Friend of mine used to buy decrepit old houses cheap to rehab and flip. Bought one old house and they decided they had to tear out the old plaster walls and replace them. Started tearing a wall out and found wads of cash stuffed in the walls. They tore out every wall in that house and found a ton of money the old fellow who lived there had hidden away for safe keeping. They checked and he had no family when he passed. So they kept the money, rehabbed the house and sold it.

This woman is a national treasure.. Just when I think I’ve finally reached Prepper Jedi status, I learn something completely necessary that I never thought about. Putting cash in different parts of the house, should one end or area of your house be affected by catastrophe, was genius. The only problem with that, for me, is that I will need to rely on a brain trust to help me remember where I stashed it all! I can’t even keep up with my coffee cup half the time.

50 years ago my uncle - my mother's younger sister's husband - was terminally ill and in the hospital. My aunt was sitting with him but said she had to leave because she needed to go to the bank to get some cash. He told her not to leave. If she needed cash she could go out to a landscaped area in the yard and dig under a specific rock he described. He had some cash hidden there. She thought the meds were getting to him but she stayed until visiting hours were over. The next morning she went out to the spot he described and started to dig. Six inches down she found an old mayonnaise jar stuffed with over $30,000 in cash. He'd been saving and hoarding it for years. She was astounded. And as he passed away a few days later, had he not casually mentioned it, she never would have known it was there.

Traffic lights out and not one police officer insight to direct traffic. So many people unsure on how to drive in those conditions. Thank goodness it happened during the day. Don't hide the cash anywhere in the master bedroom or in the freezer. First place thieves look. I would also add keeping at least a few paper checks. Landlords and utilities may be willing to waive late fees if they're holding a check, even if it can't be cashed for a few days.

The banks we use will not let us charge or debit anything in a different state unless we call them and tell them where we are. When we plan a vacation, I come up with a list of every state we are going to be traveling in and the dates we are gone. If a charge pops up that looks wrong, we have a call from the bank. Passwords are fun. I had to have a 16 character password when I was a system administrator. Use a phrase. At that time I used one that I enjoyed saying in my head. It started with “this job sucks the big one”. It was such a fun way to start my day. Consider making the S in a phrase a $ and the letter o to a zero. Make sure you regularly change your passwords.

I always carry a Gold Half Eagle and a Morgan Silver Dollar in a coin flip in a secure location inside my wallet. These are only average condition/date coins and only worth slightly more than melt value, so you coin guys -- don't flip out. I've used the Half Eagle (about a 1/4 oz) on one occasion and the silver dollar came in handy several times. In a pinch, the gold has the purchasing power of a few nights stay at a nice hotel and the silver will fill up your gas tank or buy a couple meals. I do leatherwork and designed a custom wallet with a 2by2 inch pocket where the coin flip securely sits. And no, I do not sell these wallets, but sometimes make them for friends/family. Leather working is easy enough, so try your hand at a new talent.

All true. This is how I covered bills for my mother back during the multi-hurricanes of 2004. A Publix was open, but really only for canned goods, dry goods, and the magazines upfront; Mom was ahead of me trying to use her card at a blank point of sale machine, swiping and wondering why nothing seemed to happening.😂 The checkout guy and I were just looking at her, waiting for realization. Then I went to pay him for her purchases and she protested. Then entire time this poor guy was now "ringing up" my purchase - by hand, on pad and paper, then adding the total - I was trying to explain that their generators barely powered the lights, the registers weren't on and neither were the point of sales. I mean, really now. But yes, machines and computers go down during everyday times; after a major event, even if a store was full power, the computers might not be able to connect with various banks and your card may not work. Being a cashless society isn't a great thing.

I don't have a lot of cash there but I have enough that hopefully they'll think that's all there is and keep moving.

Everyone needs to have at least 6 months of living expenses in cash. If banks go down, you'll lose your accounts for months, both checking and savings. Todays automatic deposits force us to be "investors" instead of "depositors". When a bank fails, the small investors (owners of the checking & savings accounts) will be the LAST to get paid. We'll be darn lucky to get a few pennies on the dollar if anything at all. At the same time, any loans or mortgages held by the bank will be sold to the highest bidder so you will still owe that money to someone somewhere!

I live in the west and someone in upstate NY paid their cell phone bill for a company i never heard of. Got my money back. Wondered if the person was found and charged? Don't know.

We have cash on hand for little stuff. We also have a credit card that I use like a prepaid debit card. Having both is helpful. Cash gets my immediate needs cared for, and the credit card secures lodging further away. So far, everywhere hasn't been down at the same time. And no hotel wants just cash. Stay mindful!

Ykw, i see your point. I love being able to tell panhandlers " dont carry cash! Were headed toward a cashless society, dude!!" Tyw though, I'm really starting to see the genius of it. As a side note, ive been stockpiling the worlds greatest invention: toilet paper! Imagine lifecwithout it!!

My house was broken in to this week. I lost 350.00 in cash that they found my computer and a few things that I will not mention here. I thought I had things in places that they would not find. I was wrong. They ripped the alarm system off the wall took the police 30 minutes to respond. This took place while I was asleep in my bed. I woke up to the police waking me up.

Password keeper, get an actual, physical address book and use that. Toss it in your grab-and-go briefcase in case of emergency bug-out ( like a house fire) and you're good to go.

If you have debt you own nothing! I am a prepper, but even so unexpected things happen. My old car engine blew up and I have to have it towed it for repair, if possible. But I had enough cash to cover it. I have a decision to make depending upon the, outcome of the garage inspection, as to whether to make a repair if possible, or scrap it and purchase another. There are plenty of older models out there. I will not purchase a new car even if i can afford it, which I can not. I purchased my car 15 years ago for $1400, and besides for regular servicing and the odd necessary repairs, tyres ect, it has served me well. I keep" change jars as well. Sometimes I take it to the local shop and they welcome the change to top up the till every now again when I purchase such things as bread. Have you noticed that they are always short of small denomination coins?
