Dutchman's Agates

Dutchman's Agates

Күн бұрын

Welcome to another video!
I had a great day out on the Columbia River Gorge! I found nice pieces of chalcedony, nodules, and agates.
Unfortunately some shots were having a hard time focusing, so that's something I'll have to work on for next time. But hope it's not too noticeable.
Thank you for watching!
Tot de volgende keer

If you take a cut down plastic milk bottle, and dip it in the water when you arrive, you can splash the shore rocks to make agates more visible!

Thank you for the tip! It helps a bunch when they're wet, so I just might do that.

Go after a big storm and you’ll find lots of good stuff that got washed down.

Nice! Seam agates seem fairly common there. 😀

I wonder about that green glass. Maybe it is a soda bottle that was melted in a campfire? I grew up in the Portland area and never thought of looking along the gorge for agates.

Certainly could've been, that's probably what it is. Definitely give it a shot, you might be surprised what you might find along the gorge!

Are all the CBA's on private land/claims?
@DutchmansAgates
@DutchmansAgates 2 жыл бұрын
What does CBA stand for? If you mean exceptional banded agates; not necessarily, but it's pretty unlikely to find a "museum quality" piece, the ones that fetch thousands on the side of the river. These claims are usually on spots where they erode right out of the ground.

@@DutchmansAgates I’ve always wondered the same thing. CBA? Idk what that means

What's the worth?
@DutchmansAgates
@DutchmansAgates 2 жыл бұрын
Chalcedony isn't worth much, even carnelian isn't. Agates, the ones with truly amazing banding can be worth a lot. But those are rare, and aren't found in the places I hound. Those are usually found on private claims.

In the old days before dams were put in, there were many pebble bars and sandbars all along the river. Awesome places to find agates. There is a KZbinr who hunts agates on gravel bars along the Yellowstone River in Montana. You'd love those places! His channel is Agate Angler.

Yeah, I'll be exploring some more areas along the river, it can be a little tough finding a suitable gravel bar. I watch his video's sometimes! He finds far bigger agates than I do here, but they seem to be mostly chalcedony, whereas there's more carnelian to be found here. Maybe one day I'll get to go to the Yellowstone.
