Grim Dawn is one of the best ARPGS released in the last five years, and it could seriously be one of the best ARPGS ever made. It's one of only three to release in that time, but regardless it boasts fun gameplay, an interesting setting, and Grobles. So at least the gameplay and the setting are good.
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed, and if you did, please Like, Share, Comment and Subscribe! Many (and I mean so many) more videos to come!
And as always, an absolutely unstoppable THANK YOU to my Patrons. Your generosity is absolutely BONKERS! / seergames

The map gets better the more you play, you realize there’s secrets, little areas you missed and they stay remain on subsequent playthroughs. You can also do really entertaining things like skip the entire first act, kill the second act boss and be at Homestead before deciding to head to Burrwich. Currently sitting at 1k hours on Steam with this beast, and I’ve still not done everything.

Why is this so common?? I had the exact same thing happen to me... I bought the game a few years back, leveled a character to lvl 25 and just abandoned the game for whatever reason. Then, recently, I played a small CRPG game called Ember, which admittedly was a short bt ok game, so when I was done I wanted something similar and thought I hadn't really given GD much of a chance and started playing it again... That was a month or 2 ago, and now I have 300+ hours of gameplay, wtf! I absolutely love it! PS: I played PoE but didn't not like the endgame stuff at all, as I found it too hard and a hella punishing. I also really hated the elitist community defending the dramatic difficulty curve for the casual players - this was ages ago, so maybe it's different now. This is completely absent in GD. All discussions I've had so far have been positive, a-hole free. The way you want to play and prioritize is your business and the game allows it.

I actually LIKE the map. Something not mentioned in the video is that the world is absolutely full of secret areas not obvious by blindly following the minimap. Including classic stuff like being able to go behind waterfalls. There's also more verticality than in most ARPGs, so the world feels less flat and more like a real place. There's something to be said about scale too, if you find a city for example, it's a CITY, not just a few dinky buildings.

Hard disagree on green being less interesting. The Monster Infrequent (MI) is the best rare/item system in any ARPG IMO (you use loot filter to hide all normal rares/greens anyway). It combines unique items having a set of build defining mods while having the rare system of random prefix/suffix. + and they are target farmable. So you if your build needs specific MI you can easily find one that has the unique mods you need, but it takes a while to find a perfect one as the rare mods are random. And there are tons of those for every skill.
@StonedDragons
@StonedDragons Жыл бұрын
Fortunately it also has a very good loot filtering system there, playing a necro/shaman full pet build, never want to smack a monster yourself? Tell it to only show items that are either uniques or with pet bonuses. Going an inquisitor/demolitionist build and want to max out that fire damage? (I LOVE this build btw, twin pistols, bursting rounds, everything dies.) search fire items or those that buff class abilities.

Green items actually have more nuances than what you have described in the video, there are these things called "Monster Infrequents", or MI's, which are basically a special class of green items that a number of drop their own unique MI's that isn't dropped by anyone else, and these MIs often have mods that are not easily found anywhere else, or just outright don't exist in other rarities, such as, for example, reducing cooldown of a certain skill, or belts that increases all skills of a certain mastery (which doesn't exist on a belt) or specific elemental conversions that is otherwise hard to get or awkward to use as they may break your set effects or something along those lines.

Grim Dawns after Diablo 2 for me for my favorite ARPGs. After you get some time hunting Nemesis's (they can drop some good good), I think you will like the rep system more. Also, there are on the last tab of the rep vendors, Writs(might be different name) that can double Rep Gain, they are transferable to other characters, so you can buff rep gain per faction on other characters and after first Rep Table Quest Grind, on other characters, you can just do the main and side quests and kill monsters mostly to max or nearly max out the friendly factions. Nemesis's can drop the enemy faction versions, which is nice. Also, I feel items in GD are way more awesome then you let on. Some Purple items(some blues and greens too), completely change skill elemental properties and can really change up builds. I feel you though that it makes you need to check the Grim Calc site whenever you wana make a character, because you might be able to change 3 moves to the element you want, so that ight change what classes you pick for your character some times. Also, I love the devotion system, it gets a bit repetitive after multiple characters, but it does feel good when you finish a constellation that gives a big boost feel really good on your character. Also the big dungeons are pretty fun.

Bounties are a relic of early access. It was "temporary endgame repeatable content" to give players something to do and build reputation. But now, you don't really need to grind reputation: they can all be increased (quite fast) by killing a specific ennemy type. So yeah, bounties are outdated, but it was a welcomed temporary solution to keep players busy during development. GD is the best. It's entirely designed to be fun, which sadly can't be said for "multiplayer oriented" arpg. Which is why I am kind of dreading the fact Last Epoch seems to be going really hard on it's soon to be multiplayer...
@TheArnoldification

@helios1087
@helios1087 Жыл бұрын
Also you can get a lot of rep by just simply progressing the plot and doing side quests. After that - there are mandates that give extra rep and by maxing out reputation you can buy super mandates that has even bigger rep multiplier and it can be shared between characters (which is the point). Grinding Cronley gang and Kymon's/Order rep is a bitch though, but when you unlock nemeses you can hunt them for warrants that work the same as super mandates.

@@TheArnoldification It's not a job at PoE in particular. I dislike the game design implications of making competitive multiplayer ARPG. PoE is certainly an offender, but it's one among many. That's a nice video, and a pretty accurate summary of the early experience of Grim Dawn. I hope you revisit this one later, after you get a lot more hours in, and have explored some of the end-game marvels that this game has: nemesis bosses, rogue-like dungeons, crucible & shattered realm arenas, secret & celestial bosses, etc. Many things change in the end game: getting reputation is easy on the harder difficulties so you can ignore bounties, and green items with good affixes become some of the best items you can hope to find. Looking forward for the next video in the series :)

I actually really liked the layout of the world and felt like the random obstructions made going through the same static map more interesting on subsequent playthroughs - forcing me to find alternative paths and encouraging exploration. My biggest gripe with the game is probably the dulled colours combined with the grim tone and aesthetic, but what was I expecting eh? The devs/artists did a great job regardless and I feel like they accomplished what they set out to do with the setting. I love the class system a lot, so much experimentation possible. Throwing grenados and canister bombs with the demolitionist is just so damn satisfying - particularly with the ragdolling enemies. Explosions and big hits feel so good. It really is fantastic and one of the best of the genre. My only complaint is that the pacing drags a bit after you defeat Cronely. Once you reach Homestead it gets real good again, and both expansions are absolute winners. Itemization is great, combat is chunky and satisfying, and the amount of Ultimate-viable character builds is staggering. Great balance overall with a few hiccups here and there. This is probably my #1, bare minimum Top 3 ARPG title/franchise right now. I love the class system, I love the setting, and I love the general aesthetic of pretty much everything included. I have owned it since the original release, and have all the DLCs as well. What it does, it does perfectly, and compared to all the modern titles it competes with, I have barely, if ever, found a competitor that really rivals it. Ironically, also in my Top 3 would be Titan Quest, which is just the rough draft of this game's class/skill system, but set in Angient Greek Mythology.

Among all that I didn't like there were some map constraints, and also a bug with the loot. Loved the fact that a caster class wasn't forced to wear robes On the other hand, I loved Grim Dawn from the start and each new play with a different class, just makes me love it evern more

I love this game. I actually liked the world. I like the fact that it isn't procedurally generated. The dungeons feel like they're laid out to actually be interesting rather than just glorified arenas to rip and tear through. The world is fun to explore. Though I wish they'd make the map transparent so I could walk around while having the map open to plan out my pathing more easily. If you just use the map you won't have any trouble finding your way around the somewhat labyrinthian map layouts. They just need to make that shit transparent.

An excellent video, perfectly balanced like the first nemisis that most players run into.. :D Here's a few extra things to go with the awesome video; 1. The reputation bonuses and writs/mandates you can buy from faction vendors that boost the gains for current and other characters, including the random dropped writs/mandates for enemy factions to help them cheeky nemisis bosses spice your world up before your ready. (You also gain reputation for killing opposing faction heroes and bosses from memory, which is nice and worth noting. Reputation carries over between difficulties) 2. The augments that can only be obtained from faction vendors are huge for higher difficulties when balancing out builds for resistances. Craftable components and purchasable augments from faction vendors are something everyone should at least be aware of for ultimate difficulty. 3. The optional hidden super bosses that take serious time and commitment to defeat. It's been a while I think there's 4? Not recommended for casual players. Yeah good luck with those... >:D 4. The rogue like skeleton key dungeons are a blast and a serious challenge, recommended for levelling/gearing characters too. (even more fun to complete with friends) 5. There are secret areas that while most are trivial, some are pretty awesome. 6. The loot filter probably overlooked as a standard nowadays but it is still pretty good, especially in later stages. 7. It has coop! (all parties need to have the same dlc in order to play together if memory serves me well) Love your content and super happy you found time for this gem of a game!

The biggest improvement this game made over Titan Quest in my opinion was RADICALLY increasing the speed of character development. In Titan Quest your characters levelled up at a glacial pace, taking maybe 1-1 1/2 hours of hard grind to gain a single level, and the need to pile ever-increasing amounts of your limited supply of skill points into increasing your mastery before you were allowed to buy a new skill (rapidly going up to first six and then eight aka. 3 entire levels' worth at the highest tier) sucked balls, meaning you could spend hours of gametime without being able to make a single meaningful addition to your character's skill set. In Grim Dawn you level up more than TWICE as fast as in Titan Quest, and the cost to unlock the next tier of skills on your mastery tree didn't go higher than a mere 5 points until near the very top, meaning you could acquire a new skill every couple of hours if you wanted. HUGE upgrade.

Disagree with some of your points. It's true that green items shits out the ass of every mobs in the game but the item design are by far the most fun and complexe I ever seen in an arpg. I don't know if you made it to endgame but when you start digging into those purple items and understanding damage conversion the whole game becomes a mine of possibilities. Reputation also isn't meant to do bounties, you just do your normal playthrough through veteran, elite and ultimate difficulties and killing mobs that gives reputation for every factions actually puts you near the top at the end, unlocking all the cool loot as you progress.

I actually love the maps in this game. I feel like them being annoying to navigate actually helps with the world building and it forces you to explore further off the beaten path rather than just running to the end. It’s always fun when you come across a cave and you aren’t sure if it will be a system of tunnels that lead all across the map or a nest filled with monsters and a boss. Also I know Malmouth is super annoying for a lot of people but I did also kinda like it because I can’t remember the last ARPG I played that had an urban city-like environment where you weave in, out, and around buildings. Sure it can make navigation confusing but I still like it, or at least appreciate it. Also you forgot to mention the built in loot filter!!! It is so insanely useful especially considering how many greens drop compared to TQ. The game has so many QoL features that other ARPGs lack, even PoE. Lastly I just want to say that I think the game is a perfect balance between complexity and simplicity. It’s pretty easy to understand all the mechanics since there aren’t THAT many, but they go pretty deep while not overwhelming the player and they don’t shove them all in your face at once. There’s actually a LOT of end game stuff to do and it basically all revolves around combat, instead of doing boring shit like fishing, growing a garden, mining, etc.
@seer6251
@seer6251 Жыл бұрын
I think all your points are agreeable! I can actually appreciate complicated navigation for its thematic purposes. That honestly does enhance the idea that things are very messed up. But it might go a little overboard lol. There's a crazy amount of red herrings, and it's so easy to get lost, even during basic events. But, knowing that I won't soon forget about the map in this game, I can appreciate how they did it. And I wanted to mention the loot filter! I can't believe it kept just slipping my mind, considering it's one the best ones I've seen in a base ARPG. All in all, this game feels like they put fun combat first, and skipped all the distractions (like you said, fishing, gardening lol) and it was refreshing to play. I kept wanting to try out new builds and that really excited me. Only pitfall of that was I haven't reached the final difficulty yet, because I keep wanting to try new things around level 60-70 lol. For the next video, I'll have seen as much as possible.

This game gave me an early access curse. I used to play games to death when in early access but then drop it when I feel burned out and never pick it up again. I think I only completed it twice with 2 different characters and then I am stuck in limbo with rerolls and second guessing myself. This is the best ARPG in my opinion and surely sits comfortably between Diablo 3 and Path of Exile in terms of complexity. The setting initially turned me off and I was unfamiliar with the Titan Quest engine but man when it clicks it will hold you and never let you go.

Overall I love it, and I've only really built one character so far. So many cool things you can do. Maps are kind of an issue, but not that much, with clustered buildings in Malmouth being the only areas really difficult to navigate. As someone who couldn't make up my mind early in the build process, I can say it does get really expensive after a while to keep redoing my skill selection. Roughly every twenty skill points reset ups the cost, and it goes up to like 15-20k bits per skill point reset. It took me several million bits to reset my build when I finally decided what I wanted to do. All equipment is somewhat predictable, as prefixes, suffixes, and base items all provide specific types of bonuses (the value is random, but you will always get pierce resistance with the prefix "impenetrable", and you will have a higher range for the bonus on higher level equipment, for example). The rarity of the equipment is determined by the highest rarity between it's prefix, base, or suffix. So green rarity means it has at least one of a green prefix, base, or suffix, but the game doesn't actually tell you how many or which they are, and they end up appearing fairly frequently. Epic (blue) and legendary (purple, level 50+) equipment usually don't have prefixes or suffixes, but they have powerful, potentially build defining effects. Gutsmasher provides big bonuses to a physical Eye of Reckoning build for example, and converts all fire damage it would do to physical damage. The loot sorter is very good, and at the very least you should make it so yellow and grey equipment don't show up, as they are generally not worth looking at. The most annoying thing I've encountered so far is actually farming monster infrequent recipes, specifically Deathstalker. The farming itself isn't bad, but there is only one Deathstalker when you load in, and you have to go find it, kill it, and hope it drops the recipe with it's low drop rate. If it doesn't, you have to exit to main menu and repeat. Two mods that are extremely helpful (and not invasive to gameplay for those that want to basically play without modded stuff) are the Rainbow Filter mod to make reading and evaluating gear much easier, and Grim Dawn Item Assistant to give yourself some freedom from cramped storage with infinite easily searchable space in another window.
