If you can't hit a target the size of basket ball. IE center mass, than you have a whole nother issue that might require an optometrist. That or your gun is not the right size fir your arm strength. Get a smaller gun. I had to down grade from a 40cal to a 9mm do to my arms not being able to hold back the recoil from the 40cal anymore, after dropping a transmission on my right arm.

Dustin Silva Unlike what Mr. Rob Pridemore said I believe that whether you have more or fewer rounds an untrained or unpracticed shooter could still miss if using a caliber that is more for them to handle. This is why I stick with 9mm for my semi auto pistols because yes I can shoot 10mm at the range but in a stressful situation I wouldn’t rely on it. At the end the day I’m confident with 9mm in a semi auto and 38 special plus p in my 357 snub nose.

He could calculate the statistical hit probability based on barrel length, weight, trigger pull and sights to further normalize the value. I'm not sure what he used to calculate the 9mm base value, but peak impulse and penetration would be my suggested starting point. It was funny though.

Really amusing correlation of calibers. He had me going for a bit there. I have a number of weapons, each loaded with a load specific for its intended use. And yes, the 45 magnum is loaded for bear, we have black bears around here. The 45 ACP is loaded with Gold Talons, as is a Airweight 38 special snubbie. My Ruger 380 is loaded with R.I.P. Ammo, it being for extremely close in self defense. I have a S&W 40 Cal M&P LE trade in coming and will fill in the gap nicely. Oh, did I not mention the Glock 19 loaded with Critical Defense hollow points?

Flawed argument. If you want to compare shot placement, then compare shot placement. We're comparing calibers. If a person is shot in the heart with a 22lr or 44 mag, which will cause faster blood loss...that is the real comparison. Shot placement is not relevant when comparing calibers.

Okay, very good place to start but not good enough to be a deciding chart. The power and energy of the round compared to a 9mm is a very good way to compare rounds (it would be a great thing if you could explain how you got to those values of the chart). But to select a firearm and a cartridge is more than that. Power into the target is the first. Ammo capacity is the second Being able to shoot it accurately is the third And being able to carry the firearm is also important. So those things should be taken into account in this case. 1) How much energy and damage can you deliver into the target with a certain cartridge and barrel length configuration (stopping power) 2) what percentage of rounds can you accurately deliver into the intended area of your target 3) how many attackers can you face with the given ammo capacity of your gun effectively disabling each one of them 4)how well can you conceal your gun and how comfortably can you carry it? That is the ultimate way to choose a gun and cartridge for yourself
