Are you this bad at fine motor skills and autism? This is how bad I am and I am really struggling with it! FREE AUTISM WEBCLASS 👉🏼 www.theaspieworld.com/freeaut...
Fine motor skills can be very difficult to deal with when you’re on the autism spectrum, comes with part of the autism diagnosis this can be a very difficult thing to deal with
I personally struggle with fine motor skills by putting keys into doors using my insecurity to pick small objects up and trying to do buttons and shoelaces.
This issue with fine motor skills as one of the main reasons why I tend to use slip on shoes or elasticated shoelaces rather than traditional shoelaces.
Issues with motor skills are there are people on the autism spectrum and I am trying my best to come up with ways to help overcome having such issues with fine motor skills.
In this video I’m exploring some of my personal insight and some of the ways in which I am trying to help myself overcome having issues with fine motor skills through practice and fine motor skills activities.
Please like this video share it if you think it can help someone and also leave a comment if you have anything to add I can help.

Maybe different parts of the brain are involved as in speech vs singing, e.g. a person who loses the ability to talk may be able to sing since speech function is in only one part of the brain whereas singing uses many areas.

I never realized this was an autism trait, I wear slip on shoes as well. I don't drive either and people always push me to do it. I admit I feel like a fool at times. I even don't like to admit it. I'm just learning to accept what I can and can't do and try to work around it. Thank you so much for your videos! I'm learning more about myself and this is just incredible. To see others with issues the same as me, I don't feel as bad about it.

Interesting, I also have depth perception problems. I was tested for a work in a factory once when I was young. It was to see if I could drive a fork lift. I could not, because I had no depth perception. My eyes did not blend information together. They both see independently essentially. I have no idea if it is related to anything of this.. but I am certainly curious. I will also say I was born very premature, so could have been related to this.

Omg!!!! I didn’t know issues with fine motor skills is a sign of autism!!! I’ve struggled with my fine motor skills my whole life. I wasn’t diagnosed with autism until I was 13 years old. My fine motor skills have gotten much better as I’ve gotten older. However, I really struggled with learning to write. It took me much longer than my peers to learn to tie my shoes, and I struggled with zippers. It took me so much longer than my peers to master these skills, I started getting picked on. In elementary and middle school, I would constantly loose points on tests because my writing was so illegible. This explains so much. Thank you!!!

I used to do a lot of fine embroidery - my mum taught me as a little kids which helped me with the pincer movement. BUT I trip over my own feet bounce off walls, often drop or juggle my phone. I am in my 50's and I did a lot of fine motor practice as a kid to get my writing right because in those days - no computers..laughs. I would come home from school and practice writing for an hour or so.

I've always gripped my pencil really tightly, and no matter how much I've tried to loosen up over the years, it just doesn't happen! It's the only way I can control my hand enough to write legibly. Typing is as easy as breathing. I got into crocheting very young, and untangling and winding balls of yarn is very soothing, so I got extra practice for shoelaces. One thing I've never been able to do is get my fingers to be able to play guitar - that's just way too much twisting, and it doesn't match at all what the other hand does. Bass was easier, but touching things is my Thing, and I didn't want to get calluses right on the most sensing parts of my fingers!

I just want to say I love your videos. Thank you so much for all you do. I was diagnosed with autism in my adolescents and instead of asking how and in what ways this disorder defines me makes me who I am which I never did research I just assumed I was just weird and out of sorts. It took me a little longer to learn to tie my shoes as a child I had to be taught so many times and I'm still doing it the bunny ear way even to this day. I have a problem remembering my left from my right I have to literally pretend I'm writing something with my right hand to know which direction someone is referring to. Also my handwriting is unreadable half the time I have to spend a great deal of time to make it readable(I don't know if that's a fine motor skill that affects aspies)

Also I'm always being told I have a great poker face because I show no emotion. I don't know if that is an aspies thing or is it just me doesn't relate to this video but I'm generally curious. Hello, I have bad fine motor skills. And my hands are shaking at the end of the afternoon, due to fatigue. So a few years ago, I thought if I try coloring books, they is plenty of them, and sometimes with tiny details. They are fun, and helped, even if I still can't draw a straight line or cut with scissors, it's still a mess. 🙂. And all day long I make things fall. Even if it's bad for my back, I 'm regularly on my knees, because my long clip can't take a piece of paper, or a blueberry on the floor, or rolling things, it often makes me smile because my long clip or my crushes often fall too😊.

Everybody thinks I"m being lazy and sloppy, when I want so bad to have neat handwriting. I practice.. I hold the pen tight.. I hold it loose.. I hold it high, I hold it low.. No matter what I do my handwriting is crap.... Also I have missed many math questions because I couldn't tell If I wrote a 1 or a 7., or a 0 or a 6. On top of that my old boss would yell at me for my bad handwriting. I wish I had better motor skills but I don't..

Definitely have motor skill issues. I tried to play sports when I was younger and my coach gave me an award for trying so hard when I'm so naturally TERRIBLE at it. My handwriting is terrible, I can't do things like video games, my typing is an adventure and a half. I used to cry when I had to type things for class and my mom would type out my papers after I wrote them. Eventually I got into writing fiction and spent so many hours laboriously typing that I can do it acceptable now... but not if you change my keyboard.... I routinely drop and knock over things. Not to mention just running into doors, tables, etc etc

Thank you for posting this because fine motor issues are a real issue for my 6-year-old daughter. It is good to see that as an adult, you still struggle with those issues but are able to find alternate ways to fully function in life. I find that I am constantly advocating for my daughter because of her struggles and I feel that people underestimate her capabilities for the future. It's very discouraging. Have you struggled with others underestimating your abilities as you grew up and if so, do you have any advice for encouraging confidence in kids facing that?

The sound of things brushing up on the fabric from your KZbin Fanny pack sent shivers down my spine lol. I have some Bluetooth ear buds like that too. The casing is cracked on the outside because I've dropped it so many times. But I don't use pinch grip to get them out. The dips the buds reside in are shallow enough and held magnetically that I can push on the front of them and then they'll be out easy enough to grab. Keys are tricky. I focus on the subtle changes in sound and feeling of my movements to get things done usually, taking a page out of blind people's book. Visual comes second to those two other senses for me. Or at least that's how I do it. But if either of hearing or feeling/temperature is overloaded or absent then I'm in for a bad time. I know this doesn't affect you Dan, but playing instrument's like guitar. You need that pinching pressure to make a clear sound.

I have had a preferance for shoes I can slip on since I was a kid, between never getting the bows right and walking three feet only to have to tie it all again and not having the patience I just learned to tie the shoes I have for everyday use in a slightly loose state and dubble knot them (as an adult that is). However as a kid and teen I used elastic shoe laces for a very long time, still wish I knew where to find some locally now because some shoes dont work to keep tied constantly (like winterboots for example). I also have a problem maintaining a grip and will drop things suddenly (like my phone or anything else small I'm carrying or picking up). My hand eye coordination is also very off. I'm not diagnosed with anything yet but I'm on the waiting list for adhd and autism evaluations.

A really important thing that is mistake in fine motor skills with pincher grip (or any kind of grip) is just gripping with too much strength because you're focusing on gripping. The trick is lightening the grip as much as you can by checking if you can feel temperature, texture, etc with the tips of your fingers as you grip. Like close your eyes, and focus on your touch. Only complete relaxation will allow for total sensory mapping of what you're gripping, and when you can totally focus just on the sensations of touch and have the object mapped as much as possible in your sensory awareness, will you be able to move it simply by focusing on the object and not in your hands. Also feeling gravity on certain movements, as the force of gravity influences all your 3d moves in space, and you need to feel its effect to improve motor skills. An example of a movement that incorporates feeling gravity is driblling a basketball ball. The same principles of feeling gravity can be applied to a simple finger tap on a table, or using gravity pulling the pants when undressing the pants. Certain types of movements, you need to feel gravity and let gravity be the force that drives the movement, and your muscles just run a closed loop system counteracting gravity

Interestingly, my daughter, who is on the spectrum, has exceptional fine motor skills. She had exceptional fine motor skills since she was a wee little baby. Her motor skill challenges are more relating to lack of rhythm and gross motor activities. I only mention this so people don't make the assumption that ALL people who are autistic MUST have fine motor skill challenges. Don't think someone who says they have autism is lying if they don't struggle in this particular way.

I don't have issues with grabbing or pressing things together (I played with legos and similar toys a lot so maybe that helped). I do however frequently have two things (one in each hand) and then use the opposite for the thing it is for (aka throwing away the candy bar while holding on to the wrapper). And touch screens can be infuriating. I need that 'click' or my hands just sorta feel like nubs that never push the right letter then auto correct comes in to make it worse.... give us our clicky keyboards back!

Hi Dan. Thank you for such useful and honest videos. You're helping me help my 17 year old daughter with aspergers, amongst other things. You mentioned in one video that you had a psychiatrist. Can I ask exactly what benefit that is to you and how they can help you manage your life better please? Thanks. Sue.

Hey Sue, I’m happy to help!! The psychiatrist basically makes sure that everything is running on in my life ever 6 months. Recently they are in charge of my medication which is helping a ton!! Did you see the free Autism webclass? I think you’ll get lots form it. The link is in the first line of this video description.

Totally have poor fine motor skills. For example I can't type/text as fast as I want to,(I'm using my phone to type); my penmanship is terrible, so I write in all caps so others (and myself) can read it. Not good with buttons,(unless they're large such as the ones on a suit or jacket). I wonder if poor fine motor skills can lead to arthritis in the hands? Because I notice that I'm getting pain in my hand joints when I'm doing things that require fine motor skills. Good video.🙂

Oh my god don't get me started on small or tight buttons it makes me feral. Doing my eyeliner or brows takes me a billion years, but since I do makeup so often I feel lime my fine motor skills are pretty okay. But anything involving small objects (like those demon tiny cooking kits or threading a needle) makes me want to literally freak out. But my depth perception is whats worst. I'll just straight up miss when setting down cups and such

The Aspie World My grandson has Asperger’s and was also diagnosed at 9 months with low muscle tone. Low muscle tone is not just weak muscles but also lack of coordination in using the muscles. He goes to occupational therapy for small motor skills and physical therapy for gross motor skills. He couldn’t crawl when he was 9 months but he could roll anywhere he wanted to go. His legs and core muscles just weren’t strong enough so they couldn’t work well enough to develop his coordination. He got caught up at that time and was doing well until he got older. He seemed fine, but never wanted to ride a bike or swim or ride his scooter because his muscles in his legs and core were again to weak. He began therapy again and has gotten much better. It also affects his handwriting and vision. The eye muscles were not lining his eyes up correctly because they were weak. We discovered this in kindergarten and he began vision therapy. He was reading on a 2nd grade level and liked to read but would get tired very quickly. The vision therapy helped his sight so much and it actually helped his handwriting, coloring and small motor development too. He’s doing great now but when this virus stuff calms down he’ll need to start his therapies again. He also has a hard time with buttons and shoe laces. Therapy helped him master them but it still takes him much longer and he hates to do them. He’s 7.5 yrs. old now. I hate to think how many kids fall through the cracks and get labeled as trouble makers or lazy just because most educators and even Drs don’t know what to look for with the vision thing. It affects so much including motivation and frustration level. He was having aggression problems in kindergarten and my daughter just would not give up on it being more than a behavior problem. God bless her for following her mother’s instinct and pushing for many different tests to get him help. Once the vision thing was addressed the motivation and aggression problems cleared up. He is a sweet child, brilliant and totally interesting to chat with. He has captured my heart forever!
