Yo Professor Philly Captain, some book report factoids…the Delaware River Canal runs from Bristol Borough to Easton PA where it joins the Lehigh Canal (no direct connection to Lake Erie). Back in the day it was used mostly to transport coal and pig iron to Philly’s industrial base. Toodles.

Thank God you are so candid and honest about yourself. It is this in addition to the cool locations that make this site so addicting. We all hear enough bullshit everyday is is nice to hear the candid honesty.

Bowman's Tower is a cool place. I remember a field trip there from my elementary school back in the 60s. I climbed all the rickety stairs to the very top, and out on to the rooftop. I'll never forget the awesome view of the Delaware from there.

Canal also runs thru New Hope, once as a child mom took us on the mule barge on the canal. Route 32 is closed thru Upper Bucks County due to flood damage. Riegelsville and French Town are good places to visit as well.

Love your videos. I'm always learning about the Philly area. Drove past all these places since 1983 with my job and not once thought about the history or visited anywhere. I was stupid, but now I can watch The Philly Captain videos.

My 9th great grandfather, Johan Jacob Dersham and his son Jacob D Dersham served as Teamsters for George Washington at Washington Crossing. Their military record denotes that info.

That fence under the bridge is to keep the whitetail deer from getting in the wild flower preserve via the stream and chowing down on the rare and tasty flowers and bushes they have there. The fence is I think over 10 feet high all around the preserve ( which is really quite a large area ) because those suckers can really jump when they’re hungry.

The Delaware canal runs between Easton and Bristol. At Easton it connected to the Lehigh,Morris and Essex, and the Delaware and Raritan canals. These canals brought coal from Scranton and Wilkes Barre via the Ashley planes to Philadelphia and Northern New Jersey.

Your comment is priceless @ 10:18 "Most of these guys probably laid eyes on George Washington." By all accounts Washington was a pretty middling General when it came to (to use a football analogy) the exxes and ohs (Xs and Os), but during the Revolutionary War, he led from the front (which is ALWAYS noticed by the troops) and became adept at the fine art of NOT LOSING.

The flat trail along the canal would be the tow path. Mules would pull the canal boats and would need a flat cleared path to hitch to the boats...but don't write a book report about that.😉

I seem to remember that there is a grave site for casualties of the Revolution right on Broad Street, on the west side, above Godfrey Avenue. It was only as large as one house lot. That was back in the fall of 1968. I was just out of the Army and was a new SEPTA driver. I was driving the Rt C bus. The grave may have been relocated since then. It might be worth a scot some day.

Pennypack Park is stocked with trout every year and those armed guards are PA Fish and Game commission officers. I fish Pennypack every year and they will fine you and confiscate your gear if you keep trout without a trout stamp on your fishing license.
