It's about finding what your management capacity is. Maybe you could sow a good cover crop where the meadow garden will be, put the chickens in there to fertilize the ground and it will be even more healthy when your ready to plant.

As a couple whether farmers or homesteaders the morning routine and briefings (time together) is so vital about getting it right. Good decision. We moved to our current location in 1989, 30 yrs ago. We’re 64 & 65 now and the way I landscaped then requires more work now than I want to do. It has become more work than joy. Should we decide to sell and move, our new place will be landscaped very differently. When you talked of your plans earlier, I could envision the beauty, but also thought of all the work and am so happy to hear you’ve decided to slow down the pace, so you don’t burn out. We planted a bee meadow last year for our bees. We were so very disappointed. We prepped and prepped and put down a lot of seeds only to have few germinate. We’ve been talking about just sowing grass seed, but may give it another go. Sometimes it’s hard to completely let go of something. By slowing down, you have time to think things through and Lord knows, designing the exterior is just like the interior. We make changes all the time. That’s our prerogative isn’t it? 😉. Thanks for another lovely video and sharing with us. 😃

At 66, I can so very relate to what you are saying. I had so many plans for our 6 acres; but then LIFE happens and so little of what I planned came to be. Now I am trying to figure out ways to par it all down; pulling out the landscaping stones and having hubby begin to mow the flower beds that have gotten away from me. Just trying to make a way so that I am not overwhelmed all the time. God bless us all as we age gracefully into 'old age homesteading!'

I'm curious, when you are planning, do you tend towards production for family needs over beauty? I'm all for beauty and happiness, but I find that my focus tends more towards needs vs wants. It drives me nuts at times, because I want peace and beauty, but I keep feeling a push from the inside to meet our needs vs my aesthetic wants. How do you approach that and prioritize these sometimes conflicting interests?

@@lavendercrowl5695 May I make gentle suggestion? Sometimes we have to see our husband through different eyes, and then again as the woman in their life. Sometimes we have to understand that we also are not perfect wives, and that each brings their own imperfections, but we love in spite and because of it. It took nearly losing my husband once, to realize the depth of the gift I had in him. It really cemented my love for him not as just a lover from those wildly emotionally charged beginnings, but as a man and friend I truly cherished...flaws and all. Just a gentle thought from my own experience. ❤

Lady, look into Permaculture if you already haven't. It works With the Natural Symbiosis found in Nature, it produces more, and is also less work after establishing certain things, because it becomes a functioning ecosystem. Each plant is supportive of the others. Some deter pests, others shade, other plants add nutrients to the soil, some block wind, others act as trellises-- the list of benefits gets lengthy. There are two different types of relationships that you see in nature: symbiotic and parasitic. Parasitic relations deplete one source of life force, by taking from it. Symbiotic relations support one another. Monoculture is a parasitic relationship not only to the environment, but to you. It's more work, less yield, and more issues because it depletes the soil of nutrients, and it destroys the natural environments which deter certain pests that tend to plague monocrops. I originally pulled back from this dream because of the sheer amount of work. I didn't want to feel enslaved to my land and do the same dang thing every year. I pretty much wanted the food with the freedom of most of my days. And then I found Permaculture. It's work at first, but it maintains itself in the long run as a forest maintains itself-- only a Permaculture forest would be centered around edible food, and plants which provide nourishment for others, and nourishment for beneficial little creatures like bees to do their jobs. It's a short term investment of time and effort for long term results which benefit us, the animals, and also the environment. It even creates an ecosystem for wildlife. Win-win-win, on every level. Thanks for sharing. I hope you all can find a way to balance everything. Awesome job at just being real with where you all are/were, and making choices in your own best interest. 💜

How long have you been on KZbin with yr homestead? Your style of intro into the videos is unique. Yr such a beautiful lady. Should be an actress. I've been following 3 or 4 other homes and found you. Have only watched about a dozen so have some catching up to do. Very nice piece of property. Still haven't figured out where u live yet but c the snow in this video and brrrr u must be in zone 5 or 6? We r in zone 5 b but surrounded by salt water so we haven't got any snow right now where we live but a storm coming 2morrow but only minus 5 C. We never got that Polar Vortex that alot of the Eastern and upper central part of the States got... thank goodness! So now that I have hit yr subscribed I will be able 2 follow u into spring planting. Sorry 4 the long comment. Kind of my intro to u. But have a quick question. Why is yr cow tagged on her ear?
