Watch as I convert a spare bedroom into the ultimate indoor cycling paincave for both TrainerRoad and Zwift! This covers picking the room, building a computer, and my trainer setup as well. 👇Here's some of the stuff I used:
🎸Here's my cycling Spotify playlist: open.spotify.com/playlist/2J6...
📺The TVs I got: amzn.to/36sMOxv
▶️Tiltable floor tv stand: amzn.to/33ozRmk (Overall I really like it. Wish it went a tiny bit lower, but it's actually impressively steady and I'd buy it again.)
▶️Lasko performance blower fan: amzn.to/2GuZb16 (These things rock)
▶️Anker 5 port USB hub: amzn.to/30u96v6
Other gear I'm liking:
▶️HR Monitor: amzn.to/2IVJkGH
▶️HR Monitor strap (Longer battery life if you don't mind the strap): amzn.to/33sDhmu
▶️Fav foam roller: amzn.to/2TZq2GR
▶️Fav in-ride energy drink: amzn.to/3a5pi8L
▶️Fav recovery drink: amzn.to/396AC2Z
▶️Fav on-bike headphones: amzn.to/2IVJP3x

We tackled assembling the bike as a family project. kzbin.infoUgkxzg0clhbtRf2gGxPkVETFKJJKGqdsorQu The package is heavy, but I have 2 teen boys that were able to move it. The written instructions were great- we didn't need to watch the videos, but it was good knowing that the option was there if we needed it. After we were able to get it set up, the boys each rode 3 miles and I rode 8 and the bike stayed quiet. The display is easy to reset, and you can put it on whichever setting you are using (time, distance, calories, etc). I will say that my butt is a little sore from the seat, but that could be because I haven't rode in a while. While it is comfortable for me, it was not comfortable with the seat position for my friend (could not move the seat back far enough and he slightly looked like a kid riding a tricycle that he had outgrown). He also said that the seat hurt his manly parts. We are going to look for a different seat that will be compatible with this bike for him.I did purchase the Wahoo Cadence sensor and strapped it to the crank of one of the pedals. This will sync with my Apple Watch, iPhone and will import data in to my Health app. Wahoo does have other sensors available other than cadence. I can also keep either my phone or my iPad on the display and they both feel pretty secure.

Arrived as expected with all parts intact, also included two hex keys for assembly. kzbin.infoUgkxwOUUBdw8-88Iu4QnQS7q6b2NwZkHiYVl Had to adjust mine slightly to fit my bike, this was easy enough with instructions. I bought it to train with my track bike and found it to have resistance similar to climbing a slight gradient. Takes a while to learn to balance but there is plenty of guidance to help on the internet. Edit: There was more resistance at lower speeds because of the number of contact points but at higher speeds it is much easier as you don’t have to contend with drag.

Oooh those are cool! I did some research trying to find if there's an easy-ish way to incorporate some ambient lighting (like Phillips Hue) into the computer. I found a couple options but didn't pull the trigger on anything. Since I'm running a computer vs just an HDMI device I have some additional lower lost options, but haven't picked one yet. Totally agree though, love mood lighting

Congrats on your Pain Cave!! I have a Road bike that I keep on the trainer all set up next to the treadmill in my Pain Cave. It makes it very easy to train whenever you want without having to take off a tire or other setup issues. Just hop on and go. If you put a treadmill in there then you should consider the Stryd foot pod/power meter as it pairs well with Zwift Running. Helps get in the bricks.
@JustinDoesTriathlon

Smart! I've definitely kicked around the idea of getting a little bike just for indoor training, but I'd love duplicating my aero position. Who knows, maybe in another decade, lol! A treadmill is another good idea! That's probably the one con with this room; it's second floor. It's over the garage, but I don't know if I could get away it for noise. But yeah! That would be a great little setup.

Dude! Looks great 👍🏽. I have my own set up that’s very similar including the choice of paint! I also have a closet where I keep ALL ancillary stuff including gear and clothing for multiple sports. I actually still had my 50 inch plasma TVs and monitors from several computer systems I’ve had over the years I am able to connect to my iPhone with a few HDMI adapters. They DO heat up a bit but that’s not really a problem with the ceiling fan and stationary fan going at the same time. My ATT phone has unlimited data and great reception so I don’t use internet via cable or satellite. It’s all through the phone. I use Quadlocks to stabilize the phone when riding. Your videos are very inspirational and you have a fantastic personality young man (I’m 60 years old). Keep up the great work! 👊🏽
@JustinDoesTriathlon
@JustinDoesTriathlon 3 жыл бұрын
That's awesome, it's funny how different people can kind of circle on to the same choices (even down to paint!) It's funny, I know that sometimes people can have an attitude of like... "Oh just harden up and deal with it." And maybe there's something to be said for dealing with adversity in training, but I've dealt with terrible setups for a LONG time, and now I'm like... "Hey if it doesn't need to be terrible, why not make it great?" We spend a lot of time training and dealing with those built environments, and I'm all for making them as enjoyable and positive an experience as possible. Thanks for the kind words! Funny enough, I don't really 'feel' like the type of personality to make videos. I don't consider myself interverted per se, but it does take a lot of effort for me to sit down and put some content out there, so I appreciate that you're enjoying it. :) Good luck with your winter hours!

Awesome, congrats! I infinitely empathize with the lack of space; literally had to deal with tiny apartments for MANY years. You still have to do the work, of course, but it's great to have a spot that you can just dedicate to your effort. I think you're really going to like the dual screens: biggest tip is to get everything as low as you can. It's less of a big deal on the road bike, but on a tri bike, it really reinforces having a super low, heads down position. Enjoy!

"People mount their displays too high" "You should mimick the outdoor position indoors" I completely disagree, it's way too easy to strain your back outdoors. I have an indoor bike and the handlebars are higher/closer, making it so I can have a straight back and look at an angle that is higher on the wall. Thanks for the fan reccomendation! The setup is sick even though it's not how I'd do it for myself!
@JustinDoesTriathlon
@JustinDoesTriathlon 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting! See to me, that reads as your outdoor position isn't dialed in all the way? My outside position needs to be comfortable for 3-5 hours, and then I try to duplicate that on the indoor side of things. If I can't hold it indoors, I can't hold it outdoors. That said, I definitely get your point, and it's good to hear the perspective. No one should be in pain, that's for sure!

I didn’t see a stretching mat for before and after you time trial training sections, water dispenser, you can utilized some of the wall space with a bike mount that have space for your helmet, road shoes, bikes, bottle, etc. I will recommend a small dehumidifier to help with the moisture inside the room since you have carpet and not wood floor, I know you have fans but the moisture gets trapped in the room while you are training.

Yeah Ive got the lower one low but not tilted up cos I need to put a webcam on top of the lower TV. But dual 4K is JUST GREAT man.. you can do so many multitasking. I do online video courses while on endurance ride. Also you can do with more fans to feel comfortable. It helps to vapourise ur sweat ibsteas of trickling down to ur bike components. You're right about a rear fan which many overlook but I suggest a standing fan for the rear because u need to cool ur back.

My training room also has carpet and I found that the trainer wasn't very stable when I just had it on a trainer mat. I bought a piece of MDF the same size as the training mat and placed that under the mat. It made a world of difference to the stability of the trainer and I am also less concerned about making a hole in the mat and destroying the carpet underneath. Otherwise, your training room looks great - I like the idea of a low mounted TV - I made need to do that in the future...
@JustinDoesTriathlon
@JustinDoesTriathlon 3 жыл бұрын
The MDF is a really good idea.... My trainer is pretty stable, but more is always better. Sometime this winter I might do a rocker plate built, but honestly I'm just kinda mentally over constantly trying to do more and more. Rockers are built out of ply anyway though, so I could totally just buy some ply and put it under the mat in the meantime. That's a good idea! Oh and yeah, low tv is a BIG thing for me. I can't stand the setups that are so high. Being on aerobars probably exacerbates it vs being more upright on a roadbike, but it's super uncomfortable to me

The top one holds my keyboard and the bottom one holds my tv remote, fan remote (to turn them on or off when I'm warmed up) and smart phone. The blank spaces on the wall has bicycle art/photos. I painted the room a bright green which energized me. My training bicycle is attached to a Neo trainer and lacks any wheels as I built a front support. This way I never have to fill up the tire. The set-up is adjacent to a wall sized window that faces a bucolic back yard on the south side, no direct sunlight. I have two screens, one for Zwift and the other for streaming music, news, whatever. I also have room for a resistance machine.

Nicely done. Suggest adding a desk in front of your bike for fluids, nutrition, mobile device with Zwift Companion app, .... (I built my own with a 24" monitor on a VESA boom mount and the larger display mounted above and on a back wall). Also, mounted my rear fan on the wall behind me blowing down onto my back
@JustinDoesTriathlon
@JustinDoesTriathlon 3 жыл бұрын
I definitely might, that's a good idea. Right now the window sill is doing double duty on all that; I've also kicked around the idea of mounting a few bottle cages into the wall. Smart idea with the wall fan, I'm thinking of adding another lasko above both screens on a smart plug switch. If I did the desk I'd basically have to; that's the one problem with low floor mounted fans on a tri bike--your hands in aero block a lot of the wind.
@jallen1227
@jallen1227 3 жыл бұрын
@@JustinDoesTriathlon Yes, my bike is an Aero Road, therefore, not the same problem. As mentioned, I built my own desk with a pair of waterbottle holes built into the desk plus a bluetooth soundbar immediately below the boom mount. the top of the desk is level to the dropbars, therefore, I have a top accessible deep drawer to place miscellaneous items in at any time above the front tire. Also on the desk is a power strip charging everything including USB devices.

The one thing you left out is the camera on the side so you can see yourself on the bike. Almost everyone has an awareness problem, you think you’re doing something, but you’re not, or on a tri bike you may think you’re within your range of motion, but the camera may say otherwise. The mirror on the side doesn’t work here, you need to be in riding position. One of the things I’ve grown to love about coaching on Zoom is my clients can now see themselves. What you gain buy having a view of yourself from the side is an understanding of what can improve. I would put that very high on the list, right after owning a bike, a trainer and a fan. As for the entertainment, many people find that understanding the problems and fixing them is what keeps them coming back. Unlike fitness gains, the first stages of learning technique happen quickly. I know you have a camera...

Cool setup. Definitely upgrading my fan to what you mention there- thanks! Curious to know if you’re using TR plans in erg while at the same time (e.g. your power is transmitting to both apps simultaneously) riding in zwift for the scenery? Or are you riding in zwift in erg while simply seeing TR plan tick by and trying to hold the power on your own in zwift? Thanks!
@JustinDoesTriathlon
@JustinDoesTriathlon 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah more fans are always the move! And yep, you got it. TR is connected to my pedals and trainer via bluetooth, and adjusts the trainer using powermatch from the numbers reported by the pedals (so the numbers are consistent inside and outside. And then the pedals are connected via ANT to Zwift so Zwift gets the power data. Honestly, I'm always pretty meh on Zwift. I don't dislike it, I just don't care that much about it. But, it's better than staring at the wall, and I use TR for hard-ish workouts, so watching video isn't enjoyable to me either. Shrug lol. But yeah, overall I'm about as happy as can be for sitting on a hamster wheel.

Great setup. I've never connected a computer to a TV...is the one computer tower controlling both TV's? So both Zwift and TR running on the computer, and two HDMI cables going out to the TV's? Dual monitor setting somewhere in windows? And the one ANT sensor will provide data to both Zwift and TR at once? Thx!!!
@JustinDoesTriathlon
@JustinDoesTriathlon 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah you pretty much nailed it. Most graphics cards have multiple outputs. I have two cables from my computer, one to each TV. Windows automatically handles multiple displays. Then yeah, TR and Zwift together. Here is a great link from Tariq showing you how to run them together ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2evYnyDqqxpeKs ) I run both BT and ANT+. I open TR first, connect to my trainer, then open Zwift, and connect, and disconnect Controllable. TR controls the trainer, and the trainer also reports a wattage to Zwift. It sounds a bit convoluted, but once you get it set up, super easy

No video, but it's generally relatively easy. The rub sort of depends on your hardware as you need two sources of data. I connect my trainer to my computer by both bluetooth and ANT. Open Zwift first, connect your trainer, but then deselect "Controllable". Then open Trainerroad and connect. Basically Zwift thinks you've got a dumb trainer / power meter, and TR controls erg mode! It works pretty well. I then use the overlay button in tr (bottom right) to shrink it to the bottom of the screen. Another option if you have connectivity limits is to connect TR to your computer and then pair your trainer to Zwift using the companion app. There are a few ways of doing things and it depends on your setup, but you can get it going!

Pretty cool set up. I have been thinking abt some tiltable tv vs my laptop but still havent pull the plug. A bit jelous of your set up. A few questions: 1. What do you think abt the Kick Core? Thinking abt changing my Tacx Vortex to a drive one but still debating if its a “need” vs more of a want 2. How do you overlay TrainerRoad on Zwift. I havent been able to yet maybe Im missing something. Thanks!
@JustinDoesTriathlon
@JustinDoesTriathlon 3 жыл бұрын
I really like it quite a lot! I'm really hyper-supportive of anything that makes the experience better that increases the chances of you getting on the bike and doing the workout. 1) I like the Core quite a lot overall. I did have some minor problems with it relating to signal when I lived in an apt, but moving to a house has cleared it up. I was getting spotty performance when I was surrounded by all that wifi. Other than that, it’s quite good. I did a video a few months back called something like “are smart trainers worth it?” It’s a little less relevant to you though because you’ve already got a smart trainer. I haven’t owned a smart, wheel-on trainer, but I’ve got LOTS of hours in my old Kurt Kinetic. I’d say that you’ll have a better, quieter, smoother experience on the Core, but I understand your question about worth. It does seem like quite a lot of $$$ when you already have erg and such. I’d say: Do you have a power meter for outdoors? If not, I’d probably get one of those first (depending on the type of riding you do). I think, all around, a direct drive is ‘better’ than a wheel on, yes. 2) There’s a button in TR for it! Using the desktop, in a workout, bottom right of the screen, there are some arrows pointing to each other. Click it, and TR goes to the bottom of the screen and the workout text overlays in the middle of the screen. It’s an AWESOME feature and I use it all the time.

@EnriqueValenzuelaPhillips 3 жыл бұрын
@@JustinDoesTriathlon wow nice! I havent seen that button for 2. For 1. I have some Favero Assioma and love them for outdoor either on my Tri or Road bike. But yeah, since my trainer is smart, the question is more about feature, worth it on the feel and usability. The main reason Im considering a change is mainly bc I have used many tyres and it gets tiring chaning tube and tyre in a regular basis. I also had. Kurt before and loved it and then got the Vortex for the Power on it but it has been very glitchy over the last 4 years and thus why last year I pulled the plug on the power pedals and got me thinking now on a direct drive, maybe for this Black Friday :) Thanks for answering. Good to see that you not only post but also take care of your viewers

@@EnriqueValenzuelaPhillips Heck yeah! I'm always happy to nerd out about it. Yeah that's funny that your experience got worse after the Kurt. Similarly, I had a good experience on the kurt; my tires always lasted a LONG time, it was quiet, etc. Sounds like your experience on the Vortex is less positive. Since you've got the pedals, I could see a DD being a nice move up!

Apple TV no need for a dedicated expensive gaming machine. Absolutely correct per tv angle as I have mine set a bit lower than yours and also at an angle. Apple TV is hooked up by Ethernet to a powerline adapter (no wi fi). Bluetooth and wi fi use 2.4ghz though. I was running Zwift companion via wi fi whilst having headphones also connected to my iPhone on Bluetooth. Result was that Zwift companion ran badly. Switched to 5GHZ and not much difference. Not too bothered tbh as the game/training platform runs with the wired connection via Apple TV

I am, yeah. Tariq from @Smart Bike Trainers made a good video on running them together. I do it a little differently though... My computer supports both BT and ANT+, but I've had inconsistent results and I have dropouts every so often. While it's true that each program can only connect to one BT device, my trainer (Kickr Core) supports transmitting BT to multiple devices, so I leverage that. I connect both BT and ANT+ to trainerroad on my computer (as that's my priority, so I 'double up' the connectivity) and then pair the zwift companion app on my phone to my trainer, where it just reports the signal (and I turn off Trainer Control in the pairing screen.) That's the most reliable combo I've found.
