I find it interesting that CatDog's design made it hard for the team to animate them and get them working in a game, and how around two decades later Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl's developers were able to use that design in a way that lent the duo to becoming the best fighters on the roster.
@andykishore2 жыл бұрын
That's a very good point. The video games Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway use 3D models of CatDog and are able to work just fine.
@ClassicGamer1983 Жыл бұрын
It was harder to animate stuff in the PS1 era, that's why a lot of it's games animations haven't aged well, these days most youtubers can do good animations.

A MASSIVE shame the game wasn't leaked, as I'm sure some homebrew developmer would be willing to finish it. Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention. I love Catdog. I even have a headrest pillow shaped like him, er... I mean them. Shame I never even heard of this game until now. Always figured the character design would not let the game exists. I grew up on the Rugrats PS1 games, all four were my childhood, even if I didn't like the France one much, so I would have loved this.

Very good watch! Although it's disappointing we don't have concrete answers or footage/screenshots, it's interesting to see the working environment and how the game got abandoned and lost. Here's hoping this video will lead to more answers! And thank you for spreading the word on it's existence!

Hearing about how terraglyph operated gave me vibes of Hi-Tech Expressions, another licensed game developer from earlier in the 90s. Their employees were mostly local musicians, some of which never even touched a computer ever before working on their first games, their library had a mixed critical reception, and they just barely lasted about six years. And yet they managed to work on MASSIVE licenses; Disney, Sesame Street, Barbie, even ports of Mega Man and Street Fighter. It just makes me wonder if HTC, and even other licensed game devs of that era, also did the "get as much licensing investments asap" process that Terraglyph was doing. And like Terraglyph, Hi-Tech also had multiple unreleased/lost games before they shut down as well, some of which were even fully finished and ready for release. Maybe just me, but at the very least I wouldn't be surprised if Terra wasn't the only ones operating that way.

Awesome documentary! About the two different box arts- I'm fairly certain the one in the advertisement was a prototype/mock-up cover. It hadn't been finalized yet. The second one probably would've been the final had it gotten released. The bare bones listings and developer mix-ups remind me a lot of the situation with the EEnE "Junkyard Scramble" game that eventually became Jawbreakers for the GBA. Development was rocky and preorders had a developer listed that wasn't set in stone, thus no ex-employee from that studio knew anything about it. Glad that's not the case with the preview and Terraglyph. Can't wait for the video on Backlot Party and I hope gameplay or a playable version of Saving Mean Bob sees the light of day soon.
@CartoonReview2 жыл бұрын
I like your theory about the box arts! A prototype and final version would make a lot of sense, especially because the first box art seems a lot more simplistic
@joannamother24322 жыл бұрын
I've done tons of research on Carnivale; the two games for it and the film itself. It's a fascinating film that deserved much better. Hearing that Terraglyph with this game was involved immediately made me feel somewhat validated. Super awesome video, you did a great job.

@drewbarton1962 жыл бұрын
Hmm... actually how would Terraglyph translate CatDog, themselves, as a playable character in a PS1 video game? I think its admirable that Jeff wanted to be faithful to how CatDog was animated in their show but again it was a license game made for the PS1, a console that has limitations. Then again there was that Looney Tunes game Sheep Raider that was able do squash and stretch despite being a PS1 game. But like you mentioned in the video Terraglyph had money issues meaning Saving Mean Bob might had a limited budget and wasn't really a top priority for them.
@CartoonReview2 жыл бұрын
I think the fact that they wanted to get that squash & stretch animation AND have both Cat and Dog be playable individually was just too much for this game. Their ambition to have a two-player mode where players could control each character at the same time sounds like something that wouldn't have been possible to truly achieve until recent times
@drewbarton1962 жыл бұрын
@@CartoonReview Crap forgot about the two player aspect. And yeah too difficult. I can't think of any video game that tries to do that, unless it might be a mini game in a party game. But I do remember playing an arcade style game made by a college student in which it requires 3 players. First, the players played 3 separate characters then the next level the characters are mash together and the players take control certain movements: one controls left, one controls right, and one push the jump button.

Thank you for trying to find answers on this mysterious game. I came across this listing back in during the Gamecube era while searching IGN and it at the time had the 2nd box art from the fansite interview. For 17 years I thought back to what was that game about, even as recent as in December 2022. I did mention the game once in 2021 and showed a screenshot of the box art in the NASB Discord Server to people. No one knew what this mysterious cancelled game was. The only thing I knew was it was for the PS1 and it was about CatDog looking for Dog's Mean Bob action figure. There is not full answers but it is new info we didn't know before. It is still a victory in my opinion.

Wow! That is one spectacular documentary. I can relate to the frustrations of researching and reaching dead ends. A few years ago, I tried to look up any additional info on one of the Zelda CD-i games (Zelda's Adventure). I didn't find much except for an unsecured article and a positive magazine review published in the UK. I'm still interested in finding out more, albeit not as much. My attention has shifted to a dissolved UK studio, Asylum Entertainment Ltd. I own two games they made (Sabrina and Powerpuff Girls on PS1), both of which are terrible, and I'm intrigued to research their development.

What I don’t get about the 32 bit era is, whereas the 8 and 16 bit eras had no shortage of kids games even in the early years, (not counting Japan exclusives) why did it take the PlayStation, one of the most successful consoles EVER, to get a sizeable amount of games based on kid-targeted IPs? It got a Mickey Mouse game within its first year on the market but it was a PAL exclusive. Only the outdated-by-this-point 16 bit consoles got a Toy Story game. We did get a few kids games here and there like ReBoot, Casper and Blazing Dragons but there were few and far between. The 2 major standout releases were Space Jam and Hercules, knowing how big the movies they are based on are, but they were still among a very small few of this game category! It wasn’t until after the release of the console’s A Bug’s Life game that we got MANY games based on kids movies and TV shows! Personally, I think at the very least, on the Disney and Nickelodeon sides of things respectively, Toy Story and Aaahh!!! Real Monsters both should’ve been released on the PlayStation as well as the 16 bit Genesis and SNES. They might’ve hurt the PlayStation’s reputation as a 3D console but how come Rayman was released for that console with no issues? Had the 2 licensed games I speak of each have been released on PlayStation as well as 16 bit consoles, I wouldn’t mind if they were each just the SNES version at Genesis resolution with a CD soundtrack and FMV clips from the corresponding source material! Being a Sega loyalist, I went for a Saturn instead of a Genesis back in the day and seeing as I was 7 going on 8, I just HAD TO question “Where are the Disney games? Where’s the new Sonic game?” Yeah, the Saturn was VERY badly handled outside Japan. I REALLY wish Sega of Japan and Sega of America were able to work together better!

Also, isn't it a bit ironic how those sources conflicted whether this game was going to be 1-Player or 2-Player?
