Brilliant trick to freeze the board. wow. BTW, I bought one of the very first Samsung DLPs, the HLM507W I bought in November 2002! I had been waiting for it! Never a problem with it, but traded it for a HLS6767W in 2006 which I still use as our main tv. Over 60,000 hours on this set! It is finally giving me problems which is why I'm searching your videos for ideas, I hate to let it go since it still looks incredible and I love that I can fix it.

This a little OT but you mentioned using a high (faster?) shutter speed to get better low light performance. If I recall correctly a higher/faster shutter speed REQUIRES MORE light and therefore would decrease image quality in low light. I greatly appreciate your videos and that you always mention and encourage keeping these things out of the landfills. That is one of the primary reasons I started doing repairs and restoration.

Wow! very cool and it makes sense, too! I wish I could pick your brain on a couple retro game systems and accessories I'm trying to fix. Some of them seem painfully simple but I can't quite get it... Thanks for all your great tips!

It has to do with the ballast specifically. If you use a Osram ballast and lamp then you have to tell the processor to expect Osram ballast data. Most of these use a Philips lamp and ballast. A very few of these used a Toshiba lamp and ballast but it is electrically the same as the Philips so no change is necessary.

I use a variable output power supply through a low value resistor so it is easy to adjust the current i want to use. Connected to the fan output leads and ground

If I can give a little tip that I learned, spray the board then turn the can around and shoot some air on it it will instant freeze and its the way to be used in real.

When the fans are unplugged i should see a minimum of approx 500 ohms or more. even with the fans in circuit it shouldn't be much lower that that, maybe 250 ohms. Every circuit is different though. When I saw 1 ohm or less thats bad! You just get a feel for whats acceptable and what s not. 30+years in this electronics repair.

Could you have just sprayed the area and powered on the set to see where there's a short or do you absolutely need an external power supply?

Hello there, first of all, very interesting video, thanks for your tips. You said you applied a little current and voltage with an external power supply, I don't have one, so I want to know if I could connect my tv set directly to the ac power source instead of a dc power supply, thanks a lot

no audio may be caused by just not being able to tell which input you are on. very hard to say where to start looking. I would look at the power supply output voltages first. see if you have voltage on the LVDS cable to the Timing controller. Look at the little reg ics on the main board also.

Does the pcb has to be powered on via power supply to find the shorted component or by just having the power wall outlet cable without turning on the unit is enough?
@norcal715
@norcal715 3 жыл бұрын
You have to supply power by one way or another to create heat, by internal or external supply.

If you don't have freeze spray?? It still cost extra to use freeze spray. Every hobbyist or professional have Alcohol ready. Just use the alcohol swab on the board and the fastest evaporated component is the one instead of paying for freeze spray.
@yuppiehi
@yuppiehi 8 жыл бұрын
He didn't use freeze spray. He uses those canned air blowers you can purchase from just about any office supply store. When you turn the can upside-down, the air coming out is freezing. The fluorocarbon in the can is a liquid under pressure. When you spray the can upright, only the fluorocarbon vapor at the top of the can is released. When you turn the can upside-down, the liquid is forced out instead. Be careful when you do this - you can freezer burn your skin!
@davidshanlay

Why pay for extra stuff as long as you can find the shorted component. I would use the alcohol I already have.
@kooler6699
@kooler6699 8 жыл бұрын
hi sir, how to used alcohol to find the shorted component?
@yuppiehi
@yuppiehi 8 жыл бұрын
Using 99-percent alcohol is the same as the freeze spray. Power the board up, apply alcohol at the spot you suspect has the bad component(s), and watch to see which parts evaporate the fastest.

Hello, can you tell me which spray model is it? I bought a spray which im not satisfied of because the frost wont stay on the component for any longer than 1second. I see that yours is staying a lot longer, it lets you see where there is more heat.

Hello: I have been watching your videos and Dave's for a long time,you guys are awesome,(they have thought me a lot) Great work ! Question ? I have HP LC 3260N with no audio or video,the back lights are working but there is no blue screen or video,. Can I apply this principle near the speakers circuit to find if I have a short on the audio or video. The board doesn't have the voltages listed. Thanks for your comments. Ray.

They are SMD caps and are prone to failure, just recap the entire board.

Can you test those SMD capacitors with an ESR meter to verify they are bad?
@yuppiehi
@yuppiehi 8 жыл бұрын
It is best to remove caps from the circuit before testing for ESR. If a cap is in-circuit, possibly it won't give you the correct readings. Especially with these multi-layered boards, you don't know whether the caps are in series or parallel. In this particular case, what happened is that the cap is shorting out, meaning the voltage is passing through the cap, effectively turning the cap into a resistor.

I know that this is an old video, but I hope that you still can use an old trick:-) If you need a greater buildup of ice on a spot where you have cooled the circuit down, you can blow on it with your mouth.
