The Sknyliv Air Show Disaster - what happened here on 27th July 2002 was a catastrophe that almost beggars belief. A Soviet era SU-27 twin engine jet came out of an acrobatic maneuver too low, lost control and ploughed into the watching crowds.... It is the worst air show disaster on record, a tragedy that should never have happened.

As a crew chief in the air force we were shown uncensored video and pictures of this and many other incidents. I've never forgotten those images. As for why they were shown. It was to quote "show you what happens when you allow negligence in your work"

I was a F117 crew chief at holloman afb nm. I launched the one that was shot down during the Bosnian conflict, I stood on the apron waiting for the plane to come back the whole time, hoping I didn't cause a pilot's death. I watched a video of this disaster; and while I have a strong stomach, it's one of the few videos I've ever regretted watching. The cameraman was running through the carnage seconds after the aircraft came to a stop. Among the screams of people in agony and those of a mother sobbing while cradling her (likely dead) child, there were body parts strewn about randomly. Arms, legs, what may/may not have been a head, it was hell on Earth. I watched it once and only once (and it's been close to 10 years now); and the images are ingrained in my brain, probably for life. God bless those people who lived through this, and God rest the souls of those who didn't.

This is why these types of things are censored on YT and the mainstream news media, be it from war, crime, terrorism, strife or simply an accident. It is very, very difficult for most people to see and hear and feel the true reality, and it rightly affects most people very emotionally, and I have a strong stomach too. Life can be tragic and sad in the extreme in this world.

@MelHayler

Floated down? Any pilot ejecting close to the ground know they have a slim chance of survival! The pilots in this accident were very, very lucky to survive their ejection after their aircraft touched the ground! The ejector seats only shoot them a short distance from the aircraft, fine if your a few thousand feet up in the air, not so fine when close to the ground. Look again at the pictures, parachutes are not to be seen, that's how quick it all happened! There was no chance of floating down at all!

At an air show where you can't find the crowd, I would think the prudent thing to do is to level off until you've located the crowd and your bearings then continue with the exhibit. The worst thing to do is what they did which was to fly into the crowd.

We live at the top of a hill at the end of a 15 mile long valley in North West France. The house is prominent and the French air force use the house as a marker (and, we have been told, a target). Jets fly over at around 200 ft/65 metres, then turn and climb, often using afterburners. My wife hates it (the dogs are okay), and for me it is my own, almost daily, airshow. When replacing the roof I was occasionally acknowledged by pilots. Fun times.

Extreme example of the consequences of unprofessional piloting. It's the PIC's (Pilot In Command) responsibility. The many other factors in the Swiss Cheese model were in place no doubt but the PIC failed in his part. His multiple slices of Swiss cheese allowed the crash and it was his decisions that caused what ought be prevented. Since he was in command of the aircraft then he got what was coming to him because he failed and failed badly in his duty. It's sounds harsh of me but the point is out of a pack of 20 cheese slices he had 10 he did nothing about. The courts recognized this and made it so he could not so much as ever drive a stick up a dog's ass again. However, the courts/regulatory authorities etc recognized he didn't mean it and there were genuine mitigating factors and he wasn't sentenced to life imprisonment either. What makes it worse is his pathetic pleas of innocence. Again, I understand he didn't mean to do it, I understand the jet mightn't have been performing as it should and that he lost situational awareness. If he lost situational awareness then all he had to do was do a fly over and see where the crowd actually was and this would never have happened. He might not've performed maneuvers for which he wasn't qualified. He might not've flown so low. He might not've pulled so many Gs so close to the ground. Almost all crashes are because humans failed to do what they are supposed to do. Yep he didn't mean to do it but he allowed it to happen through gross negligence. May he stew in his regret. I doubt too many survivors would disagree with me. I still feel sorry for him but less so knowing he tries to proclaim innocence. Pol Pot was like that in the end too.

@@ThePaulv12. The fact he feels terribly about it shows he has a conscience. For that, I feel badly for him, I really do, and I hope he can come to terms with that someday. Perhaps he is doing something in this current conflict with Russia that will redeem himself, at least in his own eyes. However; The fact he is still vocally committed to claiming it wasn’t his fault, shows that he has not properly done the mental work to face the reality that he was ultimately responsible, through his own negligence or reluctance to “call it off” when things started to go awry. He needs to own his part in the disaster (And it was a big part) and learn to accept it, and move forward in his life. I pity him for not finding this mental clarity. I hope he can find it in the future.

I personally can’t see the pilot being solely responsible for this crash. Of course, some responsibility has to be attributed to the pilots. I witnessed a crash at the CNE Airshow when a two RCAF Snowbirds collided and one dove vertically straight into Lake Ontario killing the pilot. The other pilot managed to eject and survived. Fortunately, although many were in shock, no spectators were involved. A tragic end for one young pilot but accidents do happen and regardless of the skill, experience, and dedication to excellence of pilots mistakes can still be made. I am sure it will always weigh heavily on the mind of the surviving pilot to his dying day.

I have the same opinion as you. I think that in this case the pilots were condemned as a way of conforming to the parents of the dead. I have also been to several air shows and unfortunately, despite training, anything can happen, in this situation absolute control is an illusion. Even my country's demonstration squadron has already lost 3 pilots in public presentations, in all accidents only the pilots died, which means that when only the pilot dies, everything is fine.

Thank you so much for this. Your commentary is so factual, empathetic and sympathetic. Your brief summary is I'm sure the result of many hours of detailed research. It seems the crew were unfairly blamed for this tragedy. Instead the bureaucratic organisers get away with incompetence and not listening to the crew. So sad for so many reasons.
@GeeBee909
@GeeBee909 7 ай бұрын
Sorry but the crew were not "unfairly blamed". Why? because THEY were flying the plane. They clearly said they were attempting manuvers in which they had no previous experience and failing to follow orders. How then, can they be "unfairly blamed"???? If they had an incorrect map as stated, the PILOT should have known this DAYS BEFORE flying the air show. Further, he could NOT have been looking at a map while flying the show. When the U.S. Navy Blue Angels fly an air show. They arrive days BEFORE and practice ALL manuvers FIRST to check out, for example location of any mountains, telephone lines etc...."Bureaucratic organisers" were not flying the plane, HE WAS. Thus, it was HIS responsibility to insure a safe flight because HE was in control. If HE felt it was unsafe HE, as pilot in command, should have refused to fly the air show because HE felt it was unsafe.
@mikeconey2164
@mikeconey2164 7 ай бұрын
I suspect you are assuming that pilots in Ex Soviet East European countries have as much autonomy as US pilots - I seriously doubt that was the case. They were also refused extra practice - not a good sign. Have you neglected the claims of reduced aircraft performance, which seem to tie in with the film. The left engine was also dialled down, the left side of the plane also appeared to have the bigger problem.@@GeeBee909

It doesn't matter where the crowd was in relation to the display aircraft, he crashed. The fact that he crashed into the crowd rather than a "safe space" is his responsibility. @EclecticDiscus
@EclecticDiscus 4 ай бұрын
As a pilot for 48 yrs, flown 50 or more exotic aircraft, it amazes me a person gets to this level of aircraft and gets in this situation at 4:04 where you see the pilot commit a roll OBVIOUSLY without checking the ground or altitude until to late when he was in to 1/4 of the roll. He never should have tried the roll, once he did, he was doomed. He realizes he is to low at 4:09 and starts to pull up but he was already doomed. Nothing he could do to prevent it at this point. He goes into a High Speed wing stall because he WAS PULLING UP way to much, without enough altitude for the plane to complete the loop at the bottom and the plane pancakes into ground after dragging the left wing. I can't tell you how many pilot deaths are caused by high speed wing stalls at air shows, but it's a lot. Not enough altitude for the maneuver ... and because the pilot realized it on the way to the ground, he pulled up as much as he could, the problem is the wing stalls, there is no lift even though he is going fast BECAUSE The WING is to flat of an angle to the direction he is moving. Not creating Lift or allowing him to maneuver. IF he had more altitude, he could have completed the maneuver, eventually even thou he stalled the wing. His only chance was to see he was to low at 4:04 and either fly inverted maintaining his current altitude or make a left turn never starting the roll! You can see the high speed wing stall at 6:03 where it looks like the planes bottom is being sucked to the ground, the plane is not flying but falling.. The pilot is along for the ride at this point helpless because of his earlier error. This accident had nothing to do with being over spectators. He was hitting the ground at 4:09 no matter what was under him at that altitude . Nothing shows any type of mechanical problem and if he had an issue with power, he should have stopped the performance. He is experienced, He knows this. This looks to be pilot error. Over confident PILOT ERROR. Most certainly "pilot in command" error, for flying to close to the crowd! The pilots BS after the accident is all cover up.

A full before-during-after video was on KZbin years ago before getting too much attention and removed. The narrator here is not exaggerating -- it was traumatizing. Among bits of plane and trash (paper, clothes, packaging, wrappers, tents, etc.) where chunks of bodies, some of the larger ones "moving" in disturbing ways. Not coated in blood like in movies, but pale and looking more like slabs of meat hanging in a butcher shop cooler. Half a torso and a leg there, a head and neck there, lumps of mangled flesh in tattered clothing over there. Carnage was everywhere, no need to seek it out, it found your eye in every frame. And people stumbling through it in shock. A couple of nervously laughing teens walking by, an elderly man standing and turning as he looks for something on the ground. Smoke everywhere. And then, the low moans and high screams started. A woman runs by holding what's left of her baby (maybe half). Yeah, it was not something you forget seeing.

I think too that he has a point that the fault was on the organizers too, there shouldn't be growds of people under the flying area, seems he didn't know about this. Though he must have made some mistake by flying so low but there never should have been people where they fly. Unless he himself totally missed the flying area and flew against where the audience where even when he should not have.

I'm no pilot, but to me it very much looked like the plane should've been able to recover at certain points. It appears to be a lack of thrust at a critical point brought the plane down rather than pilot error.

The pilot ultimately is responsible. He decided to fly over the crowd, he decided to keep flying even though he admitted the engine was problematic. He made the call that the show must go on, he is at fault.

@@davidgenie-ci5zl Exactly, It doesn't matter what aircontrol says he was in command of that jet in much the same way none of us could blame our bosses because we crashed a car. Yes the boss may have set a dangerous route and maybe even gotten permission to make it so but we as the driver are ultimately responsible for that vehicles actions.
