In regards to tip #1: on the weekends, I used to not leave my flat, which was a big problem and led to me not doing any work! what I found really helpful was not purchasing any instant coffee or milk (cuz I can't drink breakfast tea without milk), and this meant that I needed to leave the house to caffinate myself. This has been SO helpful because it means that at least once a day, I go outside. It's super helpful for my motivation, I can't even tell you!! (not the best for my bank balance because I drink a lot of tea and coffee, but baby steps!)

Great tips - and I'm loving the Mike Falzone outdoor vlog vibes! My sticking point is always getting started in the first place, and one of the best way s to get around that is to start a 20 minute timer and use that as a starting point. Usually by the time I've done 20 minutes I'm in work mode and don't want to stop anyway. Or if starting a timer is hard enough by itself, I make a cup of tea and get started with that.

Sometimes when I feel like my mind is about to explode because of all the information or the research that I have recently been doing, I turn off everything and take a nap for about half an hour or so. It's really revitalising and it makes me feel like I take good care of myself. So, I get extra motivated to continue my studies.

I'm asthmatic too!! :D I've found that bicycling does not trigger my asthma, and it's been amazing to keep moving for hours at a time. Biked 30 miles last Saturday! Whereas after ten minutes of jogging I'm doubled over wheezing, drooling, all the real pretty stuff.

Another solid set of tips. I think some people really overlook the mental benefits of exercise. It's great for de-stressing plus you just sleep so much better. I went through a period where I would wake up several times during the night. Then I started running (which I need to start doing again) and I slept all the way through the night. It really does help you relax.

Perfect timing once again! I have exams the next two weeks and I just made my schedule and I want to cry, it's so much. I'll have to basically live in the library. Apparently someone thought it was okay to assign us three 1000-word essays for a take home exam that we only get a week for, while ALSO having to study for regular exams. WHY?! Needless to say, there is going to be some stress.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I NEEDED THIS VIDEO SO MUCH! My 14 final exams start in a week so it is hard to relax... The only thing that calms me down and helps me stop thinking about things that stress me out is SINGING. I walk about an hour a day to go to work of Uni and even though sometimes people might think I'm crazy I just sing :) (I feel like it helps a lot with breathing) I really enjoy your videos! Thank you for always making me smile before any exam :)

I always listen to music while working or studying, often times classical but mostly filmmusic (my favourite music) and I wish I had some beautiful hills like that near me, looks lovely

I agree with all these tips, especially not eating while I study or do school work. Whenever I get lunch or dinner I just talk to my roommate or watch Netflix for about an hour. Thank you for the great video and I love the scenery behind you :)

I think Spotify is fantastic for classical music playlists. I try and use their reading soundtracks when writing essays as they're especially claiming. Thank you so much for sharing this, I'm definitely going to be implementing these tips when I take my study breaks.

definitely, going outside and geting some fresh air is the best thing I can do when I'm stressed. And also just doing something completely different from what you study. Sport is always a good option or also planning a nice meal and taking time to buy groceries for it and preparing it. Maybe inviting friends over for dinner. I also tend to allow myself these little breaks where I can distract myself, to a certain extent though. Happy Birthday by the way! You have been such an inspiring and brilliant creator here on this platform. And you were among others one of the reason why I started youtube myself! I look forward to seeing more videos of yours, especially about academia, your research field and so on... =)

This was SO helpful. I personally find listening to video game soundtracks very relaxing, since I also can't listen to music with words when I'm trying to do something. So I turn to those, which are both beautiful and motivating. I highly recommend the soundtracks from 'Heavy Rain' and 'Beyond Two Souls.'

Hooray for this video Jean! I listen to classical music too, especially Lucovido Einuadi. Headspace is a good meditation app, I used to subscribe but you can get the first ten episodes for free (and then go back over them) which is what I do now. I find doing yoga or getting absorbed in the kitchen is a great way to switch off as well. Xx

also, with taking a break: I do 40 minutes work, five minutes break, twice a work session. Then I do a long break. then I'll go back and do another cycle. it's all about finding your rhythm, and your own time schedule. :)

Thank you so much for sharing these tips! I have graduated from college, but these will definitely come in handy as I am actively writing fiction. I do agree that walks are really helpful. I find music to be really relaxing, but I have to work in silence, otherwise I will have difficulty concentrating. Also, if you do not upload a video, I want to wish you a very happy birthday! :) -Josh

I find the Andrew Johnson relaxation and meditation apps really good. Different ones for naps, relaxation, deep sleep and even habit changing (quitting drinking, losing weight etc). Most of them are free and the pay ones are a couple of pounds. Good luck with the meditation :)

Beautiful walk. I will be using these to wrote my essays this week! I would also suggest if you like classical but are unsure as to specific genres within classical that you enjoy then try the site called 8tracks. You can search by genre and by mood so you have a bit more control than the youtube playlists!

I love these tips! I especially like the idea of just getting outside and getting some fresh air, that's something I do a lot during exam periods. I'm so nervous - I'm starting an MA in the UK next year after a) being Canadian and b) having taken a year off to work, and this'll be a program that's only a year with work placements and dissertations and exhibit planning, so I'm going to need all the tips and help against procrastination I can get! :P

Great video Jean. I talk about the importance of taking a break from studying in my most recent video about dealing with a PhD slump too. Taking a break from studying is so, so important to maintain motivation and just generally remain sane. Hope your PhD is going well so far. How are you coping with the long-distance? Are you studying part-time?

If you're looking to get into meditation, I'd really recommend you look up the three minute breathing space exercise! I have MBCT and it's one my therapist taught me that's really helped, but it's also crossing over into the mainstream mindfulness sphere as well. There's a website called Frantic World that explains it all (as well as lots of other mindfulness tips) :)
