So, I hope you read this. you mentioned monetizing the game, which is 100% logical and ethical because you work for it, but, for people like me who live in third world countries, we can't buy the game, in fact, we can't have any payments to you unless you somehow support local banks which is near impossible. I don't really want to say this, but in case you want to make this game paid, People like me have to use piracy, which is unethical, but only way for us to enjoy the game. What I would love to see is you make the game free, and take donations or sell cosmetics so people like me can enjoy the game. This might sound weird, but this is something you have to consider. I love your videos and I hope you get well soon.

Ideally, although no promises yet, the game will follow an Asperite-like model, where if you build the game from the code, you can have it for free, as an alternative to buying the game. But if you can't do that, and you have no way to buy the game, or you don't have any disposable income, I have no objection with you pirating the game, so don't feel guilty if you do!

@@finalforeach Just a thought but back in the day it was very easy to pirate MC, or at least have a friend log in just once and then you'd play by clicking "play offline" and you could still have a singleplayer experience. Speaking as a pixel artist, don't just make darker shades of your textures more black like you've done with the sand. Shift the darker shades of yellow and brown towards red, and green and white towards blue. This will give the textures that warmer, more saturated look you wanted a couple videos ago.

A suggestion for the distant future: Instead of having biome based chunks, have a variable based chunk. Each biome have a Temperature variable and a humidity variable. Combined with surface elevation level this will determine what type of plantlife (if any) the chunk will have. From -20 to +50 celsius, where -20 is ice covered (glazier), -10 is snow covered, 0 is partially snow covered, +10 has needle based trees (like pine and spruce), +20 has leaf based trees, +30 and above has rain forest trees. Humidity level (none, low, medium and high) could determine how much plantlife is likely to generate within the chunk, with no humidity basically being desert. A chunk next to another chunk will usually have either the same temperature variable, one higher, or one lower. At temperature level +15 you would get a mix of both needle and leaf based trees along with perhaps some unique type of plants for that temperature. Naturally there will also be less plantlife the higher up you go, resulting in the top of the taller mountains having nonthing at all. Maybe the chunks may have a small chance to have a hidden status switch, (like Radiation, Infested and Enchanted) meaning you could get some unique magical looking plantlife, animal life, and athmospheric effects to allow for more non-Earth-like terrain. Game name suggestion: Land of Milk and Honey
@Syz_gy

To make the generation look something like biomes, and create stretches of land that are both large and cohesive within this system, Wave Function Collapse as a procedural generation algorithm can be used, with weighted values to sculpt the terrain with a bit more control.

For the name of the game I feel like complexity is where other sandbox games fall short. It should be something simple without the use of 'craft' somewhere in it's name as I feel that the overuse of it in other tech demo style games makes the games come off as tacky or a rushed clone. A name like 'Generations' may be fitting as it is simple and relevant to what you've created (going off of your epilogue). Simplicity and relevance is the key. You've done an outstanding job so far, have a happy holidays! :)

So thoughts on your premise - I'm playing through vintage story right now, and what I really like compared to Minecraft is a more interesting sense of progression. In maybe your first time playing Minecraft, there's a bit of challenge, but once you're even just decent at the game, it's relatively easy to get any gear you need as to make difficulty trivial. As my brother and I have been playing vintage story however, even in late summer we're still needing to manage food, we're far from having all the resources we need, and we're doing all we can to prepare for winter. The game has ticking clocks, and a better designed progression I'd say than Minecraft. Obviously, any game will become stale over time, but you can design a decent progression system to make your achievements feel more meaningful. Whether you are interested in vintage story difficulty or not, I think giving players tangible goals would be good to focus on. I like the colonist idea, because perhaps it's like other games where you need to heal the world, that the world is initially toxic to you in some way. Maybe if you're up for the challenge, the goal can be building up a base for new colonists to arrive and help you. A lot of Minecraft mods like millenaire and tektopia have attempted a village system like this, but I think that a game where that was much better integrated with less glitches would be awesome. Whatever you decide, I think that focusing on a sci fi angle would help you stand out. Most Minecraft derivatives are going fantasy. I seem to remember, correct me if I'm wrong, that you were interested in the game being more vibrant. This could be a good further contrast to vintage story. Subnautica and Journey to the Savage Planet might be interesting inspirations. My last comment, I think that one thing vintage story has done great is more complex models than just blocks. They make the world feel more alive than Minecraft, so I think you might consider that to add interesting complexity. Well, I hope that some of my ideas might be helpful. Whatever you decide, I can't wait to see where this game goes!

I find the idea of new movement options to be very enticing. Mechanics like wall running and crawling on command will greatly differentiate this project from other Minecraft like games. Parkouring around a large structure instead of building scaffold that will need to be removed later sounds great. Adventure style maps and parkour maps would benefit from those features. An entire new dimension to combat where players are crawling under each others noses or wall running above them. I would personally love to see new movement mechanics in this game.

In my opinion, the mobs spawning should not be based on the lighting level like in Minecraft, the mob spawning should be dealed with hostile structure/dungeons (maybe by using a mob spawner block just like in Minecraft), because when you think about it for a minute, the mob spawning in Minecraft make no sense at all, you build your house in peace and 2 sec later, a creeper literally materialize out of thin air 15 blocks away and blow your base lol. Maybe there could be a mechanic to only destroy 1/8 of a block, potentially with some special item. This would allow for even more creative freedom, as we would have the ability to create 1/8 blocks, and would also solve the issue of how slabs and vertical slabs would be placed. this would also allow for far less inventory clutter. the largest issue (practically, not coding-wise) i can think of is that this would make partial blocks less cost-efficient, unless we got the 1/8 blocks back somehow.

@@MrMoon-hy6pn that's an extremely great point, although the existence of minetest is vital, minetest is still a general framework that resembles Minecraft, but doesn't have the specialty and wotk being put to resemble that minecraft feeling, as a standalone piece of infrastructure it's absolutely impressing ND I believe deserves more attention, it's the epitomy of free and open Minecraft-like baseline that can be transformed into literally just anything, you can straight up just run lua, the freedom is straight up bonkers, while I love it and respect it, doesn't get that Minecraft clone set of goals, it isn't limited and directed to replicating and improving Minecraft. It would be absolutely great to release the code although completely up to the developer, not gonna like I'd like to him succeed in selling his this better Minecraft and even going as far to push the development team of mojang to do better, stop pumping out like poop updates and focus on building weekly, monthly snapshot, while savaging through a billion lines of good for shit java code in order to get the game to at least run better, while we wait for that to happen, I think we should be able to enjoy an up and coming Minecraft regeneration in the meantime. Mark my words, Minecraft competition will be as real as it goes in 5-10 years time, because if you look at the voxel community, there's hundreds of open source, devlogged voxel projects running concurrently, voxel tech will reach it's nexus event, the voxel will become perfect, because there's is an extreme amount of voxel LOD systems, and graphics drivers, everything will, is and has been made to bring voxel games to the top, not just by the amount of project, but how many of them are also open source and innovating in the best way possible, people can load millions and billions of voxels, I've seen hyper realistic, ultra fast voxel builds and simulations running on a god damn browser, and that's not even all, this is just one that has been hit by the algorithm, there's 100 more special projects Like cubyz, with procedural Crafting and other crazy features, voxel future is here

Hey, As a random person you haven't heard of, here's what I think Minecraft could have done better: Building: I think a system like Factorio's blueprints would be absolutely revolutionary for building. (Maybe construction bots too, but those aren't super necessary.) In Minecraft, the block-by-block method of building does have something to it, but I don't think it's worth the cost. It makes building so unnecessarily difficult. Imagine what people would build if they could actually 'copy-paste', and if getting large amounts of resources wasn't such a chore. 'Megabuilds' would actually be accessible to regular people. What's so profound about Factorio's blueprints is that they perfectly cut out all busywork. Whenever you encounter a situation you've been in before, you can just copy-paste your last solution and you're on to the next challenge. I think this translates perfectly well from technical problems to creative decisions. Movement: Imagine Minecraft but with Doom Eternal or Portal -style mobility. I feel like not only would this add so much to traversal, but it would make building more interesting, with players designing structures to work well with their favorite movement abilities. I'm glad to see you experimenting with wall-running. (Dashes, grappling hooks for swinging, wings for gliding, portals, etc.) (Portals are quite hard I know, but if you decide to try them, Sebastian Lague has a very good video on implementing them.) (One idea of my own is a 'hover' ability: when the button is held, an upward force is added to the player for every nearby block with air above it, proportional to the square of the distance from the block. This could feel like how Subnautica Below Zero's Snowfox should have felt if it wasn't so weak - you could intentionally get close to the ground and then turn it on for a powerful leap.) Things to build: My biggest problem with Minecraft is that, while I enjoy building, there's not much to build. This is a tough problem because you want to keep building intrinsically motivated. My (admittedly kind of complicated) proposal is to have the ability to submit your structures to randomly spawn in other people's worlds (sometimes partially buried or destroyed). This way you know other people will see what you make, while also making the world truly unknown. In Minecraft, everyone knows exactly what structures are going to spawn and what's in them. It would be amazing if you truly never knew what you were going to find, because players were constantly adding to the pool of possible structures. Truly endless exploration. Physics: I know this one's quite hard to implement too. But, along with mechanics to interact with it, I think a good physics system would take the sandbox nature of the game to the next level. As one example, imagine how much deeper Minecraft's combat would be with the simple change that the damage you deal is increased the faster you're moving towards the target - you'd be jumping off cliffs to kill enemies in one hit, actually using mounts in combat, and firing bows while riding a horse towards the enemy for extra arrow speed. (Here's a specific melee combat idea: imagine if your sword was an entity of its own which tries to follow where you're looking, but with quite a bit of inertia. It would be so cool to really slash with the mouse itself, and to feel the weight of the weapon like that. Maybe enemy melee weapons could work the same way, and you could actually block attacks with your sword, but like, by actually putting your weapon in the right place and with the right angle instead of just right-clicking or something.) Block grid size: Maybe you could experiment with making the player 3 blocks tall (and >1 block wide)? (Not to make the player big, but to make the blocks small.) It would be an easy change that you could try now, and I think it would freshen up the whole game. I feel like it would invite players to try building new things instead of automatically turning to their old Minecraft habits. You could even try making the block grid quite small relative to the player - the player could even be 5 or even 8 blocks tall (which would probably require the ability to mine multiple blocks at once). My most radical idea: disconnected block grids. This could allow some really cool stuff like boats, airships, ground vehicles, submarines, and maybe things like Terraria's sky islands but which actually move. Imagine the insane mechanisms the technical redstone people would build with this and maybe a physics system. Anyway, you do you! I'm just some wanna-be game designer who's way too confident in his own opinions... Don't be afraid to try anything radically new! And don't feel like you have to add everything from Minecraft, or like you have to add everyone's ideas. If you don't want to add something as big as the combat system, go ahead and don't add it! Focus on unique ideas that you like.

@6:11 you don't need to pass face normals as attributes. A simple normalize(cross(dFdx(pos),dFdy(pos))) is enough, pos is your position, passed from the vertex shader to the fragment/pixel shader.

The mention of things like crawling, wall jumping, and a more in-depth lore history fills me with excitement for what a so-called "Minecraft clone" could be. Minecraft's influence makes it undeniable where the inspiration comes from, but there is so much you can do (and appear to be doing) that Minecraft itself didn't. I especially like that you're taking a critical approach to judging mechanics like wall jumping to ensure mechanics only get added if they would be a positive addition. One thing I'm really liking the look of is the inventory approach. I watched a video recently discussing Minecraft's "inventory problem" and how the limitation on your inventory space seems really spacious at first, but becomes a problem quickly, especially as more items and blocks get added. I'm glad to see you aren't just following what Minecraft did and are coming up with your own solutions, so I'll be happy to see how you decide to handle inventory and crafting long-term. One idea I've had in the past was having a separate "inventory" for blocks, items, and tools, so each can have it's own mechanics to make use of space. But I'm sure there are many better solutions.
@K3rhos
@K3rhos Жыл бұрын
And also the more important thing that ppl don't think about the inventory is the stacks limit ! 64 was maybe a good balance in Minecraft early days, but I think nowdays they should go for 128, 256 or even higher stack. As an example, when you go mining, you start digging with your pickaxe, and you go down until you reach the diamond layer, but at this point, you probably already have like 3-4 stacks of Cobblestone. If the stack amount was bigger let's say 512, you could just be left with one stack of a single block type in your inventory ! And that's a huge space gain. Cobblestone, Stone, Dirt, etc... should all have 512 max stack to me, because they are common used blocks. For the more uncommon block you could keep the 64 or 16 max stacks. Satisfactory inventory system manage this really well in my opinion !

I like the premise for the game. Having two separate factions of monsters that were designed to kill each other as much as you can have a really awesome emergent gameplay feel when they fight each other over you, like in Rain World or other such games. With the movement mechanics you already have for the player, I can't wait to see what kind of crazy jumping monsters and flying robots, etc you come up with. Variety of movement is one of the things I've always thought every voxel game I've ever played really fails at; but here it's in the first pre alpha dev video where player interaction was added at all. Can't wait to see more of and finally directly support this project!

I'm so excited to try it out for myself because at this point we can't even call this a complete clone of minecraft anymore. And for the name, what about "New Horizons" to symbolize the fact that you've come from your world (possibly dying or whatever) to (re)discover a whole new planet (also a nice little refference/pun to the upgraded render distance compared to minecraft)

Will fit well with the lore, and make the player feel like they either can restart their playthrough if it isnt permadeath, but will not be able to restart civilization if they quit. A big differentiator would be to give the game more resolution. You can do this by allowing the player to use a tool that will remove a portion of a block. This will negate the need for stair or slab variants. You can just carve a stair out of the block.

Amazing ! This project give me so much hype ! Here is a short list of what I think should be added/improved over Minecraft: - Using a cubic chunks system with "infinite" or really high build height (I don't remember if you already did this) - Implement a sort of "wrench" to be able to rotate blocks that can be rotated (slabs, stairs, chest, etc...) - Bigger stacks, for example, in Minecraft the max is 64 for a stack, but some stuff like Cobblestone should definitely go over this amount in my opinion, because when you go mining you quickly have like 5~6 stacks of cobblestone in your inventory and that's really annoying, I think blocks that are really common, like Cobblestone should go to like ~512 for a single stack and for more uncommon items you can have less. It will definitely help with the inventory space and management. Also some keywords I thought for the name of the game: - Build Up - Thrive - Evolve

Cool project. Not to overscope or anything, but one thing I always wanted in Minecraft was a better fluid simulation. I specifically like the idea of a cave system slowly being filled with water, little pockets of air being formed where the water can't reach, or actually having to worry about how much water you have left. If I'm not mistaken, there's an old Minecraft mod that implements something like this, along with other interesting features like pipes and faucets and stuff. The suggestion you mentioned about fluids passing through non-solid tiles also sounds really interesting, reminds me of how grates work in Dwarf Fortress (fluids can pass through them, but not entities, and you can fish through them and toggle them open with a lever).

In the future you could add a friction value for different categories of blocks so that wall sprinting reduces gravity differently depending on the material. Slippery blocks like ice shouldn't cause this effect. If the friction is too high it could damage the player. Friction value could have other use cases like sliding, so it's not THAT niche of an addition. Unlike in minecraft, leaf blocks shouldn't be completely solid and should reduce fall damage. They could also have a chance to break into sticks depending on the player velocity at contact.

Couple of thoughts - I would like to see "falling sand" style falling sand, ie sand should form piles when dropped from the sky instead of pillars. - I'd like if water acted more like a fluid than it does in minecraft, it should be built from the ground up to actually be volumetric, that way water pumps actually do something. - Colored lights should emit the color profile of a normal light bulb + a filter (basically white but one color is prominent), that way they would look a lot more natural. - Please think hard about whether or not you really need survival mechanics like minecraft's, Eating food is just chore after the first hour of gameplay and it would be nice not to have to deal with that. - One trap I see devs fall into when making games like minecraft is the inherent tension between the need for the player to move and fly around for building, and the need for the player to not be able to fly for survival and combat. Not really sure how to solve it, but it is a problem in minecraft too. I wonder if you could "build" stuff in a creative mode-like state as a template and then have a bunch of drones fly around actually placing the blocks for large structures. - For sub blocks like stairs and slabs, it would be nice if you could just get half size blocks to make the the slabs out of, ie 0.5m^3 cubes where four placed on a normal block would make a half slab

Potential name idea: "Conduct, Consider, Conquer" I tried to capture the major elements of the summary you gave in a way that sounded good. "Conduct" refers to the mad science, machinery, and factory mechanics that will likely be a unique/identifying aspect of your game. Of course, you have to lead with what makes your game stand out. "Consider" has two functions: Lore-wise, it has to do with figuring out what happened to the ancient civilization, putting the pieces of the puzzle together; and gameplay-wise, it captures the curiosity and get-your-mind-thinkin' stuff that makes up the essence of what an open-world sandbox is. "Conquer" serves a similar purpose as the second function of "consider". It helps sell the open-world explorative and mechanic-mastering aspects of the game, and it uses its place as the last bit of the title to really hit home that you can eventually work your way to being the dominant force of a (recently) untapped world. Also, it's very abbreviate-able. 3-Con, or something. Okay, maybe I'm trying to sell this a bit too much. I dunno, it has a nice ring to it.

Which is why I have to strongly recommend avoiding single block machines as a lot of minecraft mods do, as they just don’t feel aesthetic/realistic enough. My suggestion would be to utilize multiblock structures for machines as much as possible. Some great examples of minecraft mods that you can use for inspiration would be Immersive Engineering, and a fun one I have been getting into lately, HBM’s Nuclear Tech Mod. Why not just have a picture instead, that you can include in the block files? Plus, then you could change what something looks like in your inventory to something else. (Also, with this system you’re using, I’d imagine 2d items will look weird on the hotbar)

this is the current system that Minecraft uses. items have a different tag and use their 2D sprites instead of 3D projections. when you would make a mod that adds blocks, this would be much more simple than having to render your own 3D block just for the hotbar, and it takes up less storage. i see how it would seem more difficult for modders, but you'd be able to customize everything the same amount if not more than minecraft. i do understand what would make you think that though.

Imagine a system similar to Minecraft's advancements, paired together with a story system, where you can ignore the story and still have a good playing experience, but if you choose to follow the story, it progresses in accordance to the advancements chronology and allows to unlock certain hidden features, recipes, lore, etc. Imagine if the story could change slightly with the provided world seed. I’ve seen it suggested a little about adding temperature mechanics to the game, and I personally think that would work great with the post-apocalyptic genre you seem to be going for. Also, as both a question and suggestion, will you do connected textures? I noticed at the very end that you had made some glass for your house, but I know I personally don’t like borders around them and I’d love to see connected textures built into the game. Also also, I am so excited for this game, I love Minecraft to bits, but I’ve always disliked how in order to have some of the bare necessities to play the game (i.e. connected textures, rendering optimization mods, and tweakeroo) I am forced to look to the modding community. The essentially built-in modding capability for blocks and the like is exactly what I wish was possible with Minecraft’s datapack system (I hope something like that could be implemented for the game as well). Overall, I’m loving everything about this project so far, though I will note that I worry about the increasing demand for features will begin to place pressure on you, so I encourage you to work at whatever pace is necessary to keep up the good work. So, another suggestion for character models, which I have personally used as a foundation in developing the cosmetics for the game War Brokers, is the Simple Series characters by Synty Studios. Skin customization is fairly simple as well for those models, which I have also done for War Brokers.

Hm sir is this comment to advertise your game

@@oightKoreraAreEditable No, and if anything it's an ad for Synty Studios. I don't get paid for or by either, so it's not me advertising anything other than a model design that I think works well and already has a ton of assets and proven customization..

Since you added wall running (and maybe might even add wall jumping back in the future), I presume you are looking to make movement fun in this game, and I'm all for it. If I may, I have some suggestions to make movement quite interesting. Sprint speed should start out just slightly faster than walking, and increase over a short period, adding an element of momentum to running. Thus, you could only perform a wall run at near maximum speed, and the distance you can wall run is dependant on the speed starting the wall run. Since you added crouching and crawling, perhaps it might be fitting to add sliding too - if you toggle crouch mode as you are running, you'll slide a short distance instead. The length of the slide is dependant on the speed. And, most importantly, one would not lose a lot of momentum from this, allowing for continued running after going under an obstacle. Another commenter has suggested such, and I completely agree, to add the ability to grab ledges and climb over them. I'd like to also suggest the ability to hold onto ledges and move sideways while doing so, basically adding climbing. You could even go a step further and add the ability to jump while grabbing a ledge, but perhaps that is too much.

The name should be related to the theme of the game, so depends how unique it will be from Minecraft

This has been a point of contention that really matters for me and is related to the topic here. For player movement, collisions, and other physics will you try to accurately mimic the way it works in Minecraft? For example, through a clean room reverse engineering approach. A big part of what makes Minecraft gameplay feel the way it is is how nice movement is (especially the period from release 1.7 to 1.9). Many mineclones out there fail to replicate this as its just not on their radar. Although, if you do end up doing this I hope you do away with X-Z axis collision differences (and by extension the southeast rule)

2nd comment when when you dropped the lore like that i became even more invested with this game and so i think it would be really neat to have structures /dungeons in your game represent old human’s civilization so factories and cities barrie’s under cares, overgrown vehicles like tanks in a forest or bunkers 🤔 Also name suggestions: Factorypunk, Earth Reborn, Auto Civilization, idk lol

Thank you for your videos - they're a really informative look into the process of building a Minecraft-like project that is more than the hacky 1-day or 1-week examples we see everywhere on YT. For those of us who may be excited for Hytale but are frustrated by the lack of news, your project is a beacon of hope showing us something new with a ton of potential. I'm looking forward to a pre-alpha, and meantime, I hope you and yours have a happy and peaceful holiday season!

I absolutely love the new movement mechanics you added to the game, especially the wall running. I'm hoping you can move forward with this.

Can glass not be a grid? That’s like the number one complaint when building with glass in Minecraft. Sci-fi tends to be a sub genre of fantasy, so which fantasy elements present would help the naming process. (So like, is there a pantheon of gods?) Or are you trying the old school minimal fantasy approach?

It would be cool and unique if you could use both hands of your character, for example to fight with two swords. My idea is to use the left or right mouse button for the left and right hand. To break blocks or to attack you use tools or weapons, to place blocks simply use blocks and to eat use food. With the fist you could attack or trigger something like a button or lever. To break something with your hands is usually very painful and an apple or dirtblock wouldn't really help you with this task. 😉 I'd love to see it ingame.

Hi, a minecraft server developer here. You spoke about mod support in your video. I am big fan of mods and serwer which generally extend a lifetime of game. It would mean a lot to implement a scripting laungage to make easier to create content in your game. Python/Lua could be a great tool. Love your videos

Looking good, from seeing the house building I have one very simple note: IMPLEMENT A GOSH DANG CROSSHAIR That is all, you made many mistakes and it took a while for you to orient yourself due to missing the exact point you were looking at, and it should be really simple. Now if you want to expand this you should but only when you have the options menu, here are some suggestions to include: * Crosshair shape * Crosshair colour * Crosshair valid target colour (change colour when something is targetable with the current tool) * Crosshair valid target shape (the change shape to the colour option just above) All the cursor related things are for when in menus and arent as important for now. * Cursor shape * Cursor colour * Cursor outline yes/no * Cursor outline colour And a photo mode akin to Minecraft's F1, but that can wait and should be customizable through settings, like menu opacity per item, & which menu elements get removed. I really love this project, thanks for sharing it with everyone here!

I know it's a long way off, but what are some core features you'll be adding? For example, will there be any magic or fantasy elements, and if so, what will be included?
