Lestat does not use his powers on Louis. He wants an actual partner, not a puppet. He could control anyone and make them follow him. He actually does love Louis (in his fubar way) and if Louis had said no, I don't think he would have killed him. He would've just kept pursuing him.

I love how much you're into this, I love this show so much. I'm sure some people have been up in the comments telling you that Lestat didn't make Paul jump, and I think that too BUT! Paul was clearly suffering from some kind of mental illness, and the fact that Lestat invaded his mind at all and told him that he was the devil, I'm willing to bet that really added to the instability. So like, it's not that he had a direct hand in it, but an unintentional indirect hand is how I personally see it. Loving your analysis already, you're super cute and funny, I'm subbed and seated!

Your reaction is EVERYTHING, this show is just SO good, you're in for a ride! Paul definitely had some intense mental health issues, a popular theory is that he was potentially schizophrenic. His death always gets me...everytime you said you the love the family and their dynamics I was like 😅 The timeline is a little wonky this first episode, but Louis and Lestat had been hanging out for a few months. It wasn't a potion, Louis said Lestat had taken "un petit coup" which translates to "The little drink". It's just what they call when a vampire only drinks a little bit from the human and doesn't drain them completely. He said it takes a lot of restraint from the vampire which is why most humans die. Louis and Lestat's relationship is toxic for sure, but it's just. so. good! Personally I doubt I'd say yes after what Lestat did, but in a different scenario yes for sure. I don't blame Louis whatsoever though!

Killing the priests is a moment of liberation in the show to me because it represents Lestat destroying what the church represents for Louis (not saying it will fully free Louis of that Catholic guilt & his suffering mental health). It’s definitely a violent scene, but thematically at least within the narrative they deserve that death Lestat brings. Miss Lily did NOT though! I wish she was alive :( I think Lestat’s line at Paul’s funeral “Miss Lily proved to be a poor substitute” is quite telling of how he disposes of human life that doesn’t serve him. He’s still a vampire. I think your suspicions of Lestat make sense, and time will tell. I was probably more lenient with Lestat’s actions bcuz I already expected it to be messy & definitely got sucked into the romance (I adore that church alter kiss “wedding” scene with all the gore around them). Watching reactions I realize that I’m in the minority of ppl who never even wondered if Lestat was involved with Paul’s death, bcuz his schizo-adjacent symptoms & inability to cope with change were so well depicted. Most ppl have the same questions you do after the pilot bcuz it’s obvious Lestat wants Louis all to himself (the show is gothic romance & you’ve picked up on the toxicity portrayed)

I actually ended up learning a bit of New Orleans history through this particular adaptation. Mainly that for a period, race & the laws surrounding it came up a little differently there due to it being under Spanish and French rule before becoming a part of the USA. Under French & Spanish rule, there was slavery, but also mixed race families could exist and some mixed race peoples could inherit wealth and property (including plantations and slaves). So there is an implication to Louis's family history (they mention how their business used to be in sugar), that they are a creole/mixed family that could have had a previous hand in the slave trade. That makes it doubly interesting how that ties into Louis's current business ventures and his confession to the priest about how he uses vulnerable people to turn a profit. How he exists in this between-space of wealth & privilege, but also a closeted Black man in 1910s America. He lives in this almost protected bubble watching the struggles of more impoverished people, especially Black people, outside that bubble. How he can be both a marginalized person and yet can exploit other marginalized people is just one more way he's such a multifaceted, complex character. His duality is so masterfully written and fascinating.

Paul was just mentally ill, yeah. A lot of people try to blame it on Lestat, but it's been confirmed that he had nothing to do with it. Paul was probably schizophrenic, and in the novel, he died in a similar way prior to Louis ever meeting Lestat. He just could see it in his head. And Lestat has a lot of...trauma associated with both religion and being abandoned/ignored. So his reaction to the confession was really just ..that mess 😂 Plus, he was afraid Louis would also try to kill himself since he just screamed about wanting to die. He did kill Lily, but you know ...vampire 😅 He gotta drink some people, and was pissed off about being ditched.

Lestat DID NOT kill Paul. He wouldn't do that to Louis. Lestat wasn't a fan of Paul, but he knew Louis loved him so he wouldn't have hurt him. It was his mental health issues. He did kill Miss Lilly. Louis didn't love her and she was in the way.

Everyone always thinks Lestat caused Paul's decision. I think that's intentional on the part of the writers. You will get an answer about that later. I won't spoil it for you. I will just share my thoughts that I had when I watched ep1. I didn't think Lestat directly caused Paul's death. Paul was not mentally well and he had been institutionalized in the past. I think that is canon from the books. The books were never my cup of tea but I did start the first one years ago. I only got a couple chapters in. I had also seen the movie as a teen years before this show, so i had a vague recollection of the general personalities of characters and some plot points of the story. So from what i remembered of Lestat, I DID however think that Lestat playing around in Paul's head at dinner was not...helpful to Paul's mental state. I also believed Lestat is cavalier and reckless enough that he wouldn't care of any consequences of lashing out at Paul for pissing him off.

I read this in the 80s and each book in the series got better, but only with Lestat in the mix. Book 4 is by far my favorite, which is, The Tale Of The Body Thief. Unfortunately, Anne Rice really spread herself thin when she started the Mayfair Witches serious after Book 4. The quality wavered much more in both series, and I checked out of both of them due to the insanity of some of writing. Anne Rice's autobiography was pretty frank, but given the nature of her writing, I'm not surprised.
