Was this Regiment the one that absorbed the Royal Irish Rangers (colors) about 20 years ago?

*_Faugh A Ballaugh!_* - Regimental Motto of the Royal Irish Regiment. I really wished that the former Royal Ulster Rifles, and other regiments based in Northern Ireland were not disbanded. _(Please do not bash my user name and profile picture. Yes, they were enemies, but I do not associate with the Irish Republican Army and its later iterations)._

A genuine question please, What date is this, and are these fellows regular Infantry Battalions, or are they TA or Reserve units? or are they Ex UDR battalions.

It was the parade which marked the disbandment of the three Royal Irish Regiment's home service battalions, 2 Royal Irish, 3 royal Irish, and 4 Royal Irish. These were full time soldiers that primarily served in Northern Ireland as part of Op Banner, although they could also volunteer do tours in Iraq and Afghanistan by attaching to 1 Royal Irish which was the general service battalion. At the end of Op Banner there was no need for a home service so it was disbanded.

@@uberdude2555 Thank you for the explanation, they certainly are a fine body of men, note the complete delight on the Queen's face to be among her soldiers. I was also infantry and served 30 years, 3 of them as RSM 2 UDR, 1974-77. happy but frightful days, it was made far easier by the courage of the soldiers, in particular we had many ex--Ranger soldiers and the greatest boon was to have four or five ex WW2 soldiers they were, Italy and D Day vets, they were great! Never forgotten any of them.

As for the date, I believe the parade took place in October of 2006 or 2007.

There is a memorial in Island Bridge Dublin dedicated to all Irish men and women who have died in war, there are dedicated associations to the memory of disbanded Irish Regiments eg "Dublin Fusiliers " rightly so however many fought out of poverty like so many in the UK the first world war as some commentators alluded to was a war between imperial cousins many soldiers hadn't even the right to vote AN Wilsons description of Victorian Britain and the early 20th is an education. ROI has moved on population of 5 Millon proud member of a progressive EU looking to the future itself a institution that came after the 2nd World War which again many men/women from the Republic fought against fascism again rightly so the great difference between commerations followed by Irish citizens is respect for all lost relatives not the triumphalism shown by many loyalists not all and the political overtones by marching bands Orange/loyalists some who wouldn't even remember the Vietnam War but call it their culture how arrogant, young people today have a right to join any army they wish for a career just that but ROI and Europe have moved on to a different future not an imperial past even Nato has to work within the political framework of the EU especially in the current conflict!

I am British but served in both British and NI infantry Units, The Irish that I served with were good and proud soldiers. During the first WW where 6 or more of your Southern infantry Regiments did the army right and proud to help defeat Germany. Second war likewise as members of the British army. I have great respect for Irish fighting qualities, also the Welsh and Scottish. I fought in four wars and my thoughts are that you should be careful with your written thoughts. some not correct! . Irish Soldiers are well respected in the British army and have been since Waterloo, My own little town lost nearly 500 soldiers in WW1 mostly at 2nd Ypres in May 1915. We gather each November to commemorate them and rightly so. The Southern Irish should do likewise in the South. Had the Kaiser or Adolf landed his troops in Dublin they would not have been kind at all, ROI were neutral, thankfully many thousands of your soldiers were not and joined the fight! Finally our Regimental Sergeant Major in 1970 (British Battalion) Hailed from Cork, and what an excellent and disciplined man he was!

@@overopensights I was making general points the 2nd war many Irish fought against fascism as some of my family at Monte Casino in Italy and the commeration recently at Island bridge Dublin commerates all Irish men/women, peace keeper's who have died respectfully in ROI as an independent state in the EU many Irishmen fought in the Spanish Civil War where according to Bevers "Spanish Civil War " British Navy allowed Germany to bring arms, Planes etc to practice Blitzkrieg whilst stopping arms to the Basques Churchill had to sort/root out many Nazi sympathisers in British society including the Navy Higher ranks so yes the REPUBLIC was "officially neutral " the country had been through a war of independence, a civil war which many would argue led to the troubles in the 6 counties commeration is not in the brief of any one country but to constantly dwell in the past is an insulting to many generations of Germans who want a peaceful united prosperous future within the EU, UK made its decision it has to be respected but not by harping back to an imperial past as some in the Tory would like using past wars with Political overtones!

@@sandrabrowne2350 I presume you are an ex University student in modern history, also a socialist. Fine if you are, but many comments on hear are from people who have felt and seen the noise of battle, wherever it was. For the EU, it is an unelected community that dictate policy, you seem to lap it up? The corruption is shown in many ways, one blatant aspect is the ROI having a Corporation tax of 12% while UK and others are in excess of 20 or 22% no wonder you like them, while UK played it right and fought by the rules, ROI do not! just one reason to make people annoyed, Meanwhile all high powered UK supermarkets and many big business have their Head Offices in the ROI and employ your folk, the latter part I can live with. The not abiding by the rules I cannot! nor can many others over here.

@@chinstrapx The Loyalists never call themselves Irish when they get back home in NI because their forefathers came from Scotland or England and they don't want to be confused with the Nationalists, they only get referred to as Irish when they are in an Irish regiment in the UK. There are a few from the Republic that join but they are a real minority. If you substituted the word Planters for Irish you would get a more honest picture of the composition of any Irish Regiment in the UK
