Hi Ann.. I thought we needed to spray the chow to make it a bit moist? This time of year I don't mind wetting the chow. But come close to a harvest or the bin is wet already, I can't add more water so they don't get any chow . lol I like that you didn't add water , just fluff it in . The tower was the first thing I used when I started. Direction said Worms go up to eat . Mine didn't.. I was getting so pissed off they were going down and drowning. That's exactly what I did to the bottom tray to. First I measured & cut cardboard for the bottom. Then lined it with brown paper. Just in case they decided to wiggly down by the edge of the walls and cardboard 😂😂 I snapped 3 of my grandson's Big Lego bricks together for each corner to support the tray above. The worms LOVED playing in the bricks lol It also kept each tray up a tiny bit to allow air circulation on each level. What I don't get it tho... We feed the exact same food in a bin and a tower. Why is there so much liquid at the bottom of the tower, Never any on the bottom of a bin 🤔🤔 cheers

The top tray was damp enough for the microbes and worms to get to the chow. I had sprayed down the chow before and it sat on the top and molded into a brick. Ever since then I just scruff it in and it seems to work fine. I agree worms do not follow the directions. We have to adjust to make it work in our own situation. 🪱👍🏼😀

I started collecting what I need to start my first worm bin. I have a lot of it already, because of the reptiles I keep. I'm debating whether I should spend the money on a paper shredder, or just a cardboard cutter and soak the cardboard to make tearing it into smaller pieces easier. I bought a 7 gal tote from Home depot and drilled ventilation holes at the top of the sides, just in case I have to keep the lid on for emergencies. Otherwise I plan to leave the lid off, so the worms have better ventilation and the light keeps them where they belong. I have some food scraps to add to the bedding so the worms will be happier when I add them.

I love having my shredder but it is not necessary. I have large bins with lots of worms. You can save the cash until your wormery gets bigger. Feel free to ask questions anytime. Ps if you do go for the shredder my Amazon link is in the video description. 😁👍🏼🪱

we must have spring tails in our blue bin..... very distratcting to say the least. Your 360 is looking goodl, and you seem to be a pro at sifting those castings. Have a great day.

I don't know why but I find them more creepy than other bin critters. 😀👍🏼🪱

Put a whole pineapple top in one of my 50 gal grow bag bins in mid Nov, just now is it almost gone. Have a pumpkin stem I put in at the same time and it looks almost new. Springtails feed on everything good in a worm bin. They need a lot of moisture as they very easily dry out. Different species thrive at different temps, some even can be seen jumping on top of the snow, people refer to them as snow fleas. Cool, unfinished basements are an ideal environment, even without a worm bin. Had a thought on your tower system. Why not water the shredded paper or cardboard with some worm casting extract? Besides moistening the paper, would add a bunch of biology to help break it down for the worms, probably not necessary. I was going to harvest one of my 50 gal grow bag bins last week, decided to wait until spring, will just keep adding shredded leaves and food until I need the castings. Tower system looks great! Enjoy your videos! Stay Well!!!!

I usually make prepared bedding for the worms. I decided to follow Patrick and use dry so the sump doesn't get full. I may need to do prepared bedding in the winter and dry in the spring. 🪱👍🏼😀

I figured that you would simply screen the castings to get the paper shreds out... I was surprised when you aborted the harvest & restored things to allow it to continue :)

Very nice Ann! Sometimes the plans don’t work out the way we want. Good job just going with the flow. Wow 6 levels. 😮 what’s about your next checkin time frame, 14-21 days?

About every 3 weeks. I'll likely go back to 5 until summer. Not enough veggies to go around this time of year.🪱😁👍🏼

I'm a little confused on how this system works. The worms are supposed to migrate out of the tray that is about to be harvested, right? So do you harvest the tray at the top (meaning that the worms gradually migrate down) or the tray at the bottom (meaning they migrate up)?
@PlantObsessed9 ай бұрын
They migrate down. I know some trays are supposed to go up. This is the way that has worked for me. 👍🏼🪱😃

I don't think packing paper underneath is a good idea. Will majorly restrict airflow i would think.
@PlantObsessed11 ай бұрын
Fair point. I'll see what it looks like in a month. Maybe the spring tails will eat it.🪱👍🏼😀

Can I feed my worms molded chicken crumble dust that has some quail poop in it? I poured the dust into a bag where it began to mold.
@PlantObsessed11 ай бұрын
I would do it only a little at a time as it may heat up. The worms will love it. 😀🪱👍🏼
