Finding the Best ARPG Ever Made: Hero Siege

Hero Siege is one of those ARPGs that looks the look, it sounds the sound, but does it walk the walk? In my opinion, it's more like it's crawling the crawl, but can it muster enough interesting gameplay to break ahead of all the other games we've looked at? Can it use enough Diablo 2 references to be possibly considered the Best ARPG Ever Made? I'll let you know, you just have to watch the whole 11 minute video, enjoy.

What i find really weird about this game is that it first released as a roguelite - no open world, no skill trees, no levels, no inventory, no quests, etc. But then one day devs were like - fuck it, were making an ARPG now - and completely changed how the game works. In fact that Relics system (9:08), as well as jumping mechanics, are a leftover from the times when the game was a roguelite.

The moment Diablo 3 came out the more Hero Siege tried to be Pixel Diablo 3. It never did anything unique and just chased shadows.

Hero Siege has disappointed me every update they continue to push out. In season 13 I think they turned everything into a damage sponge and the game for me has been extremely tedious to even attempt to play. They also released a paid dlc class that is worse than every other class in the game. I forgot to mention they also nerfed the amount of xp you get and I believe the game took 4x as long as it used to

@@seer6251 Not at all, everything you've said is justified and I hate the monetization system in this game. It's basically a free to play game hiding behind a super cheap price. It does feel like wasted potential because it looks really nice but it's like a colorful balloon, pretty on the outside but empty on the inside. I'm much more of a fan of grim dawn and after learning about things like diablo 2 mod for it I'm going back to it. Cheers

Oh boy, this game. You can find screenshots of the Panic Art Studio's CEO saying such wonderful things as: "Lets f@#$ing murder all these pieces of s#@%" and "I'm gonna make sure my every investment kills as many of these animals as possible" in reference to immigrants and leftists. Thankfully Steam was generous enough to let me refund the game after providing said screenshots. Even disregarding that, over time the D2 references in this game started to feel less like a love letter and more like lazy plagiarism. I'd recommend every other ARPG you've reviewed, then a pile of koala crap, before Hero Siege.

A neat ARPG you might want to try is Shining Soul 2 on the GBA. It's simple and stripped down, but I got seriously addicted to it. It had very clear diablo inspirations

Hey Seer! Since your playing every ARPG ever made I'm here to mention you'll be forced to emulate Record of Lodoss War for Dreamcast. I think you'll like it as magic sucks so Chad melee build is the literal only way to play, it has a unique upgrade systsem that makes it so currency is never wasted and is a pretty difficult game.

Loving your work Seer. After seeing the video on Borderlands, I wonder if something like Nioh would count as an ARPG. Personally Nioh 2 is my favorite ARPG, since there is a lot of fun stuff you can do build wise, but you also can compensate for anything with mechanical skill if you're good enough.

One of my favorite ARPG's to play, some of the things you seem to complain about i seem to enjoy but to each his own. i could level to 100 in a day really. They did just release 2.0 which change about of things even graphics. The inventory is now a drag and drop like D2 is etc. i really liked D2 which is probably why i like this game cause i can play it on my phone.

Haven't tried it on PC, but did on mobile. I thought it was a fun and compact arpg with great depth. I also like how there's lots of variety in combat, and the end game is just as fun as tactical roguelikes like nuclear throne and isn't just a flashy mess where you can't distinguish anything. I liked that. I thought it was perfect. But yeah, I dropped it because there are quite a lot of stuff you had to pay for and the mobile version became a bad and unoptimized port of the pc version.

The owner/CEO of Hero Siege could fill another five minutes of this video on his own as well. I have over a thousand hours in HS, and dealing with Elias was the last straw to finally quit that terrible game. (PAS = Piled Azzloads of Shiet)

This game was a prototype Vampire Survivors at first; a fun - albeit hard - time killer with lots of charm. Waves of enemies, traps, insane weapons, addictive loot system, simple progression. In fact when I tried VS I instantly got hooked because it reminded me of Hero Siege. Then out of nowhere the developer wanted pixel Diablo 2 so that's what we got. Then wanted pixel Diablo 3. Plus he got greedy with tons of dlc, bans and personal insults, but that's another topic entirely. You said you like to "run and shoot bombs", well, 100 years ago this was exactly that. Whatever the case, the game I paid for doesn't exist anymore lol.

@@seer6251 Dont do dins curse, do dins legacy, its the updates sequal ! :D To eleborate: They made a game called Depths of Despair, which became Din's Curse, and then that became Din's Legacy. They are all basically building on the previous entry using the same engine. Din's legacy has everything in Din's curse but more.

Oh hey you referenced an old guide of mine probably! I wrote the first english guide for one of the classes in the game many years ago when it was a roguelite (The attribute system is reminiscent of that.) I used to love this game, but there were some really unpleasant patches in it's history (the patch that introduced resources to every class but didn't have ways to get mana/regen.) Also the creator of the game is an out-and-unabashed racist and the community sadly reflects that :(
