My Italian grandparents, who came to America when they were young teens, had a home in an Italian section in the city where I live and it was a piece of heaven. The whole lot with the house couldn't have been more than a 1/4 acre if that. Yet they grew all of their own organic apples, pears, peaches the size of a softball, and vegetables. He had a knack for grafting more than one variety of apple with pear in one tree. And climbing the almond tree to shake the nuts free was my favorite chore! Over the years the garden section grew, leaving a small patch of lawn. They had a pit at the back of the garden where none-meat food scraps were dumped including eggshells, garden waste, ground clamshells( that we would dig up at low tide, and a mixture of rabbit and chicken poo he got from his cousin's farm. It broke down into the blackest rich & soft loamy soil I have ever seen and it was rotated into building up the garden beds. You could dig with just your hands it was that loose! They also had a traditional grape arbor that covered a patio area that had 2 very long tables for family gatherings. Along with some of the best food I've ever had, they served home-made wine from that arbor. They also had a large basement with a "wine cellar or root cellar," where he could keep the large 50-gallon wood casks of wine and vinegar he made. He imported some grapes from his brother's farm in Italy with his. He would say in broken English, that they were a piece of home and what made his wine so good. Even the kids were served wine at dinner time in small orange juice glasses as was the way in Italy. During the grape harvest time, the whole family would get together, (they had 13 children who all went on to have their own large families) and we would go into the basement where my grandmother had a second kitchen set-up to do all of her canning and cooking for the grape harvest pressing party. Between eating, drinking, and dancing the traditional folk dance called the Tarantella, we all took part in turning the big wooden wheel on a 200 yr old grape press- adults and kids. You spoke of the cement posts that anchored the grapevines that you saw in Italy. My grandparent's grape arbor had posts made of 6" wide steel pipes filled with cement and a wood cross latch top of redwood, at about 10 ft above the tables under them. They were made with cement so they would last more than one generation. I thought I would share those memories that I cherish, with you. God Bless.

This video is cinematic. Beautifully conceived and executed. Yes there was that weird shot... but doesnt detract. The conversation of hole and planning juxatlosed with the edited scenes of plans is a perfect planning process. Loved you did this around your stove top like a crackling fire. It was so soothing and 100% there's that weird little lull... and it's perfect to plan.

I have the greatest admiration for you two. The way you think, the way you live with intention, the beauty(aesthetics) of all you do and are, your respect and appreciation for your lives, your land, your family, your home, your community. Awe inspiring.

You two are the only people I know that would fry donuts outside when it’s snowing...love it! I think I was drooling watching you and the kids eat them 😉. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and dreams for the farm. I look forward with anticipation to what you have to show and teach us in the coming year. Blessings.

Great idea to fry them outdoors! We had a family gathering this fall and fried onion rings out on the camp stove. They were SO yummy! Seemed like I couldn’t fry them fast enough, they would get scooped up and devoured as they came out of the enormous cast iron skillet. Great memories! I love how you make everything beautiful.

LOVE your videos...the music, the talks, the dreaming, the slowness of it all...beautiful. So sweet for Stew to make lattes before heading outside ☺️. YUM! So true when you said to garden just because it is beautiful... thank you for teaching me that. I have always gardened for the purpose of food. But learning to see my gardens as a place to also be creative and grow beauty. Turns those gardens into something amazing. Also.... can you share the recipe for your dough? Looks delish. 🤗🤗.

Hehe, those sweet little faces with powdered sugar. It's precious! Our plans involve a lot of work, but probably not beauty this year. We'll be starting to build a small house, and probably something for me to milk out of the rain and sleet. I still plan to plant a million nasturtium, zinnia, sunflowers, and calendula though, and tons of vegetables. Their flowers will have to be my beauty until I can design the pretty spaces.

My husband and I left the city about a year and a half ago. Sold everything we didn't think we really needed and moved to Okanogan county onto 40 acres of raw land. We are building our home and living in a travel trailer while doing it. I work from home and enjoying sneaking a video or two in, when I am bored with computer work. Your videos are great fun to watch and really show that simple yet rich life we are trying to create. Keep them coming. :)
