Sooo...I've been avoiding this question for awhile, because I've been having a hard time deciding what I want to do and how to talk about it. Balancing my ambitions with having a family has always been a struggle for me and I've finally decided what I want to do. Get ready with me (GRWM) while I chat about my medical school dreams, thoughts on moving to the US and whether I would settle for another career.

Vlogging with an active baby in your lap without losing your train of thought WHILE also applying makeup takes some serious chops.

Lexa, my grandma used to say to me, "Just keep living". The scriptures (Ecclesiastes) say,"Time and and unforseen occurances befall us all". Take each day one at a time. You really don't know what each day will bring. Live to serve the One True God. Be obedient to His laws, rules and commands, and you'll find out what the future holds for you and your family. Thanks for sharing. 😊

You are making 100 the right choice. I know women that didn’t have choice but to grind for career with small kids. They are happy where they are but they’re kids had issues. You can’t get this time back. On the flip though my cousin was told by professors not to pursue even grad school. At that point she had two small kids. She didn’t listen to him and she’s now tenured professor at two of most prestigious universities in US. She also didn’t have the support of a partner. Her kids turned out great ( though it was a difficult winding road for eldest)but she now has a 2 yr old and is able to be attentive and present in ways she wasn’t with older two. She had tone super strict and run a very tight ship. I’m pretty sure her parenting style at that time to your kids would traumatize them. You’re setting emotional foundation for the rest of their lives. There’s nothing more helpful to the world than that. Signed someone from a country of emotionally problematic people regularly shooting schools and public places up.

I get and understand everything your are saying.. You are right, kids are only babies once. So take a few gap years. Enjoy being a mom and wife.. I myself was able to stay at home with my kids untill they were all in school. Then went back to working full time. I don't feel like I missed anything in life I wanted to do. It was about the time and place in life, as to what I need to do to be happy.

As a mom, i would advise you not to leave your young children especially the baby. Bond with them and spend quality time with them . You will never regret that choice. You will be still young and beautiful. The children are already here so both you and husband should just focus on staying in love, work hard to help your children grow up healthy and happy and educated, at least an age where you are comfortable that they will be ok when you go back to school. You have to execute a plan on how you are going leave them. You already created a fun loving environment in your home so to move forward to get your education when you are ready, would be easy plus rewarding. Your children will grow fast and you will have plenty of time to go back to school and be a doctor. That is your calling. Dont ask God to take it away. You need your own education to feel that you accomplish your calling and you will be a great Doctor. Your children and husband will be proud of your dedication and sacrifices and you will feel much better that you put them first. Dont miss out on the best part of your children's life. They need you and their dad to teach them how to be the man and women of tomorrow. Too many people regret not spending the time with their children in their early years and the children grow up to tell the tale of how they were neglecte by their parents because of work etc I hope my advice as a mom help you in some way.

I miss pursuing a career I know that I would love, but I also know that if I became a doctor today and couldn't raise my kids the way I want to then I would be miserable. How you and other single mothers do it is beyond me. And of six kids at that, you are amazing! Your kids will not forget your hustle and love. I one hundred percent agree with you as an African-American woman and a person who wanted to be a registered nurse I tried to work and go to school and take care of my mother and my two younger siblings who were still at home and then two more years ago children because my sister got on drugs it was so hard to settlement for less professionally and then I end up getting a occupation that was so physically demanding that by the time I was in my 40s my body begin to break down physically and now I’m older and stuck with one income that is not even enough to take care of myself. I find myself crying a lot because had I been able to finish my degree as a registered nurse I would be able to still be working making great money and to financially support myself. So so yes I do understand your plight. Our struggle is real.!✊✊✊

Alexa (I hope I am using your name correctly.) you don’t have to explain yourself or your process to your subscribers. However, I must say I like what I’m hearing. I told you not your time God’s time. When you are ready everything will fall into place. Perhaps America will establish universal healthcare at that time. Maybe some other opportunities will open up for you and Ryan that will make your medical school dream fall into place. Don’t let anyone define how your career should manifest. I have a law degree, and was teaching close to 20 years. I didn’t pass the bar exam and wore that failure like a ball and chain. I was depressed when my teaching career was no longer fulfilling me. However, at the ripe old age of 55 I have found new purpose. I am thinking of taking another stab at the bar exam. I tell you this to say that if you believe in God and ultimately yourself there is nothing you can’t accomplish. I want to thank you again because your positivity and crazy sense of humor was one of the things that inspired me to look at myself and my aspirations differently. You encouraged me, and I want to encourage you. It is never too late to achieve your goals. Where there is God there is always hope. I am praying for you Alexa. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

It's tough, but it can be done. They say sleep when your baby sleeps, but when you're in school and have a baby, you don't sleep. Surround yourself with people you can trust, allow yourself to relinquish some of the things you normally like to get done yourself (like cooking or grocery shopping etc.) The fact that you are talking about it with your husband now is a good sign. Congrats by the way.

Alex thanks for sharing this with us. I understand exactly where you are and I feel you're making the right decision. I too was in school, a single mother with a young daughter. She's always been a good girl, never giving me any problems. But suddenly she started acting out a school. I couldn't figure out what was going on because there were no problems at home. I felt at the time and at her age that she just needed my attention. As important as school was to me, what she was going through was even more important. So I put school on hold (it was a hard decision gurl) because we don't want society shaping our children. She needed me. I got her back on track (emotional stability) and she never had any more trouble. I waited a few years and went back to school and because she was more independent, I was able to focus on my studies and breezed through graduate school. You are right we can have it all. We just can't have it all at the same time. So we keep those goals close to our heart as we learn to put first things first. Some people can sprint to the finish line. Some can walk-jog. Then there are those who have to take it one step at a time. And that's ok. Just remember that the race isn't given to the swift, neither the battle to the strong. But to the one that endures to the end. Many blessings to you and your beautiful family. 💕 P.S. Jordan looks just like her "Diddy"!😋

I understand your position 100p%. I'm supposed to be taking my architectural exams. One test cost about $300-$500. There are about nine sections. Their rules have changed. They might have less sections now. However, the major problem with their new rule is you have about five years to complete EVERYTHING. If for instance, you pass, let's say eight sections. You're having a difficult time passing the last section and that five years time frame come. Guess what? You have to start ALL OVER AGAIN. Remind you, those tests are not CHEAP. To keep myself SANE, I decided NOT to even start taking ANY. I'm trying to guide/raise my boys. When the time is right and if I FEEL like taking those tests, I'll do it. When I was YOUNGER. before having kids, I think I was focused on TITLE. A.K.A being an "architect". It's nice and all. BUT, as I get older and WISER, its NOT that important. I find myself being more simple. "LESS IS MORE" motto. I've encountered many successful ppl. What I originally thought of them is NOT. I DON'T know what my future hold in the architectural field or I would regret my decision. For now, I am thankful to God my family is healthy and I'm raising my kids; NOT a nanny. I discussed part of this on "maparis" my other channel. By the way, I'm in the states. I completely understand the healthcare situation that you are talking about. Keep your head high. Do whatever you feel you can do. Leave the rest to God. Keep your family TOGETHER ❤. ENJOY your FAMILY. These little rascals grow so darn fast. Enjoy their hugs and kisses and all the little fun things that they do before they they start thinking they're too old to give them. Lol

I hate when they change the rules like that! Yeah, as you get older you start to think about the type of life you want vs success as defined by society. You'll write the test when and if you feel it is right. Enjoy your life too. Also, thanks for sharing!

Listen closely...sistah you can do whatever you want, whenever you decide to make the choice. Your Family comes 1st! You have achieved so much already, the rest will just be completion. Can you really imagine having some other people raising your children in daycare and after school care? The money most people spend on that, they wish they could save and do it themselves. Since you are currently in the position where you can be there for your children’s 1st everything, then don’t trip. Don’t feel like you have to explain nothing to anyone. Keep loving on your family, those kids are beautiful and love on that Man of yours. Nothing is worth more, than their love. Take your time Lexa! The medical field isn’t going anywhere. As long as we live, the world will need physicians.

I know this is an older post, but I’m in a similar situation. I’m a single mom and I’m 10 classes away from my degree, then 3 years out for PT. My son is 4 and is my baby! He needs me and the strict nature of my house during the seminar is hard. I work full time and there’s just not enough hours in the day to do EVERYTHING well. I want my home to be successful before all else. The sacrifice is real but I KNOW once I achieve it all it’ll change our financial future and open up opportunities. I like how you thought this all through.

I hear you when you say there aren't enough hours in a day to do everything well. I had a really hard time accepting that. Just remember that if you want it to be, your sacrifice can be temporary. In the meantime, don't forget to take care of yourself. I'm going to be posting more videos about this (I'm literally editing one right now). I think you'll enjoy it. Stick around and we can coach each other through this period in our lives. We've got a great community on this channel. We laugh and cry together lol, no judgement. Glad you found my video by the way and thank you for sharing your experience with me.

Lexa Karlyn that’s the hard part, I can’t seem to take care of myself. Showers became a luxury 😵 lol oy. Being a mom is all consuming, definitely not for the faint of heart! I totally dig the nonjudgmental space here. I’ve been a quiet watcher on your channel, I LOVE your family. ( I came across your videos when Ryan tried to braid Madison’s hair lmbo). I’m excited to see what’s next for you all!

Hey girl, hello from the UK London, it is your life and you only get one. So live it how you want, never feel you have to please anyone but you. Also how are you doing your make up so good with Jordan on your lap, I just about manage mine with 2 free hands. Please do more videos like this I really enjoyed it. I'm 31 and not settled down I constantly feel pressured to start thinking about settling down and asked when I am going to have children. I want to be able to enjoy my babies once they are here. I feel old but at the same time I don't want to give up my career just yet. Part of me wishes I did things the other way round. I ended up writing a story sorry🙆🏾x

Have you considered master's entry nurse practitioner programs? I know we have those in the states. You don't have to go back to do a second bachelor's and they're a lot shorter than med school. There's also physician assistant programs that are only 2 years.
@LexaKarlynVlogs
@LexaKarlynVlogs 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestions. In Canada NP requirements are bachelors in nursing plus a master's in nursing. NPs don't have the same scope of practice as physicians. Physician assistants aren't regulated in Canada and don't have the same autonomy that I'm looking for. My issue isn't getting to medical school in the US, nor is it the length of training...so applying for another program isn't the answer in my case. 😉

PAs are not registered in Canada, don't make a good living and don't have the autonomy that I would like. Ryan has two undergraduate degrees, one in nursing and another in kinesiology with a minor in psych. I have a BSc (Medical Science and Psychology Honors double major) and a MSc in Medical Science with a specialization in neuroscience. My thesis was in molecular biology (genetics). I'm currently a clinical researcher at a hospital and Ryan is a community mental health nurse.
