Tyler, Your herd looks fantastic! Babies are alert, healthy and a splash of beautiful colors. You are too nice to say anything but, no one has the right to criticize you in anything, period. For those of you who read this. Please try and remember, it’s wonderful to be interactive and share your thoughts and experiences. However, please do it with kindness. A message goes a lot further to those that we talk too when we do it with gentle mouth.

We've had a number of calves with eye problems like that over the years. Generally result of infection somewhere. Two years ago we had one that was really bad off- nearly comatose- from a navel infection. She went blind for about two weeks from the infection. Eventually, with some antibiotics and care, she made a full recovery and her vision came back completely.

I watch your farming because of sentimental values,I have for my grandfather. He was old time farmer.Reused everything, or fixed anything and everything. He taught his boys to do,and farm the same.He had holes in pants, and shirts even though he had new ones.Would sit on back bed of trucks to exercise his arthritic knees. He could hardly walk when passed, his knees were so bowed.Drove tractor every where. Those were good old days, miss so much.I cry everytime I think about him,and my grandmother, parents of 10 children, only one aunt left, baby of family she is 83and has battled colon, and liver cancer.Keep farming ,farmer Tyler!!!Keep clinging to those memories.

Tyler, I for one Love sing all the different colored cows out on the grassy hill tops & enjoy watching him frolicking down the hillside. It’s a beautiful site. The only person who stuck on Angus cows are the snobs you think Angus beef is the only ones who think Angus is the only way to go. The rest of us just like good beef!! You did a fine job, catching those baby calves and tagging their ears! I think we should give a name to the bottle babies especially the three you’ve been feeding! I’m glad the baby with the eye issue is doing much bette😊❣️❣️❤️❤️

You hit the nail on the head with the Black Angus marketing. Around here (Kansas) anything not black takes a hard hit. Black baldies do better than red or anything else. Glad it's not so bad in your area. I agree with adding new genetics to your herd. I believe in hybrid vigor. We put our chicks outside at fully feathered, about 3 weeks if the weather isn't terrible or rainy. :) Your boards didn't break because you had new ones!! LOL I get the sentimental thing. Perfectly natural to remember your grandfather in those kinds of ways.

Just a thought.... make your little bummer cloudy eye calf a bottle calf and get big bag momma to raise your two aggressive/healthy bottle calves? Put both of them on her. You've convinced me that you're not afraid of hard work to keep this cow and letting her raise her last calf... let her finish out by raising two? Also, I might be missing it but what are you doing for the cows who have dead calves? Why not do the work of finding another calf for them to raise? Maybe you are and I'm just missing it? I was raised on a dairy so I always have milk production on my mind. So if a calf dies it sure seems like a waste to let the cow eat for free and not contribute her milk production to raising a calf (or two?). Sure looks like beautiful morning this time of year!! I'm super jealous!! Great job on everything Tyler👍👍

I’m a Hereford guy myself and I agree with everything you said for the most part. But, you could put a black hided pure bred Simmental and get all the benefits of heterosis as well as the black hide premium. And there is a discount for colored calves whether you like to admit it or not. Black baldies mixed in with all black are fine, but when you add the smokies and reds, buyers will Still buy, just not as much as a straight run if black and black baldy. Facts are facts. But as my mentor always said, raise what you like to look at and damn everyone else. :) cheers

A full day of work accomplished, what a sense of satisfaction. That post that has sentimental value, why not cut off the rotten part and incorporate it into your new cooking area. A holder for a bell or something else that needs strength to keep it in place. Then it will always be near. Smokey calves look so awesome in the herd. Maybe they can be next year's steers for the steer pasture.

Your conversation about black angus vs. champagne or red calves selling for different prices is so spot on…we’ve had the same exact conversation around here….but sadly it is true. Black sell for more, at least here in NW Arkansas they do…sometimes by quite a bit. My husband and I have compromised as I like a herd like yours but he wants marketable. We run a black angus bull and I still have some of my favorite (colorful) mommas. Buyer’s are really missing out because our charolais cross calves make fantastic butcher steers…can’t see the color hanging weight…anyway, it was nice hearing your common sense approach on it too. You have a great looking herd. Cull that momma (can’t remember the number) with the bag hanging to the ground and you’ll be set!

You’re getting good at communicating with your animals I am excited about tomorrow’s video when you move your new shoot and get to use it for the first time. I like the idea of the back patio with the overhang roof. It’ll be very handy for you, as you said to harvest your Ables and chickens and turkeys, etc. And it’ll be nice to have a few chairs out there to watch the sun go down at the end of the day or the opposite, have coffee with your wife before the morning stop and watch the sun come up maybe.
