I agree Ryan, more racist people need to be exposed, stop being silent and making excuses for it. I also believe that it will become more common amongst different races which is a step in the right direction. Great video!

Hi Ruth, I'm glad that you appreciate that Ryan is supportive of me; however, I wanted to clarify something. Ryan is supporting the black community -- as he should. I don't think that white husbands of black women should get an extra pat on the back every time they stand up against racism.

That conversation, the one you have to have with your kids...it's NEVER soon enough. My autistic son was 12. I didn't think it was time. (He was in his own world.) But then "he fit the description" and I was scared if I'd been one minute later the cop would have taken my child away. My daughter was two and there was no way to explain to a two year what race was. My baby girl was asked why she was Black by another child while we were at the doctor. (Even I didn't know how to answer that one!) My daughter, age 2, pointed to us, her parents. And with that she answered for all of us. We were born and that should be enough.

I was 11 years old when I first experienced racism. I grew up in Queens, NYC in the late 70’s when Black people were buying homes in that neighborhood for the first time, going to the store for my mother. A white boy who looked 17 years old threw a bottle at me. I remember looking at his face while he stood across the street looking defiantly at me. I remember his face to this day. The hatred was so confusing to me. My 11 year old self didn’t understand it, and my Jamaican mother didn’t explain it to me. It is when I went to college and started to take Black history classes that I really started to put the pieces together. People black, white, and others need to educate themselves on the history of race relations in the world. It grieves me that today in 2020 that we still have to explain why Black Lives Matter. I would ask Alexis and Ryan how will you approach discussions of race with their children?
@nocturnalhaven6545
@nocturnalhaven6545 4 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry you experienced something so terrible, I'm black myself and I know the racism of back then was really something else, as it still is unfortunately.Happy you've been continuing to educate yourself though and yes, it's sad what the current reality is in 2020, all the best!

Thanks for this❤❤. I am from Kenya. Born and bred solely in a black community. And yes I view racism differently from my brothers and sisters born and brought up in white dominant cultures. I got to leave my continent when I was 24yrs old. My dad was very adamant that we shall not leave the country before we were 21yrs old . He told us that we need all the emotional support in our formative years. Now I get him. He warned me that we shall be treated differently because of our skin colour out there (outside Africa). As an African from Africa by 24 yrs old I was confident in my skin. I associate blackness with exellence, goodness, and greatness. So when I travel out .....a racist view or look would not break me. BUT yes we too face it. Nobody asks if you are from Africa, we all (black people)face the same crap. I just noted, it lands different for those who did not have to face it in formative years of their lives.

This isn't an issue in most interracial relationships. We don't look at our partner and think "what a nice white/black person". That's just our best friend. If anything when this stuff happens it draws us closer to one another. If race is an issue in your relationship, it was there from the jump, not because of what's going on in society.

So happy you spoke about this topic. It's important to have these discussions. Thank you.👏🏾 I've always wanted to sit & discuss the dynamic of black Africans and N. American blacks. I'm African American and I've previously had MANY online discussions w/black Africans who would gaslight convo about race. Saying things like blacks in US make everything about race. US blacks don't succeed because they blame everything about race. US black's make race a big deal, when not everything is about race that's why African blacks don't like American blacks. And after so many convo's like this, I won't lie it made me begin to not like black Africans because it hurt to live and deal with racism here in the states & constantly suppressing the pain but to have fight your own people & being made to believe your experience was invalid. It just became too much. So to see some black Africans finally acknowledge our suffering is real is just as important as White people FINALLY acknowledging systemic racism is REAL! (in my opinion)

I appreciate you speaking out on your channel. A lot of people, including Canadians, don’t believe that racism exist in Canada. The headquarters for the KKK in Canada is in Ontario. Canadians are very passive. And passive aggressive. The reason why these things exist and people feel comfortable to sit on the fence is because the conversation is not right up, and when it is, the speaker is told that it’s not appropriate. But neither is racism. Thank you for using your platform. And to Ryan: I 2-Virgil percent agree with you in regards to not allow others to feel comfortable in their warped sense of self superiority. God bless you guys and your family 😘 “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing” Edmund Burke.

Hi, Just watched this video, and I'm good with what you had to say.just want to let you know that I subscribed to your channel to support you, and most of the channel's are interracial couple the interactions between is different. I, didn't do it just because I use to be in a mixed relationship, and in my family there are mixed race children with BLACK being the bases of pur family. When I started dating it wasn't an issue with me being with someone white,that Bridge had already been crossed, by my brothers I guess what I'm getting at is love who you want, and remember one picked and the other chose. There will always be challenges, and assholes to come along to try and put something in the way, you are each other's foundation and the house built on a solid foundation can with stand against any storm that tries to bring it down. You’re soo right about Nigerians coming from Africa to the U.S. there’s been studies that have shown that black women experience birth problems/premature births because of the racism that’s been ingrained in them since childhood. First generation African Americans don’t experience this as much as their children will because they haven’t experienced it as much in their lifetime😭

I appreciate how you expressed yourself and how you spoke about things. It was nice to here someone explain things without attacking .. it is hard to hear someone speak about racism towards them when they are bashing another race in the same breath. I like to listen to everyone's experiences and lives, but like I said it is hard to listen to someone speak about things than bash another race. I am not ignorant to racism though, maybe I am wrong, I here it is worse in the south than it is here in the west. I want to hear you i want to understand.. I have many ethnicities in me. I have never treated anyone different for any reason and my children at school, which are half Mexican than half everything else I am lol, will speak up and protect any kid that is being treated wrong as well as I will with anyone. I dont want to make this about me, i am sorry, it just hurts me that I do stand up for people always have, never for myself though, and it hurts that I get attacked or I get people calling my job saying I am being racist. I work landscaping and they are Latinos I am the only female . Luckily everyone knows me and was like what were they talking about tiana is never. plus my kids are latino .. I am a single mom and could have lost my job if they didn't know the person I am.. than to go on here to watch some videos before bed and here all white people are this and all white people are that. I have been abused by the system and have been threatened etc .. so it is hard to hear If u have white skin u r privileged and have multi generational wealth. I am like I came from a poor abusive, of every kind, household I have been in the system at a young age as well I got kicked out at 13 years old and became homeless. when me and my children were homeless for years in motels i dragged myself out of that and finally got us a place it is so expensive and hard to get anything here in cali I have also experienced how awful police can be and whenever I am near one I panick and people tell me if you did nothing wrong why are you worried I say because I know what they can do and it is their word against mine, I don't speak up I just take it. Sorry I am sure you didn't want to hear me ramble about my life story and make it about me I just wanted to Express myself and seeing how you spoke I though maybe I could speak a little of my world as well. I dont want Pitty or poor me or nothing like that I just really wanted to get out a bit of my world and experiences .. bless you and your family .. you are beautiful and I am sorry for people being so damn ignorant and just so damn stupid. I really do wish I could take that pain from people so they wouldn't have it.. it hurts my heart that's why I dont watch mainstream media my heart just hurts for people.. people can be so cruel and so horrible and I really wish it would stop.. I dont want to divide I want us all to just live and let live.. sorry again about my book I just wrote here I hope you don't mind if you do let me know and I will delete it .. bless you and ur loved ones..

Glad you’re interested in having this conversation 😉. I hear that you’ve had a difficult life and don’t feel heard. If I understand correctly, when people say that you are privileged, you hear “you have generational wealth”. White privilege does not mean that you don’t have hardships. It doesn’t mean that you haven’t had to work hard for everything you have. It does not mean that you’ve never been abused or abandoned. It does not mean that you are rich. White privilege means that your hardships are not because of the systematic oppression of the way you look. Now, does that mean you are the enemy? No. It means you can use your privilege to bring awareness to other people who look like you that racism is real and that black people face systemic inequality because of our skin colour. So when you hear it’s not enough to be non-racist, we are saying that more people need to be anti-racist and stand up for the belief that we should all be treated equal. I hope this clarifies what white privilege means. Please don’t delete your comment. Your feelings are valid and I’m sure many feel as you do. It’s important that we have these conversations and that others know we are able to have them, so that we can actually make a change.

Ahh, you are an inspiring couple in your discussion of a painful situation that I know affects you both differently. Lexa, I don't like watermelon either - ditto on papaya. I think that we are all programmed in a socially constructed society in which what can be considered as "whiteness" is considered "Normal" and everything outside of this "normal" is "other". I have been fighting to deprogram myself for by learning more about humans around the world - different cultures and human history across time, This has helped me to put into perspective the "NATURE" of humanity and to understand that racism is a symptom of a larger human illness that pervades all human societies.There is always a created social "normal" and then created boxes of "others". I feel that the movement that we have seen in the last few weeks is more to do with people tapping into the wrongness about human nature - its more than racism - its the fight for humanity's conscience (or the elevation of human consciousness). I am glad Ryan spoke up about white people. For too long in the socially constructed "normal" many people have been able to take refuge away from disturbing issues such as racism. It is clear that there needs to be an expansive therapeutic treatment delivered to not only reveal but heal the psyche of everyone in this constructed "normal." People often discuss and view "racism" as something that affects its victims but not enough focus has been put on the perpetuating society that continues to not only benefit from but keep this disturbing reality going. I see this similarity in rape culture in which the focus is not on the actual perpetuators but the victims. In rape culture you see the perpetuator being demonize when rape is a common society evil that is carried out across social, racial and economic lines. Yet, the perpetuator is not seen as common but is thought of as "singular". I see the same thing with perpetuators who are identified as "racists". They are thought to be "singular" when it is clear in a system it is a common occurrence. Additionally, the pressure seems to be for those who are victims (of rape or racist culture) to change, to survive, to overcome, to do all of the work to fix a reality they have been disempowered in. In truth in order to really change these cultures, the perpetuators must be addressed and the main pressure of change should be on them. I know this is a lot - but as I said, you inspired me....

As a white male married to a woman of color with a child of color I believe two things now: 1) Listen, not just in one ear and out the other, but ACTIVE listening. In a previous video you had mentioned that Ryan had been asked many times to take pictures of people going by and you had not. There is a difference of experience and perception that needs to be bridged and it doesn't disappear instantly. Learn before you act. 2) Ryan is correct. Let other white people know that just because they are surrounded by other white people does not mean that other whites are in on the racist fraternity. I would add from my viewpoint that I would like to see less philosophy and more action like a FEDERAL standard for use of force. Many do not realize that as one goes from one community to another the language can often be subtly different, different enough to make a difference between like and death. Finally, for other white people, take some time to be introspective and examine your behavior. I have found from my daughter that the way I may perceive an event may be entirely different from a person of color who may have more to fear from police. If nothing else, we need more discussions such as those you have had on your channel for a long time. Thanks.

Hi Lexa and Ryan, I grew up in rural NC and I had a similar experience to your mom, Lexa. I knew white people existed (we had 2 or 3 in my classes and every now and then a white teacher), but they were not predominant in my childhood. I do think that this had a very strong effect on my self value and self worth. However, I was exposed to colorism by a black peer. He was light skinned, and he used to call me an "African booty scratcher." I didn't think that deep into it because I was in elementary school. Now, thinking back on it I don't know if he was referring to it because my mom grew up in Liberia or because I was brown. But I knew even then that it was spoken from a place of self-hate since he was black and our ancestors were from Africa. I remember being more offended about the "booty scratcher" bit than the "African," but I'm sure he meant to demean by saying African, too. (It also helped that my mom made sure I didn't think of African countries in a hateful way.) This memory came up as I was trying to remember my first racist encounter. Thanks for being so open and encouraging!

My background: I’m a white guy married to a black woman for 35 years. We have a black daughter (by her previous marriage) and a biracial daughter (both adults). I teach Navy JROTC in an unusually diverse inner-city midwestern U. S. high school. Racism, or colorism has existed for many centuries. Example: India and its caste system. Slavery has existed since the beginning of humankind. Read about the existence of slavery in the Bible. Tribalism has existed for thousands of years, and has an ugly history. Native American tribes in both North and South America were not happy hunter-gatherers before the arrival of the white man. They made horrible wars against one another, practiced human sacrifice, tortured and slaughtered their enemies, and were sometimes cannibalistic. Recent tribalism: the Hutu genocide (and it really was genocide) against the Tutsis in Rwanda. Both black tribes, of course. No “racism” there. (Good movie: Hotel Rwanda. Good book: Out of America, by Keith B. Richburg.) Want more ugliness? The never-ending sectarian carnage between Sunni and Shiite Muslims. The horror that tribalism has wreaked in Somalia. I could go on and on. What this all means is that humanity contains elements of good and horror. As simplistic as this seems to be, we need to have some thick skin. WHEN I MARRIED MY BLACK WIFE, RELATIVES IN MY OWN FAMILY DISOWNED ME. (I lost maybe 10 seconds of sleep over that!) My outlook on life has become pretty simple: Philippians 2:3-4. Finally, food for thought. Going through all this will take a long time, but you and your followers should do it. There are differing points of view you will never see or hear in the mainstream media. As you watch these, THEY ARE NOT PRESENTED TO DENY THE DISCRIMINATION YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED. DISCRIMINATION EXISTS. NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD DENY THAT. One doesn’t have to agree with them, but at least know they’re out there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJi4m3aBZ8-AppI and ( This is long; watch it all, but you could skip to time 23:00 kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3fUh4GGrNh_hNE ) Also kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6Lampluhatke6s Finally, this piece about what many feel is our NUMBER ONE PROBLEM that seems to be found as part of so many other problems: kzbin.info/www/bejne/maa3XppvltKZhtk Sorry this was so long.

Your statement was ok until you started talking about tribalism,genocides etc happening in some countries.By saying this what are you trying to imply?First of all :What happened in Rwanda was caused by other non african countries who wanted to get things from Rwanda.Make your research i won’t mention those countries.The war in most african countries is usually spurred by the west because it profits them.400 years of slavery,brutality,erasing your identity is not 4 days nor 40 years.It leave traces,trauma.The media will never give out the real reasons of war or conflicts in countries.But we who leave there are experiencing the real things.Racism is an institutional system.When white People come to Africa they are safe and are welcomed but we africans in Europe or Usa we aren’t safe or welcomed as much.I hate when someone brings up tribalism,etc as a way to try to excuse this institutionalized racism.

I can relate to this. I'm a white guy. My wife is black. When my father found out about the woman I married (9 years ago now and also while I was away in the Navy), he stopped talking to me. It hurt a little bit at first, but it really showed me my father's true colors. I can count the number of times on one hand that I've seen him in those 9 years. My mother on the other hand was completely understanding and unconditional loving and happiness for the both of us.

@@lalamichele6182 Predictable reply: blame the white man. Of course European empires exploited Africa; I didn't intend to write a history text here. Tribalism predates the arrival of whites. Another example: New Guinea. Basically, all I was trying to say is that the world's really not a pretty place and never has been. We all have to play the hand we're dealt. Stop trying to find racism under every leaf you turn over, stop being offended by the new sensitivity, "micro aggressions," and get on with bettering yourself. A quote for you; the source is anonymous: "You either get bitter or you get better. It's that simple. You either take what has been dealt to you and allow it to make you a better person, or you allow it to tear you down. The choice does not belong to fate, it belongs to you."

Scott Smith I am not surprised by your paternalist respond.Always telling others how they have to deal with things.What gives you that right??Your respond is exactly one from a white person.Who doesn’t understand or know the reality.Who thinks he knows better and should give his opinion.The moment someone puts forward tribalism I know that is someone who clearly doesn’t understand the situation at hand.Tribalism is not an institutionalized system but racism is.I can’t blame you because you will never really understand what it is like been a black person in a predominantly white environment.And that even been married to a black person or having mixed kids there will always be a discripancy especially if you keep thinking like a white person (that you are).

I was born in 1958. I was lucky because my parents were not racists. We (11 kids altogether) never used the n word. My Parents had friends in every color, from every walk of life. We experienced racism. My Father was of Spaniard decent, my Mother European. We had darker skin, dark eyes. We lived in a white neighborhood. The racism was not near what a black person experiences. I have seen black people experience racism. It's not fair, it's not right. I hate it! I can only think that I am not racist because of my Parents or because I am a God Loving person. But I also believe that God meant for the races to mix. I have in my life only seen beautiful mixed race children. All children are beautiful!! At the end of the day, we are all humans. Love your Brother, love your Sister. BLACK LIVES MATTER!! STOP THE HATRED!
