I raised a pair of quail chicks and once they became adults kept them in a little aviary run in the garden. Then one of my cats broke the netting and killed them both. Never been so heartbroken in my life. Rip lil guys

I’m so sorry for your loss. We have to deal with quail injury and death in the adventure of raising quail. Sometimes it’s hard. Hopefully you’ll give quail another try and find the experience rewarding.

I started to do something like this... it seems my cellphone used my photos to suggest this to me, i am glad it did... for now, I make groups of 40-50 eggs, from which around 30 hatch, later from those... around 17 survive. these are my first tries and i am not sure what could have been wrong. I found that one or two move like being depressed and then found dead. I will try to make them cages with soil and plants to look around, I am afraid if they would be at any risk. what is your opinion?
@FanmasHomestead
@FanmasHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
You have lost 13 out of 30 hatched. The number seems to be high. Things I can think of is the environment - is the area warm and dry? Also not all adult quail are friendly. Some of the adult quail could attack the baby chicks, and baby chicks could die from the attack. If you don't have broody hens that can protect the baby chicks and give them warmness, you should consider raise them under heat lamp or brooder plater until the baby chicks are older enough to be outdoor. If you only have one broody hen, you should separate them with the rest of the quail. Give the baby chicks and mom a safe place. Otherwise other adult quail will attack and kill the baby chicks.

@@FanmasHomestead well by themselves 19 were able to break free from the shells, I helped the others specially the ones that only made a hole but remained there for over a day. I pick hens that have been brooding over some fake eggs i provided, but as you say i have to keep them separate from the group. then some things like getting stuck in between the drinker and the wall or not being able to stand on their own was the common factors. today another group began hatching... from 50 eggs, 21 are with a mother, while 5 are drying still. 4 died at night they just did a hole on the shell and that was all they did. i havent checked how many left are going to break soon, last time it took about 3 days for all of them to hatch or be sure they failed.

@@libradog293 I have some developed eggs that never hatched. There're so many reasons. You may never know the exact reason. I have baby chicks died in the first few days mostly due to weakness or accident too. Good luck on your baby chicks. Hopefully your broody hens can be good mothers to the baby chicks.

@@FanmasHomestead I hope so too... The first group will be 2 weeks old on Friday... I will wait until they cannot force themselves through a canary cage bars and then wait until I can tell male from female surely

@@libradog293 Be sure to not open the incubator during lockdown phase, if you do it too much or for even a short window the inside wrapping in the shell can shrink wrap the baby inside because it dries out with the humidity change. Only open once about 12-24 hours after first egg has hatched to collect the babies to move to brooder. But do it fast and quick and try not to have any fans on around you. Just collect the newborns once a day so as to not endanger those still in the eggs. Cause if they have pipped, it lets in the air of the room you're in when you open the incubator and dries out the inner lining REALLY fast and traps the baby inside and they can't move to continue hatching out.

Gracias por contestar. Perdón por no explicarme bien,me refiero al la edad de las madres ,si introducirla con los bebés antes de que comiencen a poner huevos o no importa que estén poniendo huevos.
