A Finn here. This program is one of the reasons why Finland is also one of safest countries in the world. We don't have rampant street crime, you can walk around streets of Helsinki in the middle of the night and you're completely safe, no one will bother you. Even junkies are polite here and will hold the door for you 😃

I really do love that. I envy the ones that got to grow up that way. You will never know a hard upbringing or struggle to just NOT be targeted for absolutely no reason. 👍🏾

The US could never do this because they aren't working with a federal system that blankets the whole country. States deal with social services and in some cases, municipalities do it within the State's jurisdiction. As an American... I know the mentality there is "personal responsibility"; in spite of addiction and mental health problems. Europe has the best chance of helping their homeless because here it's people over profit.

I like the Norwegian approach because it helps to take the first steps toward ending homelessness, such as having an address. But homelessness is a symptom, not the cause. And not all causes are curable. That's probably why only 80% have been helped by this program. Homelessness is also a systemic problem, where there is little reward for politicians to actually end it. Califonia spends $42,000 per homeless person per year. Where does that money go?

US has 8 times as many parking spaces as cars!!! How many houses are empty? Speculation about houses and apartments is crazy, and has led to a global economic crisis.

In Germany, prevention is the name of the game when looking at the dilemma with homeless people. Now, we have a welfare state that subsidises people in many ways: they can get "Bürgergeld" citizen's income when jobless, plus payment of their rent plus cild allowance plus healthcare cover plus pension insurance etc. Accordingly, these people don't become homeless. The flipside: there are families without without anyone earning (!) Their bread and butter in the second or third generation. Actually, as long as these people keep up the pretence of normality they are normally well liked by their landlords since payment of their rent is affected by the housing office reliably and in full.

Social Housing is also something that you find in Austria. One does not have to live in the streets. But there are people that don't want te depend on social help. They prefer freezing over their personal pride. Everybody gets a decent amount of money here in Austria, but too many missuse it for buying just drugs and alcohol.

Getting them "off the street" usually means, banning them from the city centers. Out of sight, out of mind. But the problem still exists. So, _really_ getting them off the street and into housing is tackling the base problem first. Not too bad an idea.

As you said: The problem are deeply rooted ideological differences: The idea of basic human rights vs. the ideology of free market fundamentalism. And it's somehow sad and ironic, that the U.S. - despite having been the ones, who started that whole human rights thing, have so radically turned against it (unless it isn't about shooting each other), be it healthcare, education or housing. Also: In free market fundamentalism as a highly hierarchic and competitive ideology, homelessness is paradoxically not a sign for system failure, but for the system working as intended, for the homeless give the working poor someone to look down to and something to fear, so they give in to exploitation. Why try to fix desperation and suffering, when you can utilize it?

The reason for rising homelessness is pretty simple. Rising cost of living and stagnant wages are the main drivers. As always the greed of a few dictate the well being of the many.

The US would have to overcome the thought of this idea as being utterly socialist. And i know for certain that the German system sucks hairy butt. Hard! Again, bureaucracy, our Nemesis.

@@ChristopherLRussellThat would be difficult for me to explain in detail. And YT has a limit for comments i believe.^^ Let's just start with the fact that there aren't enough social workers and many services for homeless are provided through (unpaid) volunteers (Ehrenamtliche Mitarbeiter). Bureaucratic hurdles are too high and doing the first step and apply for the welfare programme is often regarded as not advantageous or even not achievable. It's just, imagine you already got it hard and they look down on you and make it even harder.

In Germany if you don´t want something to happen you don´t simply make it illegal but put as much bureaucracy onto it as possible.
