Someone else mentioned it but that honestly sounds like a good villain idea. A character who thought he did everything through hard work, realises that none of his achievements were his own. Just as they're about to achieve their goal it's revealed that he has an OP bloodline and his legendary father was manipulating everything to go his way. He's seen as fraud, his friends lose trust in him, he's banned from receiving his dream title and everyone turns their backs on him. Angered, he makes a plan to destroy all those who turned on him. Honestly a great villain origin story and he could come into conflict with the protagonist who was able to achieve his dream with hard work.

Anime in general seems to be fond of the secret prince sort of trope. Hardly anyone comes from a regular family getting good at the regular techniques until they come out on top it's always a super powerful family line and the most special powers that no one could compete with. It really does take away from the story when all the best and most powerful have to come from a Neverending dynasty that everyone just has to learn to bow to each generation.

You may be interested in the webcomic UnOrdinary then. Basically, its set in a world where almost everyone has superpowers and the world is run on a Social Darwinist hierarchy. Those without powers are referred to as 'Cripples' and live on the bottom rung, unable to defend themselves from those with powers. The main protagonist, John, is one such character, and is seemingly a badass normal who refuses to let those with powers in his school push him around. He even manages to win the friendship of the strongest girl there, due to impressing her with his refusal to not let the hierarchy rule his life. However, and these are spoilers... In truth, he isn't a cripple, but in fact has the power to copy the powers of other people and use them to even greater effect, up to 4 powers at a time even. In his previous school, he was originally assumed to be powerless, but was in fact a late bloomer, and when he finally discovered his power he trained and used it to get revenge on those who hurt him and his friends, but then took it too far and began beating down on anyone who looked at him funny, to the point that his friends had to try and get him to stop. He's put to traumatic rehabilitation after the fact (which basically amounts to mind raping him with visions of the pain he inflicted on others), leaving him a self loathing wreck in the present day who enrolled in his new school as a cripple as a means to punish himself and distance himself from his past. Unfortunately, other people figure out the truth, and try to force John back into the hierarchy, unleashing a campaign of bullying and torments that separates him from his girlfriend (as she gets expelled briefly thanks to them), loses his means of contacting his loved ones, and physical abuse. As the situation leads up, John flips the script, dawns an alter ego identity and launches a campaign of destruction to get them off his back, initially wanting to level the playing field and keep people from hurting each other, but by the end, he's ended up falling back into being the monster, only this time worse. His friend manages to snap him out of it, and he's going through a redemption arc again, a better one. Just thought I mentioned it, since it has a lot of similarities to your idea, the main character who's initially presented as the everyman is actually a super powered badass, only this time, the setting, his life, and the story show why he'd hide that, making it a point to show him being a self loathing, hypocritical, and damaged youth who struggles a lot with his anger and has to constantly fight to keep himself from becoming worse than what he hates.

This is one of the reasons why I love the Rune Factory games. You're not some messiah destined for greatness, you're just a random person capable of talking with nature who became a victim of circumstance. Edit: Okay, Raguna was implied to be related to the prince but they don't go beyond that and nothing is done with it. The others end up in their respective towns via a mission or unfortunate circumstances. But they're still not chosen ones or anything.

@@buccham6354 While the protagonists are Earthmates, the games do say that the only perks are communicating with nature and a few exclusive spells that you never really use outside of certain plot moments. They're never used to explain your ability to combat monsters. Also, they make you the prince/princess in 4 not because you're important, but because of a mishap and the actual prince decides to let it slide because he'd rather focus on his trade business than his responsibilities. In fact, Arthur does say your power as prince/princess only applies to Selphia. The games make it abundantly clear that you're never the only Earthmate out there, so its not like you're a one in a million. The only RF protagonist you can call "important" is Raguna because he's secretly the prince, but nothing is done with that.

But we know from Ethelberd that there are a bunch of them given that he brags about slaughtering a lot. Some like Kyle and Lest/Frey show up because of a mission rather than destiny, and others like Aden and Sonja were just really unlucky with circumstances.

Asta isn't really a good example. The only reason he can use the anti magic swords is because he trained his body to compensate for his lack of magic. Most mages in Black Clover don't train their bodies and focus on their magic instead, with few exceptions like say, Yami. So yeah, Asta's hard work did pay off.

It's funny but reflects both life and dramatic storytelling. We are all privileged in some way others may not be. Having an able body, for example. That's why it's important to be grateful for your blessings, and at the same time compassionate to those who have less or are marginalized. Many fans confuse the main theme of a lot of shounen anime as something akin to "you can accomplish anything no matter who you are if you work hard enough and decide your own destiny". And I get it; I believe it comes from the desire to relate to the protagonist and be inspired from them to rise above your circumstances. But in actually, the theme is generally "if you don't give up and try your best, no matter who you are, eventually things will work out for the better, even if it may not be how you originally envisioned it". This is not a bad thing. This theme is likewise inspiring, and I think more people can find it applicable to them. This is Naruto, for example. Naruto's ninja way was to never give up. And he never betrayed that. It showed beautifully in contrast to Rock Lee, who's motto was "if you are at a disadvantage or fall, work even harder to achieve what you want". Naruto won against Neiji (with thanks to his local resident fox) where Rock Lee never could no matter how hard he tried. Lee lost to Gaara as well. I think this is realistic. After all, not all of us can become the best just by working hard. But Lee never needed or wanted to be hokage (aka the strongest). Yeah, he wanted to beat Neiji but that was merely a goal to strive for- a means to the end of doing everything he could to better himself. And he did just that, became a great ninja, and achieved his own happiness. Lastly, Neiji was obsessed with destiny as an excuse for giving up on himself. This went against everything Naruto stood for, so it makes sense that Naruto would be the one to teach him the lesson and to free him.

They're still relatable in other ways (Peter's broke and Clark has issues regarding how much he fits in), but they're not supposed to be seen as true underdogs in the same way.

So as far as the anime is concerned (no manga spoilers please) Naruto - supposed to have come from nothing but was born to succeed Yuno (Black Clover) - was praised as being a commoner/peasant orphan who somehow rivaled even the royals when it came to magic power. Turned out he was a royal from another country all along

Prince Yuno has a nice ring to it. He always had that air of royalty. More than all of those annoying stuck-up nobles in Black Clover. I didn't know he was royalty, and I haven't been able to get caught up since the end of the Demon King arc, but when I think about it, it's actually not surprising. I wanted to be in denial when I read that, but it's easy to accept even if I got kinda spoiled haha. I'll probably forget by the time I get to watching again anyway 🤣 And hopefully stay caught up so I don't get spoiled on anything else.

The Yuno point I don’t really think is much a point. While I don’t love black clover from what I saw up t’il it was revealed he was a prince he was already shown to be extremely privileged. But he still( from what I’ve seen) worked hard and still went through hardship. Same applies to Naruto for me. While he was “destined” to become that strong it doesn’t just get rid of the fact that he still went through extreme hardships and wasn’t aware of the reincarnation of Ashura.

Even though he was ultimately privileged, Yuno still put in effort and trained when he was young (as evident by his "talent and digilent effort" line in the first chapter of the manga) which is more than what a lot of the nobles around the start of Black Clover did.

That's not true. The main character is a person placed in extraordinary circumstances and has interesting reactions and growth due to those circumstances. Realistically Naruto could've been about any of the Konoha 11 and it could be written to be interesting.

I feel like this was inspired by Naruto and Sasuke. A couple of shinobis that descend from ancient powerful bloodlines, cursed with extra power and also happen to be reincarnated demigods. It's impressive how Sakura was able to keep up as much as she did.
