When I need motivation, I usually watch that part from Legally Blonde where Elle Woods decids to start studying and get her shit together haha I just find it really motivating. Oh, and med school parodies of songs, they are EXCELLENT!

Exercise, yes! I always feel better about everything if I've done some exercise. Like you said, it's not about changing my body, it's just about feeling happier and also for me about trying to have a healthier balance to my life than I have over the past couple of years... I like chocolate & cake, and I sit mostly still all day at work, so getting some exercise just cheers my whole body up a bit. A related tip that I've found for motivating myself is just to get out of the house for a bit. I feel so much worse at the weekends if I stay inside all day, even if I'm staying in doing things I've planned to do, like catching up on KZbin videos, or relaxing in front of the TV. I need to make sure some of my relaxing or general activity happens out of the house, so I get a change of scenery, otherwise I end up in quite a motivation slump.

Your video came at the right time. I'm in the middle of writing my MA thesis and I'm feeling so unmotivated. I'm gonna stop wearing my pajamas and start getting dressed for the day even if I work from home. 😊

Aah a sympathize, I've been there! I'm glad you enjoyed the video ^_^ getting dressed is probably my number one tactic. Good luck with your thesis, I'm sure you'll be awesome.

It's such a careful balance between motivation and pressure and you're right, it's so bad when you beat yourself up when you need to take personal time

I can't even describe how helpful this was. 💛 Never seen a video that made me feel so powerful & calm regarding productivity/deadlines, etc. It's okay, you're in control, you can do this, you can breathe because it's all okay. 💛 (As someone who struggles with anxiety, it's so easy to get lost in your own head.) Also: I'd say you are my rolemodel! I too want to pursue a degree in Classics & knowing you are successful & did it is just so important to me & makes me feel hopeful & optimistic about the future! ☺️

Thank you for posting this. I've been in a terrible spot lately, feeling stagnant. Thank you for reminding me that it's the little things daily that matter. I honestly forget that I have accomplished a lot in life, even if I am needed to take care of my family rather than going back to school. I can't thank you enough.

I study from home and can vouch these tips :) I plan out my week, give myself at least one day off (I actually get more done that way because of feeling the time pressure haha) and write a to-do list every day. Love the idea about writing out your achievements.

Really good advice I really loved the last one. For me I find it motivating to remember why I'm doing the task, today I didn't want to do chemistry which I don't like but I remembered I needed to do it so I can go to university and pursue the life I want. Also if I'm finding something particularly hard I remember all the obstacles I've overcome to even get to this point which were probably much harder than the one I'm facing at that moment and that motivates me because if I could overcome that then there is no way I'm going to give up now.

Thanks so much for this Jean - I find the not beating yourself up part is really important, because if you carry on in that line of thinking, you're more likely to get down in the dumps again, and continue not getting anything done! I also use the pomodoro technique to get me going lots of the time, and use the 5 minute breaks to make tea! x

This is a topic of weekly discussion for me in therapy. I found that getting dressed and not working in my bedroom but in a designated “work station” in the house helps me a lot. I also keep this mantra in mind - it’s VERY cheesy, be prepared- “now that O don’t have to be perfect, I can be good”

This is a great video thank you for sharing. I am studying while working full time and often get really stressed and overwhelmed and when I get overwhelmed I basically stop dead and can't do anything but I am trying some of these methods to be better (eg I had an awful day yesterday and just came home and watched cruft and drank a cider and said I am not worrying about work I will deal with my uni stuff when I am mentally in a better place.)

For me it feels like there are some projects that I can do just fine with only motivation and not much inspiration, like blog posts or painting videos, while other things I have to have inspiration or I can't even put down a word, like my novella. A somewhat related but separate problem is that when a project is really important to me I tend to get like you were saying about wanting it to be perfect and my internal critic shuts me down every time I have an idea of what to write and tells me it isn't good enough. Fortunately the most recent time this happened a week ago I finally managed to push through and let that scene I cared to much about not be perfect the first time through, and am now doing better. And yeah, when I get stuck with my fiction writing my self-esteem tends to get low so it makes me feel better to get other things done like blog posts and videos, and that way I can feel like at least I did something. And then there are a lot of times I get to the end of the day and nothing has been done and I have to fight off telling myself I suck. Thanks for your encouragement!

As always great vid! I’m cynical as well about advice type books but have you read Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert? It focuses on creativity and I think also pulls in motivation and why we write etc. I really enjoyed it! I listened to the audio book and it’s read by Elizabeth Gilbert too xx

Ah yeah I've listened to Big Magic (I think I have a full review of it on my channel), I liked bits of it, particularly the idea that you don't need to suffer to be an artist (that's so important) but overall I didn't fall in love with it as much as The Art of Asking.

I have been having really low energy level in doing whatever I am doing, and that's because I need to work on the coursework about something I really REALLY hate, and I am not proud of what I have been working on... And that affects all my other work as well, yesterday, I basically did nothing but staring at the screen...then I went out for a walk, then came back to staring at the screen, which is not productive at all... any advice??? Love to see these kinds of videos too... Jen yesterday uploaded an organisation videos as well, I see these as a sign that I need to go back to a more organized and productive studying pattern.

All I can say based on experience is that this is always going to happen unfortunately, even if you’re in your dream job or doing a degree you love there will always be a project here or there that you’re not enthusiastic about. Try to think about where that project your essay fits in with your wider goals, so if it’s a piece of coursework remember how important it is to you to finish school or graduate from university and that this will help you towards that so give it your best shot. Also it’s okay to not be proud of every single thing you submit during your studies as long as you try, and remember take pleasure/pride in the things that you do enjoy and that make it all worthwhile. Good luck!
