Finally got our Yanmar engines!! Longreach 58 launching is close.

We have had our Yanmar engines ordered and paid for 1 year now and they finally turn up but with no controls. After much searching the world a friend of ours contacted a friend who had a contact with Yanmar International in Holland. He was Peter the owner of @Deep Water Yachts, We can not thank him enough he went to so much effort for us and got the result we were looking for. Make sure you check out his boats they are exploration trawler type boats made from aluminium, really fabulous boats.James then tells us about how he ended up in Thailand building Longreach catamarans. Thanks for bringing us along on your journey. So excited to see this come together. When I first saw the concept for Malcolm tenant CS Hall form 25 years ago, I thought it made so much sense. Great to see those ideas getting traction and implementation. I hope it's the quietest, most efficient power cruiser ever made. One technology coming down the pike that's probably not ready for prime time for this project, but hope to see you in the future. the toroidal/sharrow prop. Even lower vibration and efficiency.

We tried real hard to get them involved and made for all the longreach boats but they told us they are a couple of years away. the cost they quoted meant you would have to do about 50000 nautical miles before you started to save,

@@CruisingSunrise some other boundary-pushing tech I've wondered if you've looked into: Some composite boat builders are now using thermo-formed Corecell. All of the scoring lines on the core fill up with excess resin, especially where there are a lot of curves in shape. Some builders claim you need those to get the resin to flow, but several small builders have figured out that it isn't required and they put the core under IR lights to make it pliable. It uses a lot less resin and saves a lot of weight . For a boat going to the tropics, have you looked into Barium Sulfate based paint? Looks good. Have you thought of adding a Kite sail for long passages ? Progress has been amazing in control systems etc for these . I see they are using them on Container ships etc and saving up to 30% on fuel . Just a thought and as always there is a cost . Cheers

yes the cost versus savings, you need about 20000 nautical miles to pay for the kite plus the right wind and another thing to deal with in bad weather.

the build has draged on, yanmar have been incredibly bad . we are still waiting on parts so the boat can be finished.

Are the Yanmar engines what we would normally see in a trawler style yacht rated for continuous duty? What brand of batteries will you be using? How many kWh will the battery bank be? Very excited to see this all coming together.

Yes they are 440hp with extra house battery charging 110 / 24 volt alternators. We have Mastervolt 240/ 24 volt Lithium times 4. On the roof we have 5 kw of glass solar panels and all running 3 / 4 kw mastervolt inverters. the batteries can also be charged with our 24 volt dc whisper power generator and power cube. We have calculated 4 will be enough batteries but after using for a while we will acess , there is room for 2 more easily.

What is the estimated range with those engines, at what speed?

2500 to 2800 nautical miles at 12 knots. we will probaly cruise at 10 , 11 knots to push our range to 3500 , 3800 nautical. they are installing extra tanks now which will increase your fuel from 5600 litres to 11000 litres which wont double your range because of extra weight but will be very handy in some instances.
