@kieronfarley1924 Жыл бұрын
I remember getting into financial independence and all that at the start of uni. I’ve just graduated now and I’ve fully realised that unless you wanna scam someone you basically have to be a content entertainer or maybe at a push a writer. Most Instagram hustles are a pyramid scheme and they basically push you to repackage what you have just learnt to teach other people and after I realised this I tried doing it my own way for a bit but it’s just way to much time and money for ROI sunless u dedicate all your free time initially. It’s a shame as I still would love to live out a van one day, but I’m now thinking remote work might be the solution.

22:13 Such an important conversation to be had... the realistic pathway to financial independence for anyone not earning a _scalable_ income is... pretty much non-existent, if not a longwinded, winding road. Possible, but "treacherous." But what you're saying raises the point: why are so many important jobs not also high-paying? It's a deeper societal issue that we don't prioritize nurses, teachers, construction workers, etc. My personal opinion though, is that "financial independence" should be defined by each person. You don't need to be a trillionaire to be financially independent, and wealth includes health and happiness. Having realistic, and *meaningful,* goals to aim for is the true financial independence. Great video Stephen!

I can’t speak to the rest but as a nurse, I can speak to that. The income is quite scalable depending on qualifications and experience. If one’s interested in high paying nursing areas, can look in CRNA, you can earn up to $300,000. Or you can even earn up to $250,000 as a travel nurse with certain assignments, especially during Covid, it was crazy. But you can still make bank with nursing. It’s all up to you. But you’re still kinda right, we can always do with more haha 😂💕

Those last 8 minutes were gold Steve. Other approaches to understanding the economy that's resonated with me personally have been through engaging with politics, but not the "political party" kind of politics but ideology. I always felt that something was missing in the FIRE or FI movements critique of the modern work market. Selling your time for money, being told what to do every day by a boss, not being in control of your life - to me this sounds like a general critique of the capitalist market haha! For all to be free, like you describe it in the end, truly free - then the nurse needs to be able to keep being a nurse! If everyone is making money off of telling others how to make money, nobody really makes anything anymore. The ideology that closest answer those questions to me have always been anarchism/libertarian socialism and yes, it's utopian and seems almost impossible to achive - but maybe it's still a better shot for that nurse to becoming truly free. Anyways, love you openess and that you do think critically about your own philosphy. Feels way more genuine then a lot of other creators.

As someone on ODSP (disability benefits), I get to be shamed and blamed for stealing all the income/wage increases from essential workers like nurses in Ontario, yet be expected to barely survive on just over $1300 CAD per month (if I was an individual). I need to find some way to earn my own non-traditional income because I'm realistically one inevitable renoviction away from complete homelessness. A 40K income would actually be a HUGE change of circumstance and opportunity! Watching KZbin financial advice about cutting expenses and saving, despite maybe being overall short-sighted, still encouraged me to squirrel away a little bit of an emergency fund.

6:30 "Splitting costs equally"! This is where men abuse women financially. Men and women don't get paid equally so should split cost if at all 'proportionately' in ratio to their earning not the total expenses. This is why men retire with more. They have less self care expenses, then supplement their lifestyles with a live in 'girlfriend' paying them while the can comfortably bump up the expenses and still save the difference.

I don't think this is a particularly underdiscussed phenomenon, especially on places like reddit or blogs, and I think these are all topics that are not "under the covers" in the actual FIRE community besides youtubers with several million subscribers like Graham Stephan or maybe Tiktok. There's the obvious thing of people on youtube talking about FIRE using youtube for FIRE but on other media or sites it's obviously not even considered as significant. But I still really enjoyed the video and think the title / thumbnail is fair enough and it was cheeky and funny enough to get me in here. Your perspective and experiences were nice to listen to and got me to stay, and you seem like a thoughtful guy who is very self aware, but that also is empathetic with other people's situations and I like your explanations because of that and like your outlook in life in general. Income is indeed so important, and also knowing oneself and what do you value can certainly help deciding if it's a valid path for you Not sure if you'll read this, but if you do, I personally think that the channel would benefit a lot from taking more care of the comment section. There is a lot of spam, and among it, there are also a lot of people who shared interesting experiences that IMO could be encouraged by giving them a hearted comment or a reply to distinguish them from the spam, or the annoying comments from ppl who just didn't watch the video and just read the title and wrote sth

I would still see myself working part time in the hobbies I have so that is something I'm looking for at the moment. I was on the same journey and believed in FIRE for a couple of years before I reached the same conclusions. I reached a plateau in my software dev income, in the EU I have to pay high taxes on investments, and yeah I want to enjoy my life and travel. Eventually, it all fell apart. On the other side, social media shows luxurious life, every mindset guru says that you need to just believe and visualize the best outcome, that you need to quit a job, yet they don't think about who will teach their kids and who will treat them in hospitals. Financial independence is an illusion. As well as all the personal and success advice from online gurus. The best way is to define your values and live according to them
@ryanmaneo Жыл бұрын
I think a practical version of this would be to save enough not to retire per se, but to purchase property outright so that your monthly living expenses are much less than the minimum wage in that city/region, such that you can work part time + save money + have free time and put money toward ACTUAL retirement without actually doing "FIRE" or quitting work. Bonus: could do a fun job like be a barista or work at a cute little gay bookstore for your whole life and not be living paycheck to paycheck. This is my "FI" goal.

Very unrelated to the topic but: Do you use a mist filter, Stephen? The image looks mad cozy. Anyway, I've been following the FIRE way ever since I started working after uni, that's around 5 years. I realized very quickly that a full time job is mind-numbing to me and that I need to find something to aim towards to, in order to not go mental. I feel alienated amongst co-workers, friends and family with this topic, so I really dove into this topic. I have the exact problem you're describing, since I work in a traditional job, and it's not paid good. Actually I've earned less than the median and average income despite working more and more (I'm not from the US or Canada btw). It's frustrating because the ambition that comes with FIRE wears off quickly and the light at the end of the tunnel gets darker and darker. Then you search for more FIRE content, more knowledge, more ways to save money etc. to keep going. I'm well aware that it's by no means a perfect "system" or protocol to follow, that I should instead focus on increasing my income as well as find a way to make a living with something I actually ENJOY doing rather than resent it, but I just can't seem to find that and earning more is much easier said than done. I picked up a second job as a part-time hustle (like 8-10 hours a week) to make more money and ended up breaking my leg in a work accident there after just three months, effectively ending myself up in a much worse position than I was before. I've worked my ass off and feel constantly burned out, and I'm still in my 20s. I can't imagine doing this work thing for another few decades, I just don't think I would survive it. Unless a miracle with my risk on investments happens, I don't see a good life for me at this point. The more time you spend worrying and feeling bad about yourself because you can't seem to be happy with this work focused lifestyle while everyone else seems to be fine with it- even HAPPY, it just drives you further and further away from the traditional work-retire-die scheme.

The most important thing is earning a high income somehow. That way, you can go financially independent and have a great lifestyle (that costs more than 40K annually), it will take some time though and this path will lead to FI when you're in your 40s, probably - which is still very young. Take my word for it. And yeah, people should definitely quit if they're only "entitled" to a 1% raise. Nurses are in high demand in places where the pay is high e.g. Switzerland, USA, etc. I'm a medical doctor and I quit a job recently because new management wouldn't honor my request to work part-time. Quitting was stress-free because I am financially independent. I feel bad for the patients, but I also want to enjoy my life.

I think this video is a testament that men know exactly what they are doing when it comes to money and romance or lack of romance. As long as you were honest with a woman about hookups and causal relationships, she in turn is a consenting adult. At the same time, a relationship where people live together is a gold mine for men to save money. This is why, I personally don’t partake. And I don’t think women should either. All parties are consenting but it’s the fact that men often want to split bills 50/50 in a relationship to later achieve financially independence the erks me. If you are married by all means share finances but in a relationship or casual relationship is just a waste of money for women. Men are fickle.

I think alot of these early retirement influencers talk about this lifestyle as though it's sustainable for people and really it's not. Alot of people want to enjoy the entertainment options and experiences available every day NOW. They key is moderating how much you "live for today" against how long you're willing to be tied to earning your income with your labor. I don't need to stop working entirely at 40 if I have good work life balance. Yes, having full agency over my time would be great. But if you recognize you're giving up that agency so you can enjoy life a little more on your terms TODAY instead of 10, 15, 20 yrs from now....don't see anything wrong with that.

I can relate the title. Introvert. Not into a public speaking. Been struggling, hustling here and there, ddash instacart, now making adult content without face, 6k/mo. But I feel guilty coz im somewhat religious. And I use the money to provide my mom and niece. I knew they wouldn’t accept it if they knew it’s a dirty sinner money. I’m conflicted.

Nobody who is serious about their faith would do something like this. Nobody would marry you, knowing your history. You're just choosing the easy option. When times get tough, the mentally weak women always resort to selling their body. There are a million more honorable ways to make money, but you're spiritually weak and can't resist the easy money.

yeah I'd recommend getting outta there. The unavoidable emotional and mental baggage you're gonna carry for the rest of your life won't be worth it.

Hey Stephen, Plz help me understand, 75000$ / 12 = 6125$ (is before tax) and how in the world, you got $5996 (after tax)??????I mite be wrong, but i make same salary now and I live in QC and i make half of 5996$ LOL🤣
@steveantonioni Жыл бұрын
I mentioned the pre-tax matching pension contribution which will make the after tax numbers look weird. I’ve also simplified the numbers, so they’re probs off by a bit

@@steveantonioni ahhh, that's the catch... Trust me taxes (especially quebec) literally kills us... Thnx for quick response

The RE part from FIRE may be hard. But adding to your financial stability/independence is always a smart move.

Wow, amazing to see others trading with Ms. Bonnie Antelo, I am currently on my 5th trade with her and my portfolio has grown tremendously.

l also invest with mrs Bonnie Antelo, she charges a 20% commission on the profit made after each trading session, which is fair compared to the effort she put in to make huge profits.

A whole lot of nothing in this video. Nothing wrong with achieving Fi at various speeds. No one in the Fi movement actually thinks you must do it one way. You are just making straw man arguments for no reason
