As a bloke from outback Australia, I discovered the need for small cars in Europe the hard way. I rented a small, 7 seater van to tour around Britain with my family. When I got to the rental dealership, they only had 9 seater vans available and offered me one at the same price as the smaller 7 seaters. Bewdy, I thought. Travel around Britain in spacious luxury. It was truly terrifying trying to drive this lumbering monstrosity along country lanes and through crowded villages. Never again. Next time I'll hire two little hatch backs designed for the conditions.

This is why in the 70s Japanese cars came and filled the gap. Then in the 90s Korean cars came and filled the gap when Japanese cars became more expensive. Now the Romanian Dacia is increasingly popular to fill the gap of cheap cars. The Chinese cars will storm Europe soon enough to save the day in terms of cheap cars. One thing is sure it is becoming increasingly difficult to own and to maintain a car

It’s quite simple actually… the difference between an suv and a sedan will be between 400 and 1000 kg. Baterries are very expensive and put a lot of weight on the car. So manufacturers instead of making cheap electric small cars for 30k make electric suvs for 40-50k because it’s a better deal for your money. And obviously this appeals to the european and american middle class. This in turn speeds up the race to the electric future, because once the batteries will become cheaper as time passes small cars could become once again mass manufactured and very affordable. I predict that could happen around mid 2030s. That is unless public transportation becomes too good, and robo-taxis take over, along with bikes and just walking. The latter is more likely. Until then the poor wil either have to stick with old second hand cars if they live in rural areas and need it, otherwise just take public transportation and an e-scooter/e-bike. Perhaps and uber if you go out of town. It’s actually the best route the goverments took.
@M67v
@M67v 2 жыл бұрын
@@AleXcsGaming In other words, they’re pushing the SUV envelope not because it’s what’s best for the consumers, but because it’s easiest for them to turn a profit. SUVs, most of the time, are no better built than their car counterparts (Exhibit A: The Volkswagen ID. 4, a 2021 car that uses rear drum brakes). They just appear to be more substantial due to their size, weight, and appearance. Because of that, people are willing to pay more for that. On top of that, now manufacturers tend to equip the SUVs with more features to make them even more enticing. I don’t buy into the SUV façade, and in fact I find their gluttonous size and compromised handling quite undesirable. Unless you truly needed the space, how is paying more for a vehicle you don’t need a better deal?

Simple reason for the weight-adjusted CO2 emission limits: Germany has several carmakers that produce large, heavy, luxurious cars. So Germany decided they won't have it that car manufacturers of small cars (Renault, Fiat, etc) would get an advantage so they negotiated this weight factor into the regulation. Which, as you pointed out, resulted in it being completely uneconomical to build small, efficient cars.

I had a new car with Lane keeping assist that you had to forcibly disable every time you started the car. I used to drive on a 40mph road which meant the lane keeping (active >35mph) was on. I'd regularly have to cross the middle line to avoid parked cars but then the lane keeping assist would kick in and try to force you back. On two or three occasions when I've not caught and forced past the lane keeping.. the emergency braking systems had to also activate. There was plenty of space for me to perform the manoeuvre at the speed I was going but because it's not a unified system its more dangerous than had they not been active. Cars should either self drive or they should not. Half and half systems are dangerous.

@lawrenceholden3789
@lawrenceholden3789 2 жыл бұрын
I find the whole concept of these systems ridiculous. Anyone driving a vehicle has had to learn a skill and pass a test, their focus should be on driving, hazard awareness, perception, should know where they are on the road, when to brake, what speed they are doing. A vehicle having systems which distract and irritate the driver, let alone decide when to brake is a liability. I don't want a new car with a distracting I Pad stuck on the dashboard to have to struggle with, I don't even pair my phone as this would be a major distraction, easy to stop somewhere safe and return the call when I can give it my full attention. With a competent focused driver, the Dacias are not only safe but probably a lot more enjoyable than the expensive gadget ridden SUVs.

All you should have to do on any of the cars with lane keep is blip your blinker, and then you can change lanes without it intervening. I've never had to turn off lane keep on my Audi except for situations where the cameras can't work right (crappy painted lane lines, or them being obfuscated by something) because I blip my blinker if I'm changing lanes anyways. And at least on my car turning it on and off is as simple as clicking a button on the blinker as well. I wouldn't buy a new car that doesn't have lane keep and adaptive cruise capabilities, it makes driving on the highway in traffic much less annoying.

The first 2-7 years which is waranty time nothing is wrong. Just if you want to safe money and keep the car as long as possible I would avoid them. The LED's theoretically last long enough but the housing of the headlamp is out of plastic and these are not normal LEDs like in your electrical christmas candles, they can get quite hot. If you keep a car for 10 years or more and the headlamp is exposed to heat and also the sunlight or you do a lot of motorway driving some stones on the road hit the old plastic housing... it is posible that it get's a little leakage where water can penetrate inside. And if there is humidity inside the housing, the LED's on the PCBA do not tend to last very long. These headlamp are not cheap and will probably be not so easy to get in 10 years (complex production) compared to a bulb (simple production) which, by the way, you could change yourself.

@@meloaleo I did not want to rule out any car (^^). It's just my choice of the best compromise to safe money. But the 1.0 VVT-i 3-Zylinder engines are known to be very reliable... if you change the oil time after time... They have a timing chain and tend to be easy to maintain in general. In my opinion it's a little more difficult to change the engine air filter compared to my Auris with the 1.33 VVT-i and there is less space to work under the hood. My dad has an early Skoda 1.2 TSI for example which is known for engine problems. It also has a Turbo and direct injection. I would not buy one... but he does drive it a lot and he never had any problems. It's also a little bit luck always I guess (^^).

My first car was an used Peugeot 305 and I don't believe cheap cars must be particularly tiny. The Fiat Punto - mentioned in the article was a great fun car to drive. On the whole safety issue concerns, if young people can't afford cars, they will switch to motorcycles. OK even more fun, but government representatives do not pretend it's about safety!

Oddly enough it veers me to go complete electric as they have less components that can go wrong. As they should!!! Cities are for the people, not for the cars. If you love your car so much, go and live in usa or rural europe. You have enough space there. I want public transport, more metro stations, more alleys to walk ok. More bike lanes. This is the future of the modern urban space
@AleXcsGaming
@AleXcsGaming 2 жыл бұрын
@@thijs2906 no, class has nothing to do with it. It’s simply unsustainable for everyone to have a car in the major cities of europe. 1. Not enough space for everyone, constant traffic jams, always seeking for parking space 2. More pollution in the air 3. Electric cars have batteries which make a car heavier and more expensive. Instead of making a 30k small hatchback companies prefer to make 40-50k plus SUVs that appear to the middle class and beyond. This in turn is a compromise that indeed makes cars a luxury item, but that’s because of climate change and urban centers becoming way too crowded. I’d rather take the metro and an e-scooter to work everyday and make 10-15 minutes instead of going for 30-60 minutes commutes in my car. More convinient, I have more time for myself, I spend less money and I’m more enviormentally friendly. And there’s more room to breath! Now, if you live in a rural community, just buy an old diesel until electrics become more affordable.

Not enough people are spelling this out: There's something very wrong with how big, heavy, powerful and thirsty cars are getting "pushed" by weird efficiency coefficient formulas. A ~200hp, 1.6+ ton SUV gets a way higher efficiency rating (C or even higher) than smaller, lighter cars. Case in point: My 2017 ND MX-5 had an F rating when new (2nd lowest at the time) while my parents' 2017 2.0 TSI, 4Motion Tiguan had a C rating. The VW weighs around 600 kilos more, uses at least 2l/100km more in fuel and with its way higher mass and higher number of gadgets certainly uses up more resources in production. The way I understand it, the Mazda gets penalized for not having rear seats - when we all know that most of the time in real life, cars will only have one occupant anyway (the driver). It seems to me that despite our rational-sounding talk about having to dial back emissions, the development WRT cars has gone in the complete opposite direction. Just look at, say, the VW Golf and how it has become larger and larger (and way heavier) since the first generation back in 1974. Look at the hp numbers of, say, an E34 BMW M5 (315 PS) vs the current G30/F90 M5 (almost 600 PS). And going back to the ND MX-5: It's the only car in recent memory that actually became smaller and lighter with the introduction of a new generation (NC to ND). And that pretty much illustrates the problem that I see with modern car development. They should be getting smaller and lighter, but in reality they're getting needlessly larger and heavier.

It's not impossible to build a small, fun, safe car in 2021 that doesn't weigh 1.5 tons or more. Subaru prices in UK jumped about £3k in late 2019/early 2020 due to the emissions fines cost being passed on, they don't sell enough units in UK/EU, now we lose the Levorg and BRZ......all a great shame 🤷‍

Skoda at the time had a much worse reputation compared to now and was considered a joke back then (can remember the jokes about Skodas and Ladas in the 90's). Now however Skoda has more prestige as a brand and is better regarded, so can charge more. Will it be viable to have new batteries fitted to a 15 year old electric car? I seriously doubt it. SUVs are one of the biggest scams of 21st century, because people buying them say it's because they are more spacious, comfortable and safe, while none of these points is true. An Audi A6, a Skoda Superb, a Volvo V90 - to name a few - are more spacious, comfortable and safe than most SUVs.

I think the biggest issue is people leasing cars. It makes cars affordable at most price points. When you had to buy with cash, or get a loan and own the vehicle, you had to save up or buy something in your budget. Now with the lease deals, it means the RRP can be substantially more as people just lease for a small amount of time and get something way out of their normal price point. This is now drummed into people in their early 20’s who are all driving round new cars. It will just get worse as when everyone leases, the manufacturers can literally charge what they want.

Taxing drivers completely off the road altogether would present other issues, such as a £35 billion black hole in tax revenues. There would also be a 3 to 4 million plus increase in the jobless total, due to the closure of oil refineries, fuel tanker drivers, petrol stations, car dealerships, garage services, tyre fitting depots, car body repair shops, places like Halfords, the AA and RAC, Local Authority road repair crews etc... Glad you brought up the inequality factor. I've been worried about this for a while, as new cars get more and more expensive, and so do used cars, poorer people will be priced out of car ownership. They are the people who often rely on car ownership the most to access places of work.
@BTrain-is8ch
@BTrain-is8ch 2 жыл бұрын
That's how not being a customer works though. People that primarily buy used cars don't get a seat at the table. It's an economical approach but the end result is that the companies who make cars make them for the people that buy them from them. Refusing to buy new means you get stuck with whatever the people that do buy new get. Not a great position.

@@alexmaddox2255 I understood your point. My point was that those people were never buying cars from the manufacturers, the people that buy new (in the US at least) aren't looking for bargain basement models, so those people get what the used market gives. That's the effective down side to letting other people choose for you. People talk about this phenomenon like the big bad corporations intentionally eliminated options for lower income people to make them suffer but the lower income people gave up their seats at that table intentionally and the manufacturers responded by cutting options people weren't buying. I'm not saying it's not happening (although it might be a bit overstated since depreciation curves do trend towards zero ultimately). I'm saying if you don't buy anything from Ford then Ford naturally won't care what you need. They'll cater to the people that do and those people apparently want 60k premium SUVs/trucks and Mustangs.

Yet the vast majority of actual CO2 now comes from retail, industry, and shipping. That ship out in port delivering these cars pollutes more during its trip from overseas than the cargo of cars is likely to do in their entire lifetime. The focus right now is on cars as the scapegoat instead of the actual large polluters. They need to stop where they are a give the auto industry time to catch up while they go after commercial polluters.
