Doug, you are my hero. I’m 75 years old and saw one of your tube videos about 4 years ago. Got a knife at the hobby shop and apiece of 2x4 and tried a wood spirit. Dull knife and wrong wood = disaster. I kept at it copying some of your carvings and others on utube and started doing my own stuff. I’m not a perfectionist, but I’m good enough for me. Wish I’d discovered this hobby about 60 years ago.

Thank you Doug for sharing your KSAE’s (knowledge, skills, abilities, experiences). I am now the gang leader of ~100 wood spirits. My wife refers to them as ‘Ents’, as a ref to Tolkien, I started naming them and very quickly was brought to reality. Funny story to share: when I first started watching your vids my wife was out of town almost 3 months for family care. Well, I really started to get into it. Each night before retiring I would vacuum up the chips in our family room from learning the wood spirit carving skill. Fast forward ‘t minus’ -30 days and counting a neighbour suggested I hire cleaners to give the house a real cleaning to surprise my wife. Our reunion was good. Months later the cleaning ladies told my wife that after the first cleaning job they thought we had gerbils! They wanted to peek in the spare bedrooms to see where they were. But did not because it was not part of their cleaning regimen. So I started off a gerbil and am working my up to full-fledged beaver thanks to you. Cheers.

Doug, You have created a monster. Thank You, Somehow I found your channel, what a breath of fresh air. I bought some second hand knifes and a couple of v-tools a gouge made a strop the way you showed how. Picked up a 2x4 and started. I'm now buying Basswood. There's no going back. My wife is not happy, I home now making the mess in stead of in the shop. Someday I will carve something you might be able to recognize but until then I'm having fun. Again Thanks, Dutch

I’ve enjoyed all your videos for last cohoe of years now I guess. I’ve carved and sold way over 500 cottonwood bark faces in many galleries and I’ve worn out blades doing chip carvings. That’s almost not an exaggeration. But the simplicity of carving your little men has my interest. I’ve done the hillbilly family but I like just letting each carving become what it does. Your advice is always great and I love the outdoors as well and you have a blend of both on your channel which I love. Carving outdoors is best experience life can offer. Please keep sharing videos. Thanks!

Thank you very much. I have been following you for a long time now. My one shirt I bought from you is about worn out. What you have given me is unexplainable. I now carve a lot that I'm retired and give a lot of mine to friends and family. I am always learning new things and love it. I look at some of the beautiful carvings out there and I'm in awe. Thank you again for all that you have done for me. I will be ordering another shirt. My next trip up I plan to take a detour and go to Chipping Away.

Doug. Thank you for all your work in producing the myriad of extremely informative and fun tutorials. Your patience, teaching methods and skill during the carving sessions was/is/continues to be a source of inspiration to me. I'm just a beginner to carving, and a mildly seasoned woodworker. Making furniture was one thing, but these intimate little people, albeit gnomes or woods folks, etc, look to be like hours of good fun and challenge. I'll miss your continuing videos, and it may give me a chance to catch up, see all you've done to date, sharpen my knives and skills, and away I go! Thanks so much, once again. David Walton, Maine

years ago I asked you if you carved caricatures of girls, you said it was not something you had figured out, my granddaughter was relentless and I carved Little Red Riding Hood, Ella and Anna, Cinderella, Snow White, and her own Grandmother.... I used the plastic characters / dolls for models..... Good advice Doug, the last one was Rapunzel with hair rapping around her from head to tail. I also like your Bushcraft videos and whenever you and Joe get together.

Hey Doug, I've been meaning to thank you recently. I've always had an interest in carving, but I never really knew how to get started and didn't want to just pick up a knife & start carving nothing. Your recent videos were honestly the push I needed! I've watched the whole set a couple of times now, and I've used that knowledge to get some starting equipment, ideas, and guides & books. So far, I've done four projects. First, the 12-pointed star - This one was rough because I had a knife called Beavercraft from Amazon. It was CERTAINLY not sharp enough! Also, got a 2"x2" block from Michaels. It was ROUGH! The cuts were so hard to do, I never felt like I was gliding my blade through like in your videos. So, I bought a Flexcut blade and some certified-for-carving basswood. Did it again with MUCH better results. This was my fourth project. Second, the snowman from your video on January 19th, 2018. He was so much fun to carve! I was following you until the eyes. I thought you said carve them out, as in remove the material, but you meant to shape them as eyes. I ended up using two pieces of green tourmaline for his eyes. Third was your owl video from July 24th, 2019. I loved carving him, as well! Way more entertaining. Anyways, I would love to show you them! I uploaded the images onto a sharing website since I can't send them through KZbin: ibb.co/album/dnGHGF That link is just the pictures of the carvings. Again, thank you so much for the inspiration! I've only done a couple, but I'm absolutely loving it! -Carl
