Another way in the free version is to click on a component, then right click on entity info and the first line in the menu tells you how many of them there are.

I have 2018 pro and my model is acting like it is a big component - if I make a change in one scene, it appears in another scene. Unless I made a component by accident, I don't know how to find if I did. I followed your steps and it shows 21 component instances, but not what they are. How do I find them? I don't recall making any components at all in this model.

Thank you very much for your efforts and clear explanation. My question is : can I make a repository for a components that be able to used in multi projects ? How to manage these components ? Forgive me for my simple question - I thought - , but because I am new to this software .
