I have wasted years of my life without this setup... it is so simple compared to the nonsense I used to run.
It's centered around a few key pieces... the main monitor. It's an ultra-wide, but not 21:9. It's 21:10 for those extra productivity pixels. Why not go 4k? Well if you look at my video on 4k monitors, you'll understand the issues there.

With this Alienware/Dell AW3821DW, I get 3840x1600 pixels AND I don't have to scale anything... so I get to use all the real estate. When running smaller 4k monitors, I end up with less usable space because I have to run 125% scaling at a minimum. So, this is the sweet spot and the extra pixels over a normal 21:9 monitor are awesome to have.

Now I have what I always dreamed about for a gaming setup. I have all the TES and Fallout games, heavily-modded, and running buttery smooth. I love my 20:10 monitor. So glad I bought it and I hope it lasts forever. I also be love that 2560x1600 series of Dell monitors. So nice for doing work. I have the same config with 2 of my monitors and unfortunately it just takes up too much space and makes me strain my neck if I am using it a lot. It also is hard to find a mount that can handle the weight. So I might downside to a smaller unit. I think the better config for those 30xx series monitors is just 2 side by side, but then it's not ideal for gaming.

more screen real estate is huge - big productivity bonus - 3 27 is probably ideal but whatever - the virt workspaces in debian xfce4 are good - you can have a lot going on with 1 machine - the bare metal and all the vms - sbc and arm are bringing more to lan vms - cando nas and opnsense and webserver/cluster node - it has 2.5 and nvme - you are going to have to goto next platform for full bore cluster node that has gpu for compute and supports 100g - smb is going to 100gbe in 2023 - build a 3 node cluster and add a pi-kvm with hdmi switch for lites out to all nodes - use 3050 optiplex and 6/7th gen or use z440v2 for a beefier cluster - memsql - 135w later you get 3 nodes and fast netfs, mysql cluster, upgrade is probably a second cluster on 3 more machines - alt you may want to just make sure you have 2 nas and grsync between them, alt2 you could build new pc but add proxmox and boot to baremetal on one monitor and then different os in other 3 monitors (those are qemu vms with pci passthrough here and there) - the goal is you want zero data loss and having copies of data on another machine is useful, you can also just clone machines #live migration to egress exhibit

After using a 1:1 format 1440*1440 Smartphone from release until it became obsolete, And then super long 2400*1080 phones, I can say 1:1 format is wonderful In that it's never perfect (except for web browsing, text documents and mail), but never terrible. Why do I mention that? Because I'm convinced that the ideal monitor format if you like a wide workspace is 2:1, plain an simple. If your setup is wider than 2:1 you are just wasting vertical space. Need a second screen for the game guide since it's old and you can't alt+tab without crashing it? You likely have an almost 7" smartphone right there on your table. Adjust font size and get a stand.

Do you have any ergo issues? I have a RSI induced shoulder and neck problem, so I have to focus a lot on keyboard/table height, monitor height, and centering the display. For that reason I don't mess around with extra monitors anymore, just look straight ahead.

The crazy thing about all of this and his setup in general is that depending on where he lives and his landlord, they might enter his home and immediately condemned and the DHS might call and claim he's a hoarder!... Projectors are amazing I think that is the best way to game and or watch movies!! Not all PC games are great for that setup but for retro console games I find it amazing. I haven't decided yet... I think I'd prefer the tray because I like to keep my seat unreasonably low... but I eventually want a wider tray. As for metal, my tastes are mostly folky, artsy, theatrical, and sometimes a little gothy, (Havukruunu, Nechochwen, Tribulation, etc.) or just really heavy black or viking metal. I'll give it a listen... so long as it's wild I'll probably like it.

I'm starting to think I'm just being nostalgic at this point though and the second I pull the trigger on a tray, I'm going to just want to go right back to playing on the desk again. I never used to be so indecisive on these things. Well Revocation is more of a Death metal band with some thrash, tech death and jazzy parts thrown in on occasion. There's many instances where they add a little blackened death sound to the mix as well. It sounds like you're a big black metal fan. I'm a sucker myself for the more gothy inspired metal. Swallow the Sun comes to mind. Old In Flames, Jester Race/Whoracle era to get that kind of folky death metal sound I like. I'm part of this discord channel with a bunch of buddies, essentially a book club, but with albums. Last week's pick was a band called Eluveitie. I really liked it. They're sort of a Celtic spin on the melodic death metal genre. As for Viking metal, old Amon Amarth is my go to. They haven't impressed me in a long time, though.

HEH, I was going to ask if those were the new Klipsch 2.1 desktop speakers. And then you mention them and sound like poo poo. I have the 2.1 TXH old version and I think is using the A-B class amp (not 100% on that since I got them as a refrub from Microcenter). But when I saw they made a new version I was interested in maybe getting them for my other PC. Looks like I will stick with what I got lol. I really like the sound of the older Klipsch 2.1 (the set that I have now) until I crank them to 11 and the sub kind of falls on its face. I'm about to honestly... But the last time I went to a doctor it was $380 for them to say, "this is over my head, I'll refer you to a specialist." They literally did no tests, just charged me for showing up.. then the specialist says, "I think it's allergies. That'll be $650." I hate American healthcare. The fever is gone now and I feel normal... If it comes back I'll go.

They usually have lower billing costs, fully qualified to diagnose these kinds of things and they can prescribe medication. I am not sure what is available in your area, but I hope you have some options.
