A great explanation but it is important to understand the extra stop of light of f1.7 in the Mini 3 Pro vs. the 2.8 in the Mavic 3, Air 2S, Mini 2 etc. means that a doubling of ND level for the same effect is necessary vs. what was common for all previous DJI drones. The filter kits from PolarPro and others offering ND4 or ND8 filters are terrible choices because of the Mini 3 that will preform like ND2 or ND4 filters which are next to useless in nearly all conditions. This is why despite being cloudy when you used the ND16 in your video (a good choice for a cloudy day on any OTHER DJI drone EXCEPT for the Mini 3) you were unable to reach 1/60 frame rates instead ending up around 1/200 which helps some but still isn't ideal. A good "3 ND filter kit" for the Mini 3 should be 32/64/128 ideally with 32 for cloudy days, 64 mixed sun, and 128 bright sun. I'm not sure what the heck is going on with DJI and even worse otherwise great companies like PolarPro which are offering their usually stellar ND products but without consideration for the differences of the camera in the Mini 3 Pro, instead using past "inertia" to offer the same old products where customers will be confused and get less than desirable results.
@StevieCoyleMusic2 жыл бұрын
So what company offers a better ND filter kit?
@imricor2250 Жыл бұрын
As a long time pro shooter I agree with your assessment of ND filtering. What all the dronies seem to leave out is that any ND filtering is fixed and a drone is a constant moving platform and so ND filtering is a constant 'moving' target in drone usage. You really have to do quite a bit of experimenting and planning on drone shots to get the look you want. Also, another thing dronies leave out is DOF (Depth of Field) and often motion blur is interpreted as DOF when it's not. Motion blur has its place but drone shots are often paused for inspection so motion blur would be a bad thing here. The lens and limited zoom on the Mini 3 pro doesn't really allow for any type of hyper DOF look unless you are very close to the subject with the background being far away. What is really needed for drones is a variable ND so we don't have to beat on the camera/gimbal so much.

Thanks for the side-by-side comparisons. I've always been in the "but why would you want to _introduce_ blur into your video?" camp, but that makes the difference more obvious seeing it like that. And the note about hyperlapses makes sense; I've got a Mini 3 coming (my first drone) and I'm definitely interested in using the larger battery to make hyperlapses.

I'm confused, if you are recording at 4k 24FPS the rule says that your speed has to be the double (+- 1/50s), but if i put a filter the speed is going to change drastically (because i have to adjust it until get a correct exposure) so if i have higher speeds (>>>1/50 for 4k 24fps) what happend with the rule? is it a minimum value the double ?
