Mojang has released the first snapshot for Minecraft 1.21!
After learning about it at Minecraft Live 2023, Snapshot 23w42a brings us a hands-on look at hands-free crafting with the new redstone automation block: the Crafter!
I've been preparing for the Crafter by setting up an automated factory for redstone components. But now the Crafter is slotted into the system, does it work how I expected? We look at manually fed auto-crafting and how the block interacts with hoppers and other inventories. We set up a simple pair of Crafters to compact bones into bone blocks through the middle stage of bonemeal - perfect for your skeleton farm!
Then I turn my attention to a factory design which dispenses the ingredients for redstone components into a hopper, and discover that timing is crucial for using this block - since items grouping together in water streams or inside a hopper can lead to the ingredients being added in the wrong order.
We also pay close attention to the texture and sounds of the Crafter - then jump into a Survival world to discover the crafting recipe and see how quickly we can acquire one!
Check out the full snapshot changelog here: www.minecraft.net/en-us/artic...

The quick implementation makes up for the lackluster Live. They got burned saying too much and “disappointing”(I’m thankful for everything they add, so not me) the community over and over. The very first thing I thought of when I saw the Crafter was gold farms. Instead of having a vast storage area full of gold nuggets, pass them through a couple of crafters, and your AFK farm is storing gold blocks. With the space you're saving packing the gold down, maybe now's the time to salvage the gold swords you can get from these guys, toss *them* into an auto smelter, and dump the nuggets you get from that back in with the nuggets you're getting normally.

Even without the practicality of the block's functions, the fact that the block itself is a) able to be placed directionally, and b) different on all 6 faces (yes the sides are just mirrored but the directionality remains important), means that it's also going to be a fantastic little building piece as well. I can already see people lining up the back of it as a reinforced foundation for a wall, and the bottom of it mirroring things like the stonecutter or the furnace/blast furnace with the outline almost makes me wish you could place it upside-down just to use that as a flooring. They've put care into the block, so that not ONLY is it going to give the redstone players more options, but the builders as well. An excellent little fellow.

I don't think you can, but it only crafts when it's pulsed, so with a little effort you can make a setup that only pulses it when the last item for a given craft has been placed in, instead of just running it on a timer. This lets you leave a template in place that never gets pulsed.

The best solution for supplying items in the correct order would be locked hoppers that are locked and unlocked by a clock so that each hopper sends and receives only one item simultaneously. IlMango did a 42 furnace array using this method, but for different reasons. This is exciting tech to add to the game. Great Video.

I can imagine a much more sophisticated system where instead of having pre-set recipes like my redstone component factory here does, you have a row of droppers with basically every crafting ingredient, and the player input kinda 'dials in' the recipe. It'd be much more versatile but quite tricky to program!
@rayexyes8083
@rayexyes8083 7 ай бұрын
@@Pixlriffs The biggest issue is the randomness of droppers. if you had a line of droppers each facing into a hopper, one pulse would dispense all the items into the hoppers in the correct order. then all hoppers are locked with a line of redstone across them all. This line of redstone is pulsed so that each hopper passes on and receives the next item and all items are delivered to the crafter at the end of the line.

Yeah the trouble it's hard to tell if you always have the slots filled since the comparator signal only changes when one is empty so you have be extremely careful with the timing to make sure you don't craft too fast or too slow. So I guess it's a trade off between needing to be careful about item order or needing to be careful about timing. Personally I prefer item order, timing is too annoying but maybe it'll be more powerful

I think that one of the best ways to use the crafter is going to be with shulker loading and unloading. Basically you can have a redstone machine that loads up a shulker with the exact items for the recipe, then you move the shulker to a system that unloads it into a hopper into a crafter. By doing this you can have a system that could craft any item on demand. Since the crafter loads items one-at-a-time top to bottom left to right theoretically you could put all of the ingredients for a cake into a shulker box in that exact order but in reverse and then when the shulker goes on top of the hopper it would put the recipe in the exact order to do one craft of the item.

My first idea was to make a autocrafting contraption that allows you to input 9 stacks/shulkers of items each corresponding to one the 9 slots in the crafting grid. But currently, this would be limited to full 3x3 recipes. I think having renamed items as a temporary slot blocker that get fired out with the crafted item could be a cool feature.

It seems to me like the most reliable method so far is to keep the crafting recipe in the crafter at all times while a slow clock tells it to craft, making sure that the items never get fully drained out of the crafter, so that some are always left behind to be refilled (think item filter logic). To do thisI had a repeater clock slow enough that it'll never drain everything out in one go and then stop the clock once the hoppers stop receiving items. It gets very complicated when you tell a crafter to craft multiple things at once because of timings but this set up where you tell a crafter to craft just one thing repeatedly seems simple enough.

I think that this thing is going to mostly be a “compressor”, used to squash down farm outputs that can be made into resource blocks, with a few fun auto-crafting situations for items needed in mass bulk.
@TheRealWormbo
@TheRealWormbo 7 ай бұрын
I see several categories, or "tiers" if you will, of applications. 1. Farm output compacting. The required circuit for this is relatively easy, and apparently even 1-wide tileable if people want to insert it into their filtering and box loading setup. This applies to a lot of farms - melons, wheat, iron (even the nuggets from bartering which were never really worth it before), gold, redstone, emeralds, sea lanterns, … 2. Combining farms. A creeper farm and a sugarcane farm can be combined into a flight rocket factory using only two crafters. Add a stone generator to a witch/raid farm to produce various redstone components automatically.* 3. More efficient automatic furnace fuel production. You can pack dried kelp into the blocks now, or turn bamboo into a more efficient fuel source by crafting it into bamboo planks. You could even use a "playerless" nether tree farm to produce viable fuel now, by crafting the stems into sticks or ladders, which *do* burn. Even the sticks from a tree, witch or raid farm could be "compacted" into ladders for fuel usage this way.* 4. Utility crafting. Build a machine that handles the annoying crafting tasks. Need a shulker box of pistons (or two) for a piston bolt? Input boxes of raw materials (logs, redstone blocks, iron blocks, cobblestone, optionally also slime blocks) and get the packed up (sticky) pistons out after some time. Sure, it's slower, but you didn't need to spend time messing with the crafting UI. 5. Storage supplies restocking. Empty shulker boxes take up a lot of space. Fortunately, by packing up shells and logs/stems in a 1:1 ratio, you can auto-craft them on-demand now. But what to do with those empty boxes after takign out ? Well, cactus is always an option. ;-) 6. Mini game restocking. Have players enter arenas auto-equipped with unenchanted iron gear. * Nether tree farms and stone generators unfortunately still require TNT to break the blocks. If you're okay with TNT duplication for that kind of use, you are good to go, otherwise TNT ends up being a consumable supply, but TNT-efficient blast chambers are still a thing. There's one that can break up to about 600 blocks when fed constantly, although its item collection depends on it running at a constant 18000 blocks per hour. Otherwise 240 blocks broken per TNT are the common case.

@@TheRealWormbo even though I know they're renewable now, it still pains me to think of dumping shulker boxes onto cactus lol fuel production was the first thing I thought of when the crafter was announced. kelp farms could already be pretty much self sustaining except they needed a player to come in occasionally to compress into blocks, the crafter can automate that final step now to make a kelp fuel farm a truly infinite cycle

Said this on Ray's page, but the obvious way to dramatically improve the crafter would be to allow locking an item to a slot, not just locking an empty slot. The "locked recipe slot" would not take up a stack count and would use allay logic for what can go in that slot. This means locking a bow would allow any bow to load into that slot, etc. This would also simplify item sorters with tons less redstone needed because the crafter could double as an item filter, even for "unstackables".
@TheRealWormbo
@TheRealWormbo 7 ай бұрын
But is simplifying the crafter really necessary? You already get slot blocking, and you can prefill the crafter. As long as the input hoppers are not empty, you can let it run on a clock running at 8*[number of slot]/[number of hoppers] game ticks.

The water stream is what is messing you up as items in the stream have their innate magnetism to "group up" pulling them out of order. You need a slower and more consistent method of item movement - I've seen hopper lines also grouping as well (messing up X with his tests, especially when unloading and loading the area/world). Hopper lines with "dead" extra hoppers to create spread, slow dropper lines (also better alternating with dead hoppers in the line), and the like will work better. Looked down and saw that Ravenstoner said pretty much the same thing. Oh well.

I think there's a missed opportunity to make this block function far better, and be far more intuitive and useable. Would be really cool if you could use the recipe book to choose which item you want to automatically craft (sort of like a preset) and then just pump the regular items into it, and have it place the right items in the right slots.

I don't think it's a missed opportunity so much as one they deliberately rejected. If it's too easy then it doesn't feel like Minecraft, and honestly a lot of the uses for the Crafter are pretty intuitive as it is. People are going to have to put in some work to make Dispenser autocrafters, but there are already a couple designs for even that floating around now

i wonder if using hoppers instead of water streams would work better for keeping the order, in xisuma's vid they seemed to have a bit of an issue but maybe just spreading the droppers out and having a delay between them would fix that (like your tower of dropper-observer-dropper-observer) and the crafter can push items directly into a hopper too so you wouldn't even need a barrel first for stuff like bow crafting, just straight into a hopper and into another crafter primed for dispensers good video though! really showing off some more of the utility in an easy to understand way, and showing how simple it could be to get one pretty early (although you did get pretty lucky with that village)
@Pixlriffs
@Pixlriffs 7 ай бұрын
The most important thing seems to be avoiding letting the items group up in a water stream or in the input hopper. If items are allowed to stack together before being added to the crafter, it messes up the order. Spreading them out so they're at the same speed as (or slower than) hopper push timings is essential
@rav3nston3
@rav3nston3 7 ай бұрын
@@Pixlriffs maybe using a torch tower to lock the hoppers between the push times could help, or if it's horizontal just a line of redstone i guess, best thing about that would be the ability to queue up multiple recipes at once, locking all the recipe storage hoppers between crafts, and also like x said you could use a filler item to not need to lock slots so there wouldn't even need to be any player input at all (obviously requiring an extra system to pull the filler items out once the crafter is full, but with the directionality of the crafter and the ability to push directly into hoppers allowing you to make them output to anywhere you want that's really not an issue) you considered maybe the items group up on the input hopper because they can't be picked up fast enough? if you're married to the water stream maybe you could use a hopper minecart to insure everything's picked up as soon as possible and immediately pushed into the input hopper below (also the random nature of items from a dropper does kinda mean you need to worry about some of them being slower or faster on their way down the chutes)
@rav3nston3

@@Pixlriffs hi quick update, i got an design using hoppers (that doesn't require locking slots, instead using an item filter and filler items) to work consistently, it looks? modular? and like you could input as many recipes as you want into it? i haven't tried to go any further than the recipe queuing system instead of using a tower of hoppers and trying to slow them down, i alternated hoppers and decorated pots to slow the hoppers down enough to not let things get bunched up, only problems i've noticed so far is making the delay between "crafter full!" and "activate crafter" too short makes recipes with a lot of filler break but that's just trial and error, and there is the issue of items possibly getting bunched up if you use a vertical line of hoppers (because of the whole push And pull issue) coming out of the pot/hopper/pot/hopper line but i haven't noticed Too much of a problem with anything after solving the delay issue also i used decorated pots because not only are they pretty simple to craft (just 9 pots, or 36 bricks per recipe you want to automate, rather than trying to use droppers which take cobble and redstone) but also the single slot does make them convenient for Hopefully not letting recipes get mixed up setting up the filter to pull out the filler items once the crafter is full was simple too, just checking the input hopper for items and extending the pulse (can't really check the crafter because the filler items would be pulled out before it registers), and the timing for the delay in my experience needs to be more than 7-8 repeaters on 4 or maybe 9-10 items in a hopper clock sorry if this was a bother, i was just excited that i had solved a problem like this entirely on my own :3

I'm thinking there must be a way to use signal strength to fill the items in the right order. Read signal strenght, if it's zero, drop an item from the first dropper, if it's one, drop an item from the second dropper, and so on until you have filled as many slots are required for the recipe in question, and then you craft the resulting item.

For your bone auto crafting machine it doesn’t matter which slot the bone is in, so you could point a dropper full of bones directly into the crafter, and directly powering the crafter will spit out the bonemeal and put a new bone in the crafter in one motion. In theory at least, my redstone isn’t great
@Pixlriffs
@Pixlriffs 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, I mostly wanted to avoid a scenario where the bones form a second stack and it can no longer break them down into bonemeal - but the redstone circuit basically prevents it from breaking that way
@TheRealWormbo

Crafting bones into bone blocks has a similar property as crafting logs/stems into chests: The ratio for the intermediate result has the perfect ratio to exactly get one output item from a whole number of input items without any left-overs. That should make contraptions that perform both steps a lot less complicated.

I wonder if we're going to see bamboo farms next to gold farms and/or bartering setups. The space is definitely there, and it'd even be viable to keep nuggets and smelt the boots you get from bartering. (Boots are reliably separable from the other unstackables since 1.20 introduced the chiseled bookshelf.) Would at least finally be a good reason to set up a small blast furnace array.

To get items in the correct order I'd think a dropper queue/chain could be the better way to handle it so you have control of one specific item per tick. A bit more effort to power but less chance of hopper stacking issues.

Probably a much slower means of making an autocrafting array work, but you could also make a single bus line that can be triggered for each individual item, and then trigger them in order based on which recipe the item frame selector is set to, by having a line of redstone with repeater delays that then have a fork which goes to a bus line to activate it. Giving the correct order of items, at the price of speed and size. I'll test it out tomorrow, but I think this could be an acceptable solution. Otherwise what also is possible, instead of a waterway using a dropper/dispenser line towards the crafter and you just fire them in sequence like they are doing a wave and have the items sat above the line

It would be nice if there was a way to lock items to certain slots for certain crafts. Like when you use the recipe book, it shows where each item needs to go? That, but it leaves a sort of imprint that you can turn on and off or even rewrite when you want to do a different recipe so that it’s easier to do these more complex crafts. I’m sure kidders will make mods like that if it doesn’t become a feature, but it’s a thought I had since seeing the crafter.

They need to make it where we can lock in recipes, so a crafter always has 1 item in every slot for a specific recipe and when it has more than 1 item in each slot and receives power it would craft the item while leaving behind 1 one each item for the recipe. It would simplify this so much and make it easier to use and not need these huge messes of redstone behind each one. But this is Mojang and if it's not overly complicated or inconvenient then it's not going to be added, because Mojang hates nice and simple.

In my head, I'm thinking you could attach something like an item filter at the back of the crafter, input your recipe and, when the item supply runs low in the crafting grid, the filter will lock the auto crafter until more items come in.

Instead of having to manually disable slots in your multi-crafter, you could use some kind of filler/blocker item (like saplings or something--it can be any item that isn't an ingredient in what you're trying to craft) to block the relevant slots, then pull them out of the crafter just prior to activation using an item filter. You'd have to encode the positions of the blocker items into each recipe, but at least you wouldn't have to manually disable the right slots each and every time you want to change what's being crafted.

It would be cool if for some special or powerful items you need to find a physical recipe as an item which you insert into an auto crafter and only with the auto crafter you can make it. It wouldn't work even if you knew the recipe and had the items but lacked the 'recipe item'. Who knows you could even find special auto crafters that can craft some items that regular auto crafters can't, but I think that is a bit too much haha
