FTS, I will NEVER live in an HOA community again. I once lived in a gated community that had million dollar homes, I thought I would be comfortable there, but that did not last long at all. One day I popped the hood and was literally just checking the oil before I went on a trip. When I got back I had a warning letter that said basically " Working/repairing vehicles is strictly prohibited!!". I went to the HOA president and explained to him that I was just checking my oil level, that's it. He refused to retract the warning letter, as it "goes against your HOA record!" About two week later, I was cleaning out my trunk and removed the spare tire to really clean the trunk. About two days later I get a $600.00 (yes F'ing $600.00) notice that I have been fined for "working on my vehicle". That was such BS. Luckily my doorbell camera caught everything and I was able to show that I was NOT working on my vehicle and after the board member reviewed it for almost two damn weeks, they cancelled it, but I still had the "warning letter". I said screw that and bought some land, built a house and workshop. No more HOA (Hateful Old A$$holes) for me.

HOA’s can literally make up any rule basically. As long as it’s not found to be discriminatory or targeting for harassment. Basically a huge development company buys a giant plot of land and decides to section it off into lots to build suburban housing. And they organize certain residents to basically “manage the neighborhood” to keep all the houses looking uniform and keep it a “good neighborhood” to encourage more people to want to live there. But a lot of the times it turns into total bs and these people just go in power trips against outlier people who they don’t want in their communities.

When i moved out here to Arizona, virtually every neighborhood has an HOA. It sucks, but its a constant revenue stream for a lot of these developers to open their own HOA, and then milk the neighborhood after they are built up. When we first moved in, they sent me a nastygram about some weeds in the front yard, and tried to fine me $150. I wrote back a legalese heavy letter, sent it certified to their office, explaining that i would not be paying their fine, as i had just moved in, was unsure of what was native vegetation, or part of my landscape, and then quoted several of their own bylaws regarding yard maintenance, and time to correct, and that i had only taken ownership of the home 3 weeks ago, which is not a reasonable time to correct any yard maintenance issue according to their own bylaws, and that i expected to not hear from them regarding the matter ever again. I then, like Parker, went to the next 2 HOA meetings, where i was the ONLY resident present. And the level of ass kissing i received was off the charts. And i have received NOTHING from the HOA other than my receipt ever since then. It is as if i have been placed on a "do not mess with this guy" list, and have not heard a peep out of them since.

Too funny. So much rang true with what you said. I live in Palm Harbor, with an HOA also. For whatever reason my wife is the vice president of the HOA. NO ONE shows up to these meetings. Only board members who are older people. They have no clue to what is going on here. My wife constantly complains about how the board argues over the dumbest stuff and wastes time. My wife just joined to get the playground area refreshed. The other board members think there are no kids here - but much like your area , most houses sold here are families with younger kids as the older people move out. Also, we live like a mile from the water and a boat ramp. HOA says no boats allowed period. I've had mine in the driveway several times for an entire week :). We also tried to change the bylaws but it requires to get a ton of signatures - just not worth it. Our HOA has tried to get an 'enforcement committee' but no success. Go figure, no one in the neighborhood wants to do it. The HOA doesn't want to hike dues to hire someone externally (thank god). We do have laws where you can't park a work truck in the driveway. One resident got fined for that. But they told him he can park it in the street. Does that make any sense? Now his truck is out front blocking the road... I'd rather have it in his driveway. I get the point of HOA's, I don't want people trashing the neighborhood bringing my property value down. But they have got to be sensible. I live next to the water and boat ramp. People should be allowed to bring there boats home to clean. Store in the front yard - no, I'm all for that rule. But in the driveway for a day or 2 - sure go for it. Thankfully I park my truck in the driveway and that is allowed here, but for you - WTF. I have a limited F-150, you also have a very nice truck. Let's be honest, these are nicer then some cars in the neighborhood! In the end, like my HOA it's nothing but old people running them that are completely out of touch. The younger people just don't have the time for this BS so are not involved. Thank god for my HOA my wife is changing that. But for a lot of people that's just not possible.

There are lots of HOAs around where I live, and there is no lawn maintenance or snow removal here (no lawns and no snow).

HOA has rules, you know this before moving there. Why is this always an issue with people?
@Jeekinz Жыл бұрын
Rules are rules, you knew that when you bought the place. Im def not a fan if HOA's but Im also not a fan of people who think they are privileged to do whatever they want.
@surfnet3804 Жыл бұрын
The HOA does have the ability to put a Lien against your property. So you may not be paying now but they can collect when you sell your house. The fine will just keep growing.

So you feel the rules don't apply to you? Why? Move if you don't like them or change the rules and get involved.
@jardog1311 ай бұрын
Should have read the rules and the fine print before you purchased your home.

I was in homestead and we actually had that rule in my moms neighborhood, but it was only apply when the school bus or when the cleaning truck was collecting the garbage all cars must be inside garages and closed. Now the rest of the time and weekends you can had the garage open the cara park in the driveway and even at the side walk for visits but make sure to do not touch the actual sidewalk that was it, but it was funny because it was like the same rule but with logic and reasons behind it

My mum lives in sunny hot Queensland Australia, and she owns her home under an HOA, and she cant get solar installed, and they wont even let her get mini split air conditioner installed. Its almost 40 Celsius every day now and not allowed air conditioning. Also when i go to visit, i have to park in a designated visitor parking area almost 500m away, which as a disabled person is absolutely unreasonable. Why anyone would live under an hoa baffles me.

You agree to the terms, they can tell you what to, or not to do. I do not see a problem with their ridiculous rules to be honest.

One more sub from Perth Western Australia. Park anywhere you like bro. It's your home. Had something similar in regards to parking at a strata set of units.

I would never in my life agree while I'm buying a house to move in a neighborhood with a homeowners association that can tell me anything about my home or yard or anything surrounding my home but you agree dude you read the contract you signed it you bought the house you moved in and now you refuse to follow the rules of something you chose to do you're totally in the wrong man yeah it's a stupid rule but you agreed to it when you bought the house😮

as a gen z crash mechanic, i need a truck and an open garage for all my tools/projects. so what you did was exactly what needed to be done.

When I was looking for a house 20 years ago, there was already horror stories of HOA’s. So that was my first question with every listing and if they had an HOA, I was not interested.
@JohnnyMustasssh7 ай бұрын
Does your truck extend out from the driveway into the sidewalk? If so, that’s probably the violation. The sidewalk is public property. Not an extension of the driveway like so many pickup drivers think.

Even if you dont want to sue them, you should still let them think it is a possibility.
@candlestick62947 ай бұрын
Not sure if you have kids but if you do maybe ask them to go door knocking instead of doing chore for a week they can do that to get the signatures

I’m just gonna say it! You bought a home in a active HOA. You signed the loan papers after receiving the HOA rules and regs. I get that it is frustrating but everyone involved are consenting adults that agree to live under these rules. Move or obey the rules your choice
@Z64bit7 ай бұрын
I think you can sue them for this tbh. Especially if it's not a "junk" car they can't have that much control over what car you want. The house I live in is an HOA and its garage is converted so if that rule was enforced here it wouldn't work out

Not sure but I’ve been told that some HOAs have no real power…to fine or control anything on your property

When we were house hunting the real estate agent was showing us a house. It was a nice house. When she said HOA I immediately said, next. Show us homes in neighborhoods without an HOA.
@rutroh82477 ай бұрын
First problem, you moved into an HOA area. Never buy a home where you pay a fee to have a group of people tell you what you can and cannot do with your own home. Might as well rent. I had a 1 acre lot and received 2 notices in 2 months for it not being kept up. It was a forest, untouched, undeveloped. Sold it for a profit the 3rd month.

Wow! Park in your driveway!! My neighbor down the street has a semi he parks in the backyard! We live in the city!
@TurboThrill857 ай бұрын
Congratulations now. HOAs can’t ban residents from parking personal vehicles, “including a pickup truck,” or work vehicles - that aren’t commercial vehicles - on the property. It also amends part of the law pertaining to parking law enforcement vehicles on the property to include any assigned first responder vehicle.
@OutdoorUnlimitedCooking Жыл бұрын
Delt with the same issue in my Palmetto, FL neighborhood. The term "truck" in most HOA docs is used too broadly as it can define a Chevy Tahoe and a Semi at the same time, quite a difference. Luckily it was ammended to define classes of "trucks" and further language around commercial vehicles with company branding. Good luck brother

I understand how frustrating that must be, but thats how HOA's be. You should be angry at yourself for not reading the terms of their agreement before you bought an entire house inside an HOA.

I’d be curious to know exactly what the bylaws say about trucks. Technically things like the 4Runner, pilot, and the Bronco sport are considered light duty trucks.

I had something g similar happen in my first condo I bought. They had assigned parking and covered . I’m a mobile diesel mechanic and needed my service truck for work. I’d park in my assigned parking and the truck did fight within the lines I got a letter saying I can’t have it here blah blah blah. I went to the meeting and told them they are inhibiting my right to work and make a living to support my family. They never bothered me again lol

About 35 years ago I worked for an older gentleman that had moved to AZ from Sicily. He was "gifted" a Mint-Condition El Camino by his "friends" in the old country.... The vehicle was stunning. (but was about a foot too long to fit in his garage.) His HOA sent him a complaint/fine. His solution was to have Vinnie, Carmine, and Guido stop by their homes, introduce themselves, and discuss the matter.... Complaint was dropped, no fine, and **poof!** instant harmony.
