@@Fab1Man The solar panels is believe it or not, not the main selling point that they have, it was just an extra thing that made sense given how efficient the vehicle is, and with this they are making the solar panels more efficient for the shape they need to be. And you're being dishonest by saying it's not groundbreaking or significant; for people living in sunny areas they might never need to charge it, that's how efficient it is, and where is another example of a car that is powered by the sun? Of course it's groundbreaking; the whole care is. _"Too little and especially way too late."_ That's a very defeatist attitude. _"I never see this becoming mainstream in any way."_ I remember people said the same thing about Tesla, so opinions and cultural preferences can change fast, especially when people find out how much more efficient it is.

@@samuraidoggy You have no idea what you are talking about! How about you do some research before you speak? First of all, it's not light weight, it weighs as much as an ICE vehicle, other EVs are just extremely heavy. As for suspension and ride, people who have driven it will tell you you can't tell it's a three wheeled vehicle due to the weight distribution and type of suspension it has. As for rattling, all the units so far are hand built, so there was no focus on noise. With most of the parts being molded in production, the entire vehicle will fit together perfectly. Then there's the fact that carbon fiber is sound deadening compared to metal. It may be classified as an autocycle, but it was designed to function like a car in both performance and safety.

@PAcifisti
@PAcifisti 3 ай бұрын
Reason why they might've not start production yet is because solar panels that would actually recharge any meaningful amount don't exist. This car has what, maybe 2 square meters of solar panels? They can't even be aligned towards the sun as they're fixed angle on the roof. Unless you live on the equator it's going to be sub-optimal. You would struggle to break 200W of charging power under optimal sun conditions with this, and that level of charging is just not going to cut it no matter how aerodynamic they make it. You can maybe get like 10-20km of charge per day in The most optimal conditions with a brand new and spotless car. In most real life conditions it's going to be a lot less. My laptop has a stronger charger than this car's "unlimited" range under the best conditions. That should tell you all about it.
@meatisomalley
@meatisomalley 3 ай бұрын
@@PAcifisti This is just wrong, stop talking out of your ass. The full solar package is 3 square meters of solar. Under normal conditions, one square meter generates 200-300 watts per hour (under ideal conditions it's 1000). With 3 square meters, aptera is claiming 700 watts per hour, which is very reasonable. Aptera claims over 40 miles on the sunniest of days in hot places like Cali, and the math seems to check out. On colder days around 20 miles.
@PAcifisti
@PAcifisti 3 ай бұрын
@@meatisomalley Under ideal conditions it's ~200 watts per hour per square meter. 1000 watts is the amount of power coming out of the sun. It's absolutely impossible to catch it all. Good solar panels can in best conditions capture around 24%. This car however will NEVER be able to capture anywhere near the max. The panels will never be fully pointing towards the sun as the car has a curved body. Aptera can Claim they get 233 watts per m3 but that seems a bit optimistic given the above. Not to mention that in real life conditions the panels would be dirty and have scratches all over the surfaces as all cars get. Or the fact that they would be most likely pointing away from the sun. In essence, their claim is that they would get the same amount of energy as top of the line panels installed on a swiveling mounts that tracks the sun... from the top of a car, angled in all directions while affected by road dirt and debris? I'm not convinced. Three square meters of panels seems quite a lot for the size of the car, though the effective size of the panels is going to be lower for reasons pointed above.
@meatisomalley
@meatisomalley 3 ай бұрын
@@PAcifisti Alright, I'm a bit of a dingus so you'll have to bear with me, but let's do some napkin math. Aptera claims to use 100 watt-hours per mile driven. in a hotter place like Arizona or Cali, Aptera claims to generate 28 miles per day on average, so we need 2.8 kwh generated per day. the average solar irradiance in a place like LA or Pheonix is 5-7 KwH/sq.m/day. The Aptera has more than 3 square meters of solar, so let's say 18 kwhs of coverage per day. With these fairly middle-of-the-road numbers, the solar panels would require an end-to-end efficiency of 16% in order to generate the necessary 2.8 watt-hours per day. Yes, this is assuming perfect conditions, but it seems like a fairly sane 'ideal' number to me. Keep in mind that the aptera is very flat compared to most cars, so their solar panels, if positioned correctly, will capture a good amount of sun per day.
@PAcifisti
@PAcifisti 3 ай бұрын
@@meatisomalley That's a lot of IF's. If it has 3m2 of solar panels, which don't seem to exist in any of the cars in the video. If it can do 100wh per mile and If it can pull off 16% efficiency. You can see the panels themselves under the glass and the front is more like 0.5m2. Roof ain't much better either. Where's the rest of the 1.5-2m2? Rear doesn't seem to have any. This doesn't even factor in the suboptimal angles they're pointing to the sun with. The front panel is still quite steeply angled compared to the roof so you'll never get a moment when both are optimally pointing at the sun. This means that the panels installed at the car will always have lower than installed total area actually pointing to the sun. After factoring off dirt, panel wear and scratches, 16% starts sounding rather... optimistic. It's not exactly a good one if it could do this Once during the most sunniest day available and then would need daily washing to keep it generating anything meaningful. And another problem - Unlike solar panels that sit on the rooftop open to the sun 24/7, a car will spend time in garages and parking halls. With this car you'll have to leave it out to the elements 24/7 if you want to get any mileage out of the panels. I don't tend to believe manufacturer hype BS until they can actually Prove it. They're not here to save the world or create a good product, they're here to make as much money as possible. Hype and unrealistic promises are the key element to get gullible techBro's to buy into it. Because in the end it would still be better to install these panels to the top of your garage for more optimal angle & out of the way of road grime and rock impacts. They would generate way more electricity that you could charge your car with and spent the rest to run your home. And you can keep your car away from the elements and sun degredation.

Things like "no one can get them" and "what we have now works better" applied then just the same, which is why a large amount of people thought that automobiles were just a fad. This is similar to what's going on now with these types of electric vehicles and autonomous driving test runs. People say the same thing, but every year they get a little more prevalent and [I personally feel] we are approaching an inflection point. My point is, maybe currently it seems like a fantasy but (as long as something catastrophic doesn't happen) this is the way the future seems to be headed and calling it a fantasy is like people in the early 1900's calling automobiles a fantasy. The fact that there is a working prototype indicates that, even if this specific prototype / company doesn't get released widespread, there are successful efforts.

I can imagine electric vehicles being overall more modular and something like a pc where you can upgrade and customize by changing out parts or just build your own completely with more standardized parts being sold across the board. Probably won't be as accessible as something like building a pc due to the nature of the car industry and cost, but more than it already is for internal combustion engine cars as you have to basically be a full on mechanic to know how to begin to build one

@rogerphelps9939 That is an incredibly broad statement. North of where? And it is also working on the false premise that just because you are up north you somehow don't have the sun. Even Canada would have a season where they could use that car. It's very small but rich people would still buy it to show off for 3 months. I am somewhat far north being in Northern California close to the Oregon border. I get plenty of sun.

The QR code is an excellent idea, and imo very sustainable for a profitable company as people tend to keep their cars for much longer than small electronics like phones. This would help the company get a regular stream of profit from it's customers in a way that benefits both the user and the company. I would assume that it would also enable users to upgrade their cars much more easily and reliably which would in turn bring down the cost of used parts. Absolutely amazing.
@ilnahro3008

All car companies have that regular income stream. Where do you thing workshops get their parts? Most will source them directly from the manufacturers or their direct suppliers. They have stated in some of their videos that making the car upgradable as well as repairable is an intentional design element. So, if better batteries are developed, or whatever, the owner will be able to swap out old components for the newer, upgraded ones. In essence, you have a car that can be 'remade' every so many ears, greatly extending its usable life. That is highly unusual in modern consumer-product manufacturing, which is almost all based on disposability.

Have been following this company for a while now. If they ever make it to production I'll definitely be considering one. Just such a unique design, and the solar panels would be great for commuting for sure.

I would definitely get the solar package. As an apartment dweller, I park on the street and do not have access to a charger so this would be awsome. Also not having to pay for charging would be a significant bonus.

Appreciate your Aptera review and exposure Jerry! My wife and I have followed Aptera from the beginning and are so excited about the vehicle design and how the company operates. Not only super efficient, modular design for manufacturing, to development transparency, and supporting right to repair, but then following/implementing the advice of the likes of Sandy Munro from the very start, it continues to get better just when you think it could not!!

A few notes…Aptera also has a more refined ‘Gamma’ version that was in Europe during filming. The final version will be made of carbon fiber. Battery sizes will be 250, 400, 600 or 1,000 miles of range. If you invest $10K you can be one of the first 2,000 to receive one next year.

also they ditched the single sided swingarm months ago... the split window is because the door is too curved to have a full pane of glass side into it (theyve said this themselves I think) and also... Alaska receives more sunlight than any other state. I love this guys videos but he should pay more attention to what he says instead of just going of the cuff and saying silly stuff like Alaska doesnt have as much sunlight when the exact opposite is true. Also, let me mention that less drag equaling more efficiency is not a physics "loophole" or a "glitch in physics" its BASIC physics

@@AlistairBalister It could hold the glass just fine it just wouldn't be able to open . Personally I'd take this tradeoff especially if they also did the cool lower bubble concept Peter Jorgensen designed..😉

@@AlistairBalister Yes, Alaska receives more sunlight than any other state averaged over a whole year, but that's not telling the full story. That light is mostly concentrated within about half the year with the other half being mostly nighttime. There's still some darkness in the summer and light in the winter depending on latitude, but it wouldn't be enought to charge an electric vehicle. Perhaps you're the one who should pay more attention before saying silly stuff.

I'm an old gear head, but ... In reality this is the essence of hotrodding. And it is the future. Being large, old, and creaky, I doubt that this model will work for me personally, but there is no reason that one with a better fit is not possible. And it would have more room for solar panels. Bring it on!

I'd actually buy that~ It looks super futuristic, it's really efficient, has great range and I'll be able to sleep in the back of it thanks to the 7 ft of cargo room in the back

I would totally get one of those. Solar charged and very aerodynamic, as well as modular parts and practicality. This would be cool and smart to have!
