Welcome back Elliot, and I've ordered an Atto 3 in Australia. Finally a practical affordable EV. I live in a small rural Tasmanian town without charging infrastructure but with crazy rising fuel costs we've installed an 11kw charger on our 12kw solar array... For me a simple, cheaper EV with around 400km range it's a no brainer. Looking forward to delivery next month!

2:23 - Robert rightfully rants..... He's right. Australian government policy has been openly hostile to EVs (and to green energy). But since May, we have had a new government run by adults. Green energy policies are changing rapidly, and better EV policies are on the way. I'm hoping this means that companies will start selling their EVs here. There are several cars - NIOs, several of the VAG cars, Fords, Xpengs and others - that are simply not available here, and that I would buy if they were available. It's not like there isn't the appetite for EVs here: each allocation of Ioniq 5s and EV6s sells out instantly, and waiting lists for other EVs are huge. I'm hoping that the manufacturers will react reasonably quickly to our change in government and speed up the launch of their cars here. But I'm not optimistic: I think we might have pushed ourselves right to the back of the queue over the past few years, and we may be stuck there.

@@gazgandalf4854 EVs - which I posted about - and China - which you posted about in your response to my post about EVs - are two different things. After all, everyone likes safe and reliable batteries and EV with reasonable and cheap prices. The good news is that BYD is greatly expanding its production capacity.
@DavidKnowles0
@DavidKnowles0 2 жыл бұрын
It a balancing act if BYD wait to long they may well missed their opportunity to make a impact into those foreign markets, as traditional western manufacturers catch up. However if they move to fast they could suffer reputational damage for not being able to deliver customer orders and possibly from high recall rates. MG seem to have made a good go off it through, nearly doubling their UK market share in the last couple of years and that almost completely down to its electric vehicles offerings. This is also why Elon Musk was a bit of a idiot cancelling Tesla sub 25k car. Even if they can't produce many of them or at a profit, it better to establish a foothold into that market segment rather let for example let MG who releasing a 28k hatchback this year gain a foothold and may be even dominate it, if not other competition comes along quick enough. Which is why GM is threatening a price war, they know ultimately they need to prevent new comers from establishing market share because once they do, it very hard for others to take it away. See how Ford F150 dominates truck sales in the US.

I´ve been following the evolution of BYD for a while and now even more so, since the company has put Brazil on their map. Started with electric buses and are already selling their cars, with plans for a local factory. Here´s a company that´s not afraid. Nicely crafted details on this one. I, for one, think that some electric vehicle makers try too hard and forget that theses things must be practical, first and foremost. So, well designed and made and still affordable are very desirable features too.

Love fully charged, and normally Elliot is great, but i think he slightly misses the pulse on this one. The Atto 3 as exported to right hand drive market is pretty much a fully loaded cars, and not a 'no-frills. It has more equipment than the Yuan Plus car Elliot tested, such as it does have electric tailgate, power heated seats, dirac sound, all the latest safety and driver aids, and the surround cameras even include showing what is under the car. The no-frills part could be that it is neither a supercar (7.3 0-100km/h) all wheel drive or a huge load hauler, and it only add kms when charging at the speed of an iX40 but range is good.

Very glad it's coming to Australia. I actually like the interior, but I dare say most of us would prefer something with a more basic interior with more conventional components to bring the price down further. There's plenty of interest here for new electric cars, but most of us just can't afford them. Things will start shifting when we can buy EVs in the 30-something or 20-something K price range, and many of us would be happy to put up with a simpler wash-down interior to get it. I wonder if licensing their vehicles through an established marque might be a better strategy, though MG seem to be doing quite well down here with their cheap little ICE hatchbacks.

Great review. As an Aussie driving a 2010 Camry Hybrid, I am itching to get into my first EV. The problem has simply been cost of something decent. Aussies are actually usually early adopters of technology and for all the talk about how we are killing the planet, we are closing coal mines (while China and India keep opening new ones) and have the highest private rooftop solar uptake (per capita) of any nation. $52k for a 3 year old Ioniq with 250km useable range?? or $25k-35k for a Nissan that will go 100-150km unless it gets hot - piss off. Give us a decent car with a decent range (300-400km), DC quick charge for when we travel and a battery that still works on a 45 degree day. My Dolphin (Atto3 is still outside my budget) will get a light coloured wrap over the glass roof, as they are terrible on a hot summer day.

@@user-ku6bv4ni2f I doubt it. The dynasty series cars would have PHEV and EV and ICE versions of the same model (for instance the Han came in both PHEV and BEV versions). But now BYD no longer make ICE cars, and seems to have split their new cars into two ocean series, the ocean animals (BEV only) and warships (PHEV only). These ocean series are getting new models, but none of the dynasty series got new models except the Yuan Plus. The PHEV Destroyer is just a rebadged Qin, which means Qin is probably not getting replaced. The new Seal sedan is similar in size and price to the Han, and the upcoming Sea Lion EV is similar to the Song, so probably Han and Song won't be coming back either.

Great review! There is a huge market for this car in Europe also, where the majority just want a A to B transportation device for their daily 50-100 km, so it is all about simplicity and PRICE. Here the price seems great but the ranges are 100-150 km too short. They have to improve the efficiency alot. Only 320 km with a 50 kWh is not good enough for a relatively small car. With 50 kWh battery they should do at least 400 km WLTP. However it is great with the blade battery and Vehicles To Grid option. I will take this one over the VW ID3.

I had a good look at the LHD display models of the Atto 3 and Dolphin at BYD's showroom in Sydney. To me, the interior of the Dolphin actually felt plusher than that of the Atto 3. I thought the Atto 3 was fine, though, and it will appeal to a lot of people Personally, the one thing I didn't like was the front air vents. They felt cheap and fragile. Everything else felt solid, and the ergonomics were great: I really liked the mix of buttons and screen, which should be very intuitive to use. And for a smallish car there was a lot of room inside. The MG ZS EV, the most obvious competitor, has done well here, and I think the Atto 3 will do even better. The only challenge BYD faces here is that the importer, EV Direct, seems to keep messing things up. It's been promising and delaying, promising and delaying for well over a year, and while this appears to be an EV Direct problem rather than a BYD problem, I think it risks damaging the credibility of the BYD brand in Australia.

I live in NSW and what you said about our federal government in relation electric vehicles, renewables etc is quite right. The NSW government which is the same colour as the federal government is quite the opposite in relation to electric vehicles etc. Recently we had a federal election and the libs were kicked out now we have a Labor government which is much more in tune with the rest of the world so things are looking good. I've never written anything before but at the risk of giving you a big head I always watch your videos but unfortunately rarely watch the pommy ones anymore. Looking forward to more regular reviews in the future. I'm 75 and I ordered a Tesla model 3 after a test drive in Sydney then when the model Y was released in Australia I cancelled the 3 and ordered a Y on the first day next week I'll have a test drive. Being so old the Y would be much more practical for me. All the best for the future.

You didnt mention price but I assume it will be a lot cheaper than a Tesla! This is what most people are waiting for, they deperately want an EV, especially with the current gas prices, but not at 40-50k Anothet great video 👏

BYD selling more affordable cars is great, but even just a small froot/frunk where you can store a wet/dirty cable would seem a logical thing for any manufacturer, or will this be another car where the after market suppliers have to step in?

i’ve had a frunk in both of my Teslas and literally never used it in five years. If you charge at home as most people will do 99% of the time, all the cables stay at home. If you charge a charging station, they supply the cable. The only times you might need a cable would be if you’re staying at a friends house and you want to plug-in to a wall outlet to plug up before you drive away. A rare circumstance.

@@colingenge9999 for those of us with drives, fine, for those who will be using street chargers (as many will in future) then a cable will be needed, manufacturers need to look forward.

@@fredbloggs72 I have used electric vehicle chargers on the street in three countries and never needed a cable. I can’t imagine how you would even use a cable. Sometimes you might need an adapter about as big as your fist but that’ll fit in the glove box.

Everyone in Australia is hanging out for their Atto 3's to be delivered. We where told July deliveries but because of covid-19 lockdowns in Shanghai and acquiring enough ships and vehicle spaces to Australia this has pushed out our deliveries by 6 to 8 weeks. Poor communication for the importer, evdirect has not helped the matter. So hopefully now our Atto 3s will start and arrive towards the end of August and into September. In Australia alone over 3,000 have been ordered.
