Put your handles further inside the door! Move over about 4-6 inches!! You have nice long handles so it would still look nice just to the right of the latch (kind of in the arrow), left on the other door.

You could add a slight bevel to the top of that board that you just installed on each side of the barn that will be a smoother transition for tractor tires as you climb in getting rid of the 90 corner may be helpful in the long run the wood will also serve to protect the concrete edge over the years that works out nice

Al, on the livestock sliding door, you could put the handles through the cross bracing on either side of the lock. Put's it at same height as lock and no interference with the lock.

You need to get rid of the leash on the collar and buy Brutus a proper harness that you attach the leash to the back of the harness. You will find the harness works much better for training and control and won't choke Brutus when he pulls on the leash. Full chest harnesses are a lot safer and humane then hooking the leash to a collar or choke chain.

@4Classie a leash that is attach to a collar is not only a bad way to restrain a dog but they can cause damage to the dogs wind pipe or nerve damage to the neck and spinal column. A full chest halter where the leash is attached to the top of the halter is not only safer but is also easier to control the dog when you are walking them or training them to obey vocal commands. We've raised beagles for years which are known to be stubborn and strung and they live for the scent with thier nose. But we have never used a collar with a leash and only use halters that surround the chest and attach on the dogs back above thier shoulder blades. If the dog is being trained to stay or sit a slight tug on the leash will pull on the harness and they learn not to move. But with a leash attached to a collar they will pull or turn to face you ,once they figure out if they turn to face you ,you've lost all control and they soon realize this. Dogs are very smart and a leash attached to a collar or choke chain is not only ineffective but in my opinion dangerous and inhuman. There's much better things to use.

Yes, you would well to install a bottom latch on both doors,a high wind blowing through the barn can put tremendous pressure on the inside of the of the closed doors.

Al, you could put the outside handle in a horizontal position right next to the latches if you wanted to.

I usually see a roof board covering the rail on sliding doors. This keeps the ice from forming on the rail.

Gina; Long time shepherd owner here. When you groom for real, you need to put a little more force in that dog brush to get down to the undercoat. That is what needs to be maintained. The outer coat can be managed with a brush or simple comb.

The hole for the door lower latch should be drilled all the way through so it can be cleaned out. Then, run a heated rod through to make it so it doesn't swell and make it hard to get the lock in.

On the animal side put the handle horizontal. You really don't have to worry about the critters messing with the handle if you give them enough licks. If they do bother it a little chili oil on the areas you don't touch will deter them. Lose the chains and weld on slide bolts with a locking tab for the stock gates.
