Finale Act 1 Part 1

Gilbert and Sullivan's raucous operatic tale is captured in all its fun and glory in this production, recorded live at Central Park's Delacorte Theater. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling and libidinous Pirate King while Linda Ronstadt makes her theatrical debut as the lovely and virginal Mabel. When Mabel and Frederic, a young pirate bound to serve the Pirate King, fall in love, complications arise and high spirited antics ensue. The incomparable cast offers the best in this boisterous romp.
Despite some of the technical shortcomings of the DVD I found it more rewarding than the 1983 movie. I would thoroughly recommend adding a copy of this DVD to your library.

Kevin Kline, the quadruple thread-- acting, dance, song, comedy. Fantastic. He won a Tony award for best actor for this summer production in Central Park, and deservedly so.

I love Gilbert and Sullivan dearly. But I'm afraid I had a rather snobbish attitude toward non-D'oyly Carte Company performances. believing that William Gilbert would have had these performers arrested on the spot if he could for crimes against his script and much else besides. But what a discovery! If only I could have been there! In my ignorance I'm ashamed to admit that I had initially regarded Linda Ronstadt as just another pop singer. How wrong I was! I'm sure Gilbert and Sullivan would have loved her. She has, among other talents, a fine operatic voice. And Kevin Kline? I remember him for fine performances in "A Fish Called Wanda" with John Cleese and "Wild,Wild West" with Will Smith and Kenneth Brannagh, but here he is, an athletic dancer with a great voice and commanding presence. Not to mention the tragic Tony Azito as the police sergeant. A glorious production which I believe transferred to Broadway. Apologies all round!

I love G & S, but think that because they always having a tongue in cheek prod at the establishment, both G & S, would laugh at this rendition. Sometimes the "purists" can't appreciate the humour that is intended. Have seen some of the productions from earlier times and they are, to be truthful, rather flat and soulless, I.e, very little acting and just mouthing the words to music rather than singing them with conviction
