2:22 Contrary to popular belief, the reason MD-80s are widely referred to as the "Mad Dog" is due to it being WFAN radio host Christopher "Mad Dog" Russo's favorite airplane. Russo (an avid flyer and plane enthusiast) along with Mike Francesa were part of the legendary sports radio talk show Mike and the Mad Dog which ran on WFAN from September 1989 to August 2008. Us in the sports talk radio community would prefer if you would edit your video to give credit for Russo for coining this nickname.

A magnificent and emotive tribute to a true thoroughbred, the line of which goes back to the DC3. I loved those steep climb-outs - in the back, you could be 10 or 15 feet below the wing whilst in the front the near silence was uncanny - you had to really crane your neck to see the wingtips! MD 80/90 planes have taken me as far south as Ushuaia (55 S) and as far north as Longyearbyen (78 N) - some of the most memorable flights I've ever made.
@wotan109504 жыл бұрын
Great tribute! But if anyone wants the “DC-9 Experience,” there are still plenty of 717s flying with Delta and Hawaiian.
@KalOrtPor4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad we still have them for the time being, but their more modern high bypass engines just aren't the same. It's not the vibrating, shaking, and in your face ear ringing experience in the back of the MD88s. That long, stepped spoolup on takeoff was glorious.

Hey, thanks for this video! I always appreciate people who take the time to video stuff like this, because we can look back and remember how things used to be. As well as all of us, I will always miss the JT8D powered airliners, the DC-9's, MD-80's, 737-200's, and of course my all time favorite, the magnificent 727's. Modern commercial airliners will NEVER be the same, as they are quieter with newer turbofans, and wing mounted engines just aren't as fierce and majestic looking as tail mounted birds. The noise of these older turbojets has everything to do with what made these birds so great, and so missed.

I was always shocked by how loud these things were in the back, but at the same time loved it because it really allowed you to hear the mechanicals working, like an old car

@jdbreaux80802 жыл бұрын
This made me realize I was a true AVGeek. Didn't expect tears to flow when I saw the last window drawn in. I also remember how quiet they were. Even seated in the last row. Now I remember it was a bit loud in the back looking into the engine, but they climbed up to cruising altitude so damn fast it never registered. Once you were that high, the only noise came from the wind passing the aircraft so fast, yet the higher you were the less wind your heard rushing by the fuselage. from there, all you could hear was the soft quieter decent, occasionally hearing the slight engine power being fine tuned for the glide slope. Even touch down was quiet. Well built. I never heard anything rattle around buttering the runway. She was always tight. A true marvel. The crew and pilots always respected her and she stood up in time showing that ubiquitous respect right up till this very flight. That was probably the most disrespect anyone has ever treated her with. Hope you live forever Mad Dog.

This plane has been the backbone of Delta's fleet for so long (since the early 1980s) it is basically nearly my whole life since I was 10 years old. It is a very long time for these planes, nearly 40 years. The youngest ones were the last to go but even those were nearly 30 years old. I guess the Airbus A220 will take its place eventually as Delta is loading up on that new Bombardier plane at this point - even eliminating a lot (but not all) of the newer 717s.
