Finding a Trial Chamber in Survival! ▫ Minecraft 1.21 Update, Snapshot 23w45a ▫ Survival Gameplay

Mojang has released the next snapshot for Minecraft 1.21!
After their reveal at Minecraft Live 2023, Snapshot 23w45a brings us Trial Chambers, a new multi-room dungeon structure complete with Trial Spawners and a new mob, The Breeze! In this video I see how easy it is to find and complete a Trial Chamber in a fresh Survival world.
First, we gear up and go caving, collecting diamonds and upgrading our tools and armour as we search for this new structure. We answer the question of how to find a trial chamber when, 45 minutes later, we stumble across one in a cave!
If you want to play along, here's the info you will need for Snapshot 23w45a with Experimental features enabled:

Breaking into the structure, we're immediately faced with poison arrow skeletons spawned from a nearby Trial Spawner. We encounter several of these throughout the dungeon, spawning Silverfish, Zombies, and even the new Breeze mob - which knocks the player back and can activate redstone components with its Wind Charges!
We also discover some Trial Chamber secrets, including 'vents' you can crawl through, and a secret room with an enchanted golden apple and diamond armour! Throughout the structure we check out loot chests, smash decorated pots for hidden items, and speculate about what Trial Keys could unlock...

I jumped in in survival and found my first trial chamber before I'd even found iron! It probably only took me about 15 minutes. I'd followed an azalea down into a lush cave in search of iron and it was right across the cavern! It was a smaller one that that took me about 20-30 minutes to clear so it wasn't quite as sprawling as the second one i found (which took me over an hour). But I went into it with no armor and only a stone axe as a weapon and very little food. I exclusively used the armor and weapons provided to me by the chamber. it was really difficult and the beds room was much needed xD But i had a lot of fun! I got lucky that a lot of my trial spawners were dropping baked potatoes and glow berries to keep me going. I even found a cake in one of the loot chests of a pool room! I also appreciated that the spawners could drop strength or regen potions and found that very helpful. There is so much variety in the challenge rooms! one of my favorites right now is probably the Stray chamber with the powdered snow floor and catwalk style platforms hanging from the ceiling and barriers to duck and weave around. The powdered snow provided a unique challenge that required me to fight the skeletons long range or I'd freeze to death. I enjoy the level design of so many of the chambers. they can generate with so many unique traps and have built in strategies to help you defeat them. The thin vertical skeleton chambers are so easy to get overwhelmed in but being able to flip down walls of trap doors to block out the mobs and give you a breather and an opportunity to start whacking toes made them much more manageable. I look forward to finding out what the keys will be used for! Considering how many of them i got in the two chambers I explored. I wonder if the chests will be replaced with locked chests or something that you'll need to keys to unlock. Only time will tell.

This looks so cool, and to me, oddly sideways nostalgic somehow? It really just feels the way Minecraft felt, way back when I was first introduced to it... all new, but with a sense that it's familiar to someone else already... Maybe it's the new blocks and the vast, organised structure and the way it's decorated, straight bands of copper across the walls, floor of uniform blocks that look like tiles - reminding me of the first mcyt videos I watched, maybe? DanTDM in his lab, exploring different mods every time, and it was all new to me so I didn't know what was modded and what wasn't, maybe that's it. The feeling of an entirely new structure made entirely of new blocks. That must be where this feeling is coming from. It really is perfect for what it's trying to be, I think! I'm excited to see all the secrets they haven't shown yet!!

7:37 - dungeons can still randomly generate overlapping trial chambers, like they do with many other structures 9:10 - there's currently no formal entrance, even though there's always a room with four beds that could be considered the starting room 11:20 - 😂 11:35 - notably, the trial chamber structure pieces have an empty mob spawning pool, so trial spawners usually are the only sources of hostile mobs here 17:30 - the blocks around the spawner are only an indicator to the player, the actually spawned mobs are defined in the NBT data of the spawner block itself 18:26 - cooldown can probably be inspected in the NBT data via "/data get block", but IIRC it's 30 minutes 20:43 - currently it's a 50:50 split between either a key or a random supply loot drop 21:00 - the spawners seem to spawn mobs one at a time up to a total that depends on the number of players that got near the active spawner before it finished, and only in line-of-sight to the spawner; no pack spawning bonus, as far as I'm aware 21:20 - yes, the spawner's NBT data not only defines the mob type, but can also set its equipment and loot drops (e.g. the poison arrow skeletons are specifically configured to never drop the bow or poison arrow they are holding) 27:12 - the spawners completely ignore light level for their mobs

I found one in 10 minutes right at spawn! :D Started new world, got some stone tools, dug straight down from an azalea tree near me, took a quick detour to get some iron in a water filled cave, kept digging down, got into a lush cave, walked 10 blocks and found a trial chamber! I have no armor at the moment so i'm gonna go do some caving for some iron for some gear, but yeah, they don't seem hard to find

My favorite thing about this new dungeon is that it has the vibe of finding a nether r fortress except in the over world. I really hope they make the breeze drop a breeze rod that can be used as a potion ingredient or in a crafting recipe

I still would love it if the spawners would also be affected if you bring your pets to them so that even in single player you can still have a taste of the scaling difficulty of the trial spawners. (Though it would have a cap obviously giving more incentive to do this in a multi-player setting) It would also give us a reason to get those wolf armor from the armadillo so they'll be extra tough if you do plan on bringing them. Now I just hope they let those be enchantable

I would love the armadillo to give a range of warm colour scutes that can make warm coloured dog armour. If this is so maybe they can create a more verity of coloured turtles (the only other animal with scutes), e.g lime, dark green and a rare cyan. These could drop scutes in the blue-greenish range that we could also use for blue-green dog armour

I found my first trial chambers while digging down for moss in the swamp area I was living in to get mending villagers. Having listened to Spawn Chunks - you saved my bacon as I accidentally dropped right in. At risk of losing my hard won basically enchanted diamond armour I remembered you saying the spawners needed line of site. Gave me just enough space to dig myself out again through the walls!

Since skeletons use poison tipped arrows, them hitting other skeletons or zombies will provide regeneration. But the regeneration 1 boost will not be that effective. If they used harming arrows, then they could not only do some extra damage, but depending on difficulty level, the fight between two skeletons may last for a long while.

Funny you mention that about the zombie spawner. The fist chamber I found was connected to a zombie dungeon, that I had to dig out. It was not the door however, it was connected perfectly to the platform of what I think was supposed to be the final chamber. But that was just rng I've since learned. I haven't found one exposed in a cave or to a mine yet. Though the seed I'm on now seems like it might have, thanks to xero's mini map. They are common enough. But at a awkward layer no one mines at. Something like y40 if I recall. They are going to hard to find when you're hunting them if they don't do something to make the door be exposed or have some kind of indication from the surface or some other clue, like a mineshaft, or perhaps a map from the re-balanced cartographer

I think it’s be cool if they can turn them on and off. People may want to mine out the blocks/ change the chambers and I think this functionality would force people to use the chambers for their intended purpose and THEN have the option to go full sandbox or continue combat

This is a Chamber where the Floor is covered with powder snow, and the trial spawner has skeletons, so I highly recommend to bring a pair of leather boots or Leather Armour.

From the videos I've seen so far, my favourite room is the powdered snow room. It has strays and skeletons spawners but most important it has a layer of powdered snow one block high that really forces you to either slow down or parkour up unless you have leather gear on you.

When the Deep Dark Experimental Preview came out before 1.19, I spent a week across 3 worlds looking for an Ancient City. This time around, I used locate and only looked at the distance to see whether I was anywhere near a Trial Chamber. What happened is I ended up digging underneath it, only to come out in a large cave with the structure exposed. Even funnier, I could see the Trial Structure down in the cave from the surface. If I had just walked over to where I did all that digging I would have found it right away. XD

I would try those out! Even a Granny would have fun seeing if she can beat those things!!! :-) LOL I will have fun this winter - oh when is it due out???? So I have to do a new world? Does it depend on if I've been around a lot of my world I am on? New stuff doesn't spawn on areas you've already visited on your current world, right? Hmmmmmm. That would be fun for sure! I have fun going all over on my worlds traveling though so that makes it hard to get the new stuff on it. I love the new copper blocks big time. I never knew about striking the blocks of copper to take the weathering etc off. Then you can wax them and they stay clear of stuff - no aging. I've not used a shield a lot - just never got used to it but I need to practice and use one. Also, I keep forgetting to have a bucket of milk on me! That is a must for fighting being poisoned. OK I'm excited about this! Can't wait to build with new blocks too.

I was wondering if what Breeze does is meant to be a more interesting version of copper Golem's mechanic. And yes, I KNOW the golem was supposed to introduce an element of randomness to redstone, Breeze doesn't do that, bla bla bla, but if Mojang thought that this is just too boring, and not particularly useful anyway, then a hostile mob which interacts with redstone to make fighting with it harder could be an improved version of 'mob which interacts with redstone' idea, I think. And it's kinda suspicious they don't want to add any of the golems in a seemingly perfect update.

I went in with just a diamond chest, Shield and a iron sword. I was playing in survival, but I used the locate command after a couple of hours of looking. I found 3 or 4 different diamond chests in the chambers and 2 iron and some feather fall diamond boots. I also found pants and a bunch of other stuff. No diamonds though.

There's so much I love about this I just feel like the loot is not good enough. Everything that you've looted from this dungeon you already found from caves on the way. Unless they buff the loot for this place I probably won't be using this dungeon besides for fun and it's novelty because I can get all of the same loot from shipwrecks in a larger amount and with less effort

Love the video and your exploration to find the trial chamber. Took the same seed and coordinates to see for myself in the snapshot yet no trial chamber is found. Wonder if there is no guarantee for a trial chamber to spawn at specific locations.

Sometimes structures have a chance not to spawn because of terrain conditions around them. This can prevent spawner dungeons, end cities, even villages from not appearing in the same places with the same seed. I expect because it's a buried structure it's even more tricky to guarantee generation is consistent across multiple worlds.

That makes sense and I've seen it happen a number of times when chunkbase says there could be something at a particular location, but it ends up not being there. One thing that does surprise me is that flying around about a 1000 x 1000 area I have not seen a trial chamber. There also does not appear to be a locate structure command as well for it.

The pots containing gems *does* make sense, although I'd expect more emeralds than copper. You know, because The Legend of Zelda Rupees are Green, Blue and either red or purple.

@pixlriffs Imagine making your dogs sit on top of all the trial spawners. Setting them up with bone blocks. And then 2 blocks away open trapdoors that have a huge drop with magma blocks. A hopper minecart for collection and a roller coaster with the player... A new type of skeleton farm!!!!! Note: may need some refinement and may get changed with further updates... But you get the idea...
