I am American, but I have to say, I think part of the reason the US states might be easier is because they have very distinct shapes, save a few of them. Many of the counties to me seem like even if you know the approximate area it should be in, it would be easy to accidentally pick one of the shapes next door.
@ddemaine6 жыл бұрын
@Edwin Cheesecake The current set-up with ceremonial counties harks back to before 1974-1996; prior to that era, there was a distinction between geographical counties and council areas. "Ceremonial counties" in England are so called, because they are legally the lieutancy areas for the crown in the nation. They are also serve as the de facto geographical counties of England (somebody from Runcorn would they are from Cheshire rather than Halton; or a person from Rochester would say Kent, rather than Medway). As such, local authority areas often take their names from the ceremonial counties, even being co-extensive with them.

@littlesmew Not a county, the town in which the college is located. The original founder of the state was a Quaker, and early county names were either English or Indian. Some of my ancestors came over in the first year of the colony; They were Quakers from Devon, but you go back a few more generations and suddenly we've got a bunch of Welsh. At that point genealogy goes sideways, since you're getting back to a time when there were no last names and everyone was something ap (son of) someone, or verch (daughter of) someone, and they all seem to be named either Llwellyn or Evan. Frontier during the Revolution was just over the Susquehanna River, so there are western counties named after Adams, Washington, Franklin, etc.

@chrislyne3776 жыл бұрын
There are only 2 these days: the Duchy of Lancaster and the Duchy of Cornwall. The former is the private estate of the monarch who is the Duke (not Dutchess) of Lancaster. The latter is the private estate of the Prince of Wales and provides him an income so as to not be reliant on the Crown. Both duchies are held in trust and so the assets and incomes are not technically the property of whomever holds these positions. There are many other Dukedoms but these are ceremonial titles not tied to lands in the same way as the duchies.

The map includes modern boundaries, after several reorganisations since county boundaries began being altered in the 19th century. Yorkshire was the largest traditional county. It was sub-divided, for some purposes, into three ridings - north, west and east. The ridings became administrative counties in 1889. In 1974 a new system of metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties moved things around and there were further changes in 1996 when Humberside was broken up and an East Riding of Yorkshire re-emerged. The precise boundaries of areas, even with the same or similar names, were not necessarily the same over time.

I got London right. It had a dot on it. Missed all the rest.

I heard so much about the "Isle of Man". Is that not have the same status as "Isle of Wright"? Thanks this was fun.

No the Isle of Wight is part of England, Mann is a Crown Dependency and doesn't belong to any of the 4 UK states. Jersey and Guernsey and the rest of the Channel Islands have the same status where the queen is the Duke of Normandy.

I didn't even attempt this! I'm pretty sure I wouldn't do as well on the counties of my state, but I'm going to try it!

Just did my own state. Lived here most of my life. Only got 21/93! But of those, only 1 was a guess. I knew the other 20, whoop-dee-doo! ( I also had no idea there were 93 counties in my state!)

Many of the county names were familiar. I might have got London, but not likely any of the others except on pure luck.

Now that you've schooled me once, I'll go try and report back! Ha

24/48 but to be fair, this was the first pass after one view of your video and having next to no idea where anything but London and Yorkshire might be! Ha.
