I love it when super bosses have a explanation for their existence in the story of the game. Sure it's fine to just have a super boss that basically only exists in gameplay to be one last challenge but giving the superboss some cool lore can add a lot of flavor.

thats why I think one of the great super-bosses from a lore perspective in the series is specifically, Deumion from FF2(anniversary edition). especially with the lore behind the Destroy spell and the tragicness of how he became an eternal guardian, protecting that spell for eternity til Firion and party shows up. it, next to soul of rebirth's Emperor of Heaven, really cements FF2 as a very nice lore-rich game in a good amount of aspects despite the low amount of dialogue. Deumion's ""that is most unfortunate.." as he closes his eyes before he battles you, is something that always stuck with me. he is deff the easiest superboss in the entire series, but the lore surrounding him and his summon, Phrekyos, is very neat.

If FF9 remake happens I really hope we learn more about Ozma, I remember people would speculate about how it's an eidolon that's so powerful it's unable to sustain a physical form in the human world and that's so fierce. I want this to be elaborated on.
@GuyDude-hk8uy10 ай бұрын
I can't remember if this was in-game or fanon, but I distinctly remember it being an eidolon from Terra rather than Gaia, like the Ark. However, as eidolons are formed from belief/memory/wishes (like real Gods, in a sense), whatever Ozma was had somehow been almost completely forgotten from the collective unconsciousness; all that remains is a swirling ball of colour, presumably brief glimpses of the few parts of it that somehow remain, jumbled and vague.

About that the PS4 remasters infinite HP cheat for FF9 is useless you can still DIE if you have 9999 HP at lv 99 and Ozma's Meteor spell at random CAN hit for 9999 damage while Doomgaze the FF6 boss is a required battle in FF9 at lv 75 with like 3000 to 4000 HP even ITS Meteor can still 1 shot a lv 75 party with that much HP. But its still NOT a SUPER boss in FF6 that belongs to the Magic Master Tower boss without at least 8000 HP on all his Ultima upon death can do at least that much when he dies at 50,000 MP if you can't use Auto Life/Life 3 phoenix esper spell then you have no option BUT to drop his MP to 79 or less since Ultima still costs 80 MP when that boss dies. But in the GBA version at least 2 Dragons den bosses use Ultima when they die the first being the Red dragon their but the Red dragon can't be killed until it dies from old age so even MP draining spells will fail to kill it and draining like 65,000 MP the Kaiser dragon has 3 times so that it dies and can't use Ultima upon its 3rd forms death isn't worth it either.

Good video, although I noticed a couple inaccuracies: 13:57 As shown in later footage, Deathgaze did not originally appear on the map in the SNES and GBA versions and was invisible; that dark void thing was added later. 29:05 The way Ozma's extra turns work is that, if Ozma is not currently performing an action animation, and the player gives ANY command to any character, Ozma will immediately get an extra turn before the character can execute their command. Thus, you can bypass this mechanic by waiting for Ozma to act first, then inputting commands before it finishes. Although I didn't fight Ultima Weapon/Omega Weapon in FF8 myself, judging by other comments it appears that their level scaling was also only added in later releases, whereas they were always level 100 in the original.

Ozma being an Eidolon from Terra would make sense, it normally is able to absorb the Shadow element to heal itself, which it could hit everything with using Doomsday and was also the element used by Ark. And if you want to stretch, even though it came later, FFXIV suggests that Ozma was something created by the mages of Mhach, so the same could also be true of FFIX's Ozma being created on Terra, likely as an initial attempt to attack Gaia only for the Summoners of Gaia to seal it away as the best they could do. The fact Ozma rewards you with a full Pumice, which was the item to teach garnet Ark as a Summon, makes the suggestion of Ozma's connection to Terra all the more apparent. That's just how I feel regarding Ozma thanks to its appearance in FFXIV.

I remember in FFIV 2 Mad Ogres awaited you in a box in Damcyan (I think). They were kind of sort of like superbosses in the sense that they would usually attack first and about 3 times each. Resulting in One hit KOs if you’re not prepared.
@daviddalrymple228410 ай бұрын
Eblan Castle had three Monster chests which you could reach as soon as you got the airship, and they would absolutely wreck you at that point in the game. And the rewards weren't even that great. The Drain spear is only really useful as a thrown weapon for Edge. And the Slumber Sword for Cecil is quickly outclassed by the Flame sword you can find in the Tower of Zot.
@veghesther320410 ай бұрын
About that theirs a few of those time stopping hour glass items I owned enough to make sure those Elban enemies are stopped at the start since even my LV 40 Paladin Cecil and LV 45 Yang would NOT survive a single turn without slop in effect. Drain spear is useful IE killing the Pink Puffs FOR the almost NEVER dropped Pink Tails since HP drain weapons tend to hit those for like 4000+ HP so that Kain and Cecil against those would never die against them.

I feel that you left out two of the original FFVI superbosses: the World of Balance's Intangir/Sleeping Lion and the World of Ruin's Brachiosaur/Brachioraidos. Both of these enemies are super bosses akin to War Mech and Testukyujin. Only found as a random encounter on the unnamed "Triangle" island in the world of Balance, Intangir, at 32,000 HP, has more HP than Atma Weapon/Ultima Weapon the "final boss" of the World of Balance. This massive beast absorbs most elements, comes pre-buffed with Float, Haste, Shell, and Protect and is immune to almost every negative status effect. Initially encountered in it's "sleeping" Invisible state, once awoken it would counter with the more powerful enemy version of Meteor before going back to sleep unless it woke up at less than 1280 Hp in which it would flee. When killed it would cast Meteor as a final attack on it's killer. The only real reward for killing it is 10 AP while the rare Magicite Shard can be stolen from it. Only found as a 1/16 random encounter in the unnamed "Dinosaur Forest," Brachiosaur can be a massive and deadly surprise to anyone level grinding on the Tyranosaurs there. This beast is a higher level than any boss in Kefka's tower with an HP total of 46,050 that rivals that of any other boss. It makes use of powerful abilities Disaster (Inflict a bunch of negative effects on the party), Meteor, Snort (remove one party member from the battlefield) and even Ultima. Once you manage to kill it it will counter with Ultima as it's final attack. 10 AP and Celestraids/Economizers are the reward for killing it and Ribbions can be stolen from it.

Thank you for the comment! The main reason is that the previous video was one of the first Evolutionary topics we ever did. It therefore only focussed on the mainline games and was quite narrow in scope with regards to the actual evolutions, merely pointing out when Superbosses matched--up with pre-established traits, as opposed to doing any kind of investigation. We wanted to redo the concept based on how we do Evolutions now and the aim is to be as all encompassing as it makes sense to be. This first part, which only covers Final Fantasy I -> IX, is already longer and more detailed than the entire previous video and it's hopefully representative of our wider vision and what's to come! ~Darryl

I can confirm its absolutely possible to kill the emperor with Destroy(did it myself) but he needs to not use a magic attack for that to work. from what I recall it takes somewhere around.. 5 or so casts of Destroy to kill the Emperor of Hell. its weirdly fun to do too-

I hope you'll include Hard mod Bhunivelze+ in your evolution videos. It's by far the hardest Boss of Lightning Returns.

Holy shit. No idea Japan missed out on such iconic content like VII’s weapons.

Funny to me when people were talking about _Final Fantasy XVI_ "going back to traditional fantasy” when the first game had an airship, a friendly robot NPC with dialogue, a chicken-walker warmech with a "nuclear" attack…

Honestly I never really counted 8 as having a super boss since none of them were difficult, now Ozma gives me nightmares to this day
@aiox8210 ай бұрын
For Deathgaze, you can increase the encounter rate by lowering the number of party members. A party of one character will find Deathgaze much faster than a full party of four.

Ozma being such an ancient & mythical entity within FF9 that the First duke of Lindblum regularly flooded his city with monsters just to select people who would accompany him to try and kill it (in vain)

Favourite one of mine is Emerald Weapon. Unlike Ruby Weapon and many others in the others titles I've played, there was actually a decent reward for beating him. Ruby Weapon was like "yay, a gold chocobo", I got one earlier to get KOTR in order to beat you, I don't really need another.
@Cloud97110 ай бұрын
Plus it's not really competitive for the Chocobo Races... Maybe it's for people who doesn't use KOTR?
@callmeshaggy516610 ай бұрын
@@Cloud971 exactly this. It would've been worth it had it not been given the worst stats possible for a gold chocobo, but breeding one, especially from chocobos that have been fed right & raced to S, could be 20% better right out of the egg.
@The_PolterGhost10 ай бұрын
I beat Ruby without KotR because breeding a gold chocobo would have taken longer than I would have cared to spend. So, it was a legitimate reward, just one that I wouldn't really need.

Ozma was one of the best because of his written code. Devs were screwing with us and I’m sure they loved it

I appreciate the evolution videos a lot, especially the ones about bosses. One thing though, fighting games are widely considered to be limited to games like Street Fighter, Tekken (we even had Noctis in Tekken 7), Mortal Kombat, and Smash Bros (Cloud and Sephiroth in SSBU btw). Games that are designed for 1v1 multiplayer gameplay that share a number of core mechanics and concepts (spacing, frame advantage, pressure, combo's, mix-ups, neutral etc.). Games like Streets of Rage that might look a bit like Street Fighter but only feature CPU combat and lack the interactivity of those other games, these are known as beat-em ups. And punch out is just it's own thing really, nothing really plays like it. To many people it will sound off to mention punch out as a fighting game so I figured I'd mention it

I recall deathgaze from ff6 not having an indication of where it is. Is it perhaps the version I was playing was ff3 on the SNES?
@Danahell10 ай бұрын
Are you going to talk about the super bosses added to newer editions of the first Final Fantasies?
@FinalFantasyUnion10 ай бұрын
Hey Danahell, thanks for the comment! We absolutely are planning to, some of them will be included in Part II when we talk about the Dawn of Souls, but others will likely be further down the line. ~Darryl

My favorite Final fantasy boss's "ShinrRyu" and "Omega"! 😍♥️♥️
@gjtrue9 ай бұрын
Emerald Weapon and Ruby Weapon gives me all kinds of PTSD. Certainly Emerald as it feels more like a "beginners trap." Ruby I feel is the most difficult of the two beasts due to it's high DEF and odd patterns needed to defeat it. Same memories for Ultimate Weapon and the stronger Omega weapon in Final Fantasy VIII. Though Ultimate I didn't have too much issue with as a kid (aside from that dang Light Pillar attack...), Omega I had the most trouble with due to not realizing he had a specific repeating pattern I had to read up on.

I never thought Deathgaze as the FF6 superboss. It was definitely the Magic Master! Far more difficult and had a ton of things you had to do to get up to it!
@daviddalrymple228410 ай бұрын
I think that Deathgaze earns its place on the list because of the unusual nature of its encounters moreso than the challenge of its battle.

Funny... I didn't realise Knights of the Round had a counter on Emerald Weapon. The first time I saw him go down I was like 8 and my friend's older brother killed him by using Knights of the Round once and it cast like 6 times in a row. I remember being stunned at 3 things.:The secret boss, the secret materia (you have to go out of your way to get Knights of the Round), and that I had no idea how he summoned Knights of the Round so many times in one turn.

I played the nes ff1, I got it as a Christmas gift. So I had all the manuals. I was headed across the bridge, I ran into war mech. I died. I grinded so much thinking it was a mandatory encounter. Imagine my surprise when I crossed the bridge and it didn't pop up. I will say, it took me like 5 years to beat ff1 from the first time I played that game. Just cause I was a stupid little kid

Oh, I beat Shinmryuu [sp?] back in the day. Never knew it was a secret boss. More Mymic came to mind. But it's actually not a mimic. Haha.

No super boss can compare to Ragu Regula from the Wild Arms series. In particularly, Wild Arms 3, where he lurked at the bottom of a 100 floor dungeon full of enemies who could warp you back to the start.

I always cheesed Omega weapon by doing that attk that first removes all defense and then use the Zell limit and then use the basice "up down" or "left right" really quick, allowing me to hit over 10 times per limit, always doing 9999 damage

Ozma may not be capable of taking much punishment in theory, but it also can oneshot an entire fully levelled up party with meteor and frequently uses Curaga on itself as a counterattack to effectively increase the punishment it can take past the initial 55535, since meteor will always be part of its moveset, but other techniques may be entirely phased out of it if you completely negate them with immunities, this means preparing too much essentially increases the chance for meteor, as the less attacks it has, the higher the chance for the attack to be picked ending up being meteor. To me, it always felt like one of the most brutally random bosses in the games due to this, if you're lucky, he's a pushover and dies with little effort, if you're unlucky he kills you shortly after the fight begins with the casting of a single spell, and worst of all, he has an additional Pumice Piece, as well as Dark Matter to steal pretty much solely to taunt completionists, as both items are limited in the game, the Dark Matter especially so. Then, when you actually beat Ozma, the Dark Matter from the drop isn't guaranteed either, painful.
