I remember a similar game from my childhood, it came out in 2002 and was called Medieval Total War. The only difference being that it had a slightly better graphics

You forgot to mention Field of Glory Empires and the upcoming Field of Glory Kingdoms, which are grand strategy games that tie into these wargames. If you own both FoG2 and FoG Empires you can play out the campaign battles in FoG2. It's an interesting way of doing it!

@@AndysTake I always love it when games combine a grand strategic with a tactical battle layer, so the way Empires and FoG2 interact with each other is great. In Empires I do enjoy the population mechanics and how decadence makes it more difficult to keep a large empire healthy. Prevents the usual unstoppable "blobbing" of most grand strategies.

@@AndysTake I usually just toy around with a game until I grok it, so I can't recommend any tutorials. Rome, Carthage and the Ptolemaic Empire are good factions to start with.

I really do enjoy this series, but it's very important to note that this is a digital version of a TABLETOP miniatures wargame (dice rolls, morale checks, etc.). The ruleset isn't particularly explained well in game, but it was easy enough to pick up after a few hours.

@@AndysTake on the topic of smaller niche wargames, I would recommend you check out "Graviteam Tactics: Mius Front" and "Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2". They may be too niche and hardcore for what this channel talks about though.

@@AndysTake Mius Front might be more in line with the other games you cover since it's partially turn based operational level and partially RTS battles. Though it's got it's own complications due to a non new player friendly UI. For WitE2, the only way to learn it is watch multi hour youtube series/read the 500 page manual (lol), but the manual does have a helpful new player section that walks you through the first few turns.

Big fan of Field of Glories Empires and Field of Glory 2, which I always play in unison (FOGE for the grand campaign and FOG2 for the battles, you can export battles from FOGE to FOG2 and play them that way). Just reinstalled recently and found it pretty easy to get back up the learning curve. Might check out some of their newer titles when the shiney wears off FOGE and FOG2!

Well, you'll probably find, like I did, that the game isn't as great as you think. Not only do they just reskin different types of units a lot, but the devs and fanboys of these games don't take criticism all that well.

Hey Andy. I would like to point your attention to another historical game/series. It is called Imperiums : Greek wars and it is set in time of rule of Philip II, Alexander's father. Not only does it offer Map with thing that Total war has, but you can do things not possible there as well. Combat is more primitive, but still quite nice. In two years, they even managed to release DLC's, which could be it's own separate games - Troy, Alexander the Great, and are about to release Caesar in Gaul. Since Total war community continues to complain about lack of other franchises to rival Total War, I am dissapointed that none of bigger names - JackieFish, Legend of Total War, You and others somehow missed it. Please, give it a try.

There are various types of fortification terrain included and these were used to make the free downloadable Alesia game. However, not all the fortification terrain types have been implemented and it would be great to see that implemented

I hate people who act as if the TW games only ever belonged to the historical fans and CA all but betrayed them by making the TW: Warhammer games, even though some of the most popular TW mods ever made were based on fantasy settings. To me it looked like a historical tactical game. I saw nothing strategic in this video. It was all tactical battles? Strategy is about how to wage a war. Tactics is about how to conduct a battle.

FoG 2 and FoG 2 Medieval only offers connected battles. There's another game, FoG Empires, that offers a more Total War style campaign map that then loads up Fog 2 to play out any battles. They really need to combine it all into one game when FoG 3 eventually comes out.

Well you decide the moves of your own units of course, but everything is dependent on the situation and what the enemy does :)

@@JayKahns Well, imho it takes too much agency from the player, especially with the warfare system. Then, you can fairly easy automate the economy to run well without your inputs. So it just leaves you staring at the screen, at best changing your laws from time to time.

NO ! No! NO! I owned FOG and while it was ok, it had serious flaws . Battles end 3/4 of the way through , you never get to make a final come back, like at the battle of Zama. My elite Carthage HI was waiting to attack when the game ended !! no option to continue! As well, you cannot setup your troops at the beginning of a battle, to test "what if scenarios" . The whole game seems scripted and biased towards a set ending. I was very disappointed with this one - 4 / 10.

@@よしみ-x5j That's because in field of Glory one side achieve victory by routing at least 60% of the opponent army, or you can have a crushing victory if you rout at least 40% of the opponent army and have a difference of 25 in rout % (For exemple their army lost 40% and your only 15% you win). In solo you can choose to pursue the battle. Special epic battle have the deployment already done but allow you to play either side, you can also make some choice for some extra units.

In standard multiplayer games you choose whatever you want and place your units wherever you want. Only in the Epic battles are units set in place according to the historical placements.

Please don't try to promote these games Andy, as the developers of them, at least some of them, are quite toxic. Now, I'm not really the kind of person to label a community of a game toxic lightly. And I don't say it without some damn good reason. Basically, one of their developers on Steam perma banned me from both Field of Glory 2 games' Steam forums for pretty much no reason. I mean, one of the things he did to "justify" his banning of me on the Medieval forum was to go after a pretty much dead thread. But this all spawns from the fact that these devs and their rabid fanboys aren't too happy if you criticize their games in any way at all, as they pretty much tried to bully me into silence on the Steam forums for these games.

I call them out for their BS because they'll just turn into another company full of assholes if they never get called out. And while the games themselves are decent, the dev's fanatical clinging to a old TT game will only hurt what potential these games really have.
