantasy an action game for forever. The combat is fun, but I want my historic RPG franchise to be an RPG. I liked the cutscenes and the pacing. I even enjoyed putzing around on the side quests. But idk, when Marlboro didn’t devastate me with Bad Breath it just didn’t feel right.

I'm with you on this. The game is just too shallow for being a mainline title in the series. There is 20-40$ of content. The story is worth experiencing but not for 70$ There is just no unique experiences outside the main story quest. They stripped the entire game down and left out all the RPG experiences you would expect from a mainline title.

The amount of actually unique gameplay experiences you get in ER for the release price of $70 is staggering. FF16 is mainly a cinematic story experience, which btw is not bad imo, nor is combat, but there is very little in the way of unique gameplay experiences outside that main story quest. If you are someone who has played yoshi p's ff14 main story expansions, then you will see that FF16 is basically a polished, high fidelity MSQ from 14 with action/cinematic combat and that's about it. Period.

I actually really like that every Final Fantasy game is very different and unique. It keeps the franchise fresh and interesting. FF16 is the super linear and action focused one and there's definitely people who will love this one the most. I haven't played the game yet (played the demo tho) and it seems great and like something I would enjoy a lot.

Yoshi-p is used to make games for casual players (like ff14) and FF16 is all about being casual. And that's why it's a bad FF game for me. No open world, optional dungeons, hardcore bosses, lack of minigames, no party control, really generic gameplay, no secrets to unveil. I started playing it without seeing any promo about the game because I was like "well, it's a FF game, of course it's going to be enjoyable". I was deeply wrong. The only thing that fits in the FF series there are the Eikons, Chocobos and nothing else. This was the last time I bought a FF game on day one.

Personally, i love the boss fight style where you don't know what's going to happen next. The QTEs didn't make me feel like it was holding my hand anymore than they did in the original God of Wars. These eikon fights were some of my favorite fights across all video games, the way they keep you guessing. I also don't pay much attention to the health bar; maybe I'm too used to ultra hard on Horizon where you don't get one.

The obsession with appealing to, retaining, and then maintain more non endemic audiences that would never play FF otherwise means that FF cannot continue to be FF. I'm liking it so far,but it doesn't really feel like a final fantasy game,feels more like it could be a spin off because it has elements from final fantasy lore like they mention the crystals and the chocobo are in it and there are the eikons like ifrit,shiva,etc. But something just feels off to me for it to be called final fantasy 16. Fair review. Basically agree. Stop taking/minimizing the RPG out of my rpgs. An rpg fan wants more player agency in/outside combat be it builds, gear, story choices, actual magic spell lines, guilds, traits, etc. If an rpg fan goes and plays Starfield they probably do not expect the combat to be better than pure first/3rd person shooters. But they expect better exploration of the world and mechanics. This is not just speaking to Square. This goes out to Bioware and any other rpg IP/company who minimizes the RPG.

Me too this guy and skillup are the only 2 so far that I have seen that mention every complaint I have with the game. Certain people online act like you have slapped them across the face and insulted their mother when you say anything even remotely critical about the game. I’ve never experienced that sort of behavior in a fandom until now and it’s really exhausting because I am legitimately a fan of this franchise for just over 20 years now and being basically gaslit over my comments on the game is crazy and very unappreciated. XVI has gotten me to be super introspective of every previous entry in the series (the only mainline game I haven’t beaten yet is V, which I’ll get around to soon). In most of the previous games there is an illusion of choice. There’s a lot of options available to you, but the super bosses, the pinnacle content which demands you engage with the systems more than anything else, demand hyper specific builds. With XVI I feel there’s more expression than most of the previous games due to being able to kit Clive out in a way that suits your playstyle. To me that really nails the RPG feel. Could the gear side of things be fleshed out more? Could they maybe add some passive skills onto things to give even more options. Absolutely. I do feel like this could be an incredible direction for the series going forward though.

Main issue I have is that some people seem so eager to defend the shallowness of 16. The game is fun in its own right but at least be honest with its short comings. Some of my favorite games have serious flaws and thats alright, it is what it is. FF16 is incredibly shallow.

I think thats my problem with some people these days. They always seem to overglorify how good something is spamming phrases like "Peak fiction, GOTY, GOAT etc..." To me i think this can lead to people having highly inflated expectations beforehand and of course leading them to dissapointment because of the exaggerated high praises they have heard and at worst, can cause a knee jerk reaction calling said thing "mid." This of course can create resentment since obviously it makes it seem like the people buying into the product were mislead.

Right there with you. It's undeniably a Final Fantasy game, but it's not a Final Fantasy game for me. I'm enjoying some things on their own merit, but I can't agree with the extreme overhype that's going around about it. I don't want this to be the future of Final Fantasy either. And I'm a HUGE fan of 14 with over 3000 hours sunk. I just needed some levity, a real party, some variation in enemy and gameplay. It's SO self serious and insistent on being dark and mature, it loses all sense of wonder and joy for me.

I think casually throwing the statement that final fantasy titles are always different, is a bit of a disservice when you consider the development hell that was final fantasy versus 13 aka 15. After waiting for years, fans got half a story in 15, and pieces of story in dlc. So it’s not surprising that people think it’s a step in the right direction for 16 to have an emotionally effective story. Plays real fun too.

100%. I just beat it and it just left me with a weird, hollow feeling inside. I had fun with it (for the most part) but it was a shell of a FF game. The realization that the golden age of FF will never return just sucks. I feel heartbroken by it and think I'm done with the franchise. I'm not even that interested in FFVII Rebirth after hearing it's terrible voice acting. It looks like it has incredible combat but I don't like the new story or the voice cast. Plus, the side quests in Remake were absolute dogsh!t. The censorship throughout also ticked my off.

I think i have to disagree with what you're saying about the side quests in XVI being worse than 7R. You need to go and replay 7R side quests and compare it back to 16. Both games questing design are simplistic but XVI is good at building the world of XVI. I can't think of any meaningful side quest in final fantasy 7R.

The story intro (demo part) was strong but there are some really weird things even immediately following it. Like Clive not recognizing Jill. Also things like Clive being naked for no reason lol. Also the motivations of the characters seem too cliche (and I usually like cliches and tropes btw) and boring. Clive seems completely clueless even though he has served the empire for 13 years between the time jump. Of course many would say this is just nitpicking and I would agree if the story wasn’t the only thing that is interesting about the game. The side quests are bad and the world bores me, I don’t even feel like exploring the corridors.

I agree the cut scenes in the early first act really took a while but then you get to a point where it does open up a little. I am glad this isn't an open world. I do not think I could deal with it being that way. The first act though very interesting was slow for me and I didn't enjoy it. But I find as I progressed I started to like it and I found it had its own rythm. The game isn't for everyone and not everyone is gonna like it. But I personally having so much fun. Last game I played in FF was 15 and 16 surpasses it by so much. I love the story it tells and the linear focus makes sense.

Thanks for giving your honest opinion on this, it’s refreshing to see a more balanced review for a change. I agree with you on all of your points actually, it lets me know I’m not totally off base. The last guy I saw(skillup) was raked across the coals for his and it was plenty fair. There are a lot of things about this game that have disappointed me. The devs are overly self indulgent with their storytelling in the form of drawn out cutscenes for side quests and it’s exact the same way they do it over in XIV. I expected there to be plenty of XIV’s dna at play here, but certainly not the aspects that I hate the most. Like at one point I had just slain what is basically a god and the next thing I have to do is…find some fucking star dust?! Are you kidding me?! After all that, that epic sequence and now suddenly I’m the only person out of the entire hideaway that can look for dirt?! Really? The pacing gave me whiplash in this way. It’s like the devs got in their own way by making these awesome set pieces but not knowing how to take it back down a notch. This is not a bad game, it’s fun, but this is not the engaging and moving FF experience I expected at all. More than anything though, what I hate the most is what basically amounts to people trying to gaslight others online about their experience or opinions about this game. Truly, I’ve never experienced the whole “toxic fandom” thing until this game. Anything less than glowing praise is met with comments from individuals who have suddenly taken whatever you’ve said about the game, valid or not, very personally, as if you’ve just attacked them. Seriously. Critique is a very important part of making art and I have experienced the critique process at art school many, many times and while it can be painful it has almost always resulted in a better piece. I. Am. So. FUCKING.TIRED. OF.THESE.SAME.COMMENTS! These people are rude, condescending, assholes that attempt to invalidate and undermine anyone who says anything remotely critical of this game. Like, believe it or not, some devs listen to fan feedback, I know Yoshida does, and personally I want a better game next time. This one could’ve really been absolutely amazing with a few more tweaks and systems. If no one will shut the fuck up about how perfect this game is Square is going to think it actually IS perfect or something. It’s not a bad game, but as an FF title it just doesn’t do it for me. It feels more like an extremely polished side entry. I suggest these people behaving this way firmly lodge square’s dick back into their mouths and let the rest of us discuss the pros and cons of this game like rational people. You may think I am being irrational myself, and I’d understand you believing that, but the sheer volume of snarky assholes I’ve been met with is overwhelming and I’m sick of it, so I end up being pissed off myself and ranting like i am now. I am fairly extroverted and I enjoy discussing the things I enjoy online. I didn’t start out leaving comments like this, I actually try to be kind on the internet because it’s an easy thing to do and there are actual human being on the receiving end. It doesn’t hurt to be nice. At all. The boisterous and over confidently incorrect, argumentative assholes can fuck off though, I’ve had it with them.

The thing that really gets me angry about this game is the rating. They cut major dark parts of XV's story (like Luna's abuses hinted in one of the trailers) because "a mainline game can't be too dark" and literally the next one has blood and people dying all over the place

I love this FF. Is it my favorite (no). But, I do believe it is a good addition to the series. With that being said, here are my issues with the game. First they have pacing issues. They brought MMO side quest style to a single player game (not a good decision). Second, the had main quest that should have been side quest and they had side quest that should have been main quest. After you swap those out (you know which ones I am talking about) you can get rid of the rest of the side quest. They had a crap ton that was pointless and the reward was a crafting material that you already had like 500 of (which made it even more pointless). Last is you need to pick a lane. Ether be a RPG or be an action adventure. They could have fixed this by just making elements and status ailments during combat a thing. This would have brought a lot more strategy to combat and also would make weapons more important except just a power up in attack and or defense for armor. These things would have made it more of a RPG and would have been more faithful to FF. The other options would be to get rid of half the weapons and armor (have like only 6 or 7). Those six or seven weapons would have a different combat style (like a bow, axe, two handed sword, one handed sword and shield ect..). This would have leaned more into an action combat / action adventure. Everything else in the game I loved. Examples are that it has by far one of the best stories in all of the FF (Only two stories are better is 6 & 7). Also it has the second the best combat (I think FF7R has the best combat by far). Last, It does have the best score of all the FF. Great Game!!!

I was really hyped for this game for the first 5 hours or so. The more I play, the more I see how shallow this game is. I don't mind it being a real time action game, what bothers me is that there is no strategy or tactical elements, and can hardly be considered an rpg. I also feel like the world building has been cast aside in favor of the big blockbuster, cinematic moments. The world is beautiful and the lore is well fleshed out, but if all feels very "look, don't touch" and is overall very static and empty. Not to mention the lack of strong party members, which is a straight up crime in a mainline FF entry. FF has always been known for reinventing itself, but 16 strips away far too many of the core fundamentals that make FF distinguishable.

What do you mean "look don't touch"? You essentially cause everything that happens in the game so you're already "touching" everything. Also you're interacting with a large portion of the world while it's being affected by your actions, showing you first hand how the people are affected by what you do. I definitely agree the party system could have still existed to any extent and I'd be mucb happier. But the world building along with the writing was easily the best part of this game imo. There definitely IS strategy involved but it's more geared toward properly stacking stagger damage/base damage, not so much status effects. More dmc than turn based final fantasy as we know it. Also final fantasy reinvented itself for 13, 14, and 15. No one enjoyed those changes at first if at all, so please quit acting like the "reinvention" part is their strongsuit man.

Got to agree, just completed it after 38 hours with the side quests, and I feel totally empty after playing it, when i finished 15, I felt heartbroken in a good way that it was over, and as to the conclusion. this ending was just absolutely MEH... genuinely dissapointed!

As someone who is a long time FF fan and who is thoroughly enjoying FF16, I will admit that this game does take several hours (~10) to really get going and there are little to no actual rpg elements. In terms of story and characters, FF16 feels less like a modern FF title and more like a classic FF game but with high fidelity visuals and combat. It’s the epitome of “what if we could reimagine FF1-FF5 using current technology.” This is the closest thing to a 90s JRPG in terms of feel I think I’ve played in a very long time.

This is the type of game I wanted directly after following XIII. That said it feels like an old game in that the way linear games have evolved have made this feel outdated. That said, I love the spectacle and the story. And this by far the best looking game I’ve ever seen. If we could retain the presentation and narrative and bring this game to more of jrpg I would love that going forward for the series

I didn’t like 13 at first but after I played 15 I gained a new appreciation for ff13 it wasn’t that bad just too linear and the auto combat was lazy lol but at least it had a complete fleshed out story 😅

I'm the type of nutjob that played Devil May Cry 5 for over 200 hours so this games combat sings to me to where I'm constantly experimenting with different abilities and I'm already losing myself in it 😆

I felt the same way until I got a certain point into the game, and it started to get repetitive. Found some really great tech tho that let me finish fights quickly, but the game was too easy, and the main storyline had so much low budget filler. Also the side missions weren’t worthing spending your time on. Also, while there were some strong characters, there were so many weak characters that you were supposed to like.

XVI sucks ass. The story is just a rehash of XIV and VII. Eikons are used by different groups as weapons of mass destruction like XIV. The mother crystals are the mako reactors of this game, sucking up the lifestream, whoops I meant aether, and ruining the land. So you have to infiltrate and blow them up. Sephiroth, whoops I meant the villain of XVI, wants to summon the ultimate spell to unleash on the planet. This game's plot plays out like a pathetic fanfic.
