Do you still use this layout till today (2024)? :) It's hard for me to decide which Layout to go with. For instance, i m far too used to having hihats purely on my right hand, while kick and Snare are on my left (that got engrained into muscle memory). Therefore i have difficulties with playing kick snare AND hihat all on one hand, like in your layout.

Hi Robert, did you setup the pad layout with any HH variation? I meant, if you have the option to use like 25% HH open, 50% HH open, etc.. or you should setup more pads for these HH variatiions. I am really enjoying your free basic finger drumming course.
@TheQuestforGroove Жыл бұрын
Hey, I mostly use one open hi hat variation per song and switch it up depending on what I want to hear. But you can also map a CC variable to one of the rotary knobs on your controller (or in my case also the Touch Bar on the Maschine) this will make it possible to set the openness of the hi hat on the fly. If you're on the questforgroove.com website in the beginner course, the lesson about pad layout at 6 minutes 7 seconds in I talk about this. Here's the url of the lesson: questforgroove.com/course/beginnercourse/basic-setup/pad-layout/

awesome dude! going through the beginners course now on your page and finding it fun. I've played a bit on Melodics but it's so expensive! and now actually finding it much more valuable actually playing in my DAW rather than on a gimmicky peice of software. I found swtiching before that I would sound great in Melodics but be way out of time when working to metronome in DAW, now getting my ear in much better. I think you may have a new Patron..
@TheQuestforGroove5 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Melodics makes reading music a lot more fun, but in the end you still want to close your eyes, listen to the music and play using your ears and your inner clock. And on top of that play dynamically (loud, soft, anything in between). My guess is at some point that requires breaking with melodics. Just like at some point you'll probably break with my lessons as well because you've evolved your playing to a point where you want to explore possibilities yourself. Basically any good musician will do that at some point as well!

@MichaelJ0233 жыл бұрын
All of those have way more features than I want right and are a bit more expensive than I would want to spend right now. I use mine as a midi controller, relying on my various daws for the sounds so I really don’t need what they offer. I think I’ll just look into upgrading my mpd16. Thanks for the info though, might go that route later after I get more proficient.
@MichaelJ0233 жыл бұрын
Update: I easily fixed the sensitivity issue on this mpd16 using a method similar to your other video using some tape on the underside of the pads. On the mpd16 it is super simple! I just took off the cover and the pad sheet is just lying on top of the capacitive sensor film, so I was able to clean the sensor mylar, then put two layers of tape on the underside of the pads and test its responsiveness with the cover still off. Once I was happy with the results I just popped the cover back on. Really nothing to it, and now it works amazingly well.

Can you play Double bass on it? How Do the buttons response? Do they stick to the finger? Aren’t Arcade Buttons much better?
@TheQuestforGroove5 жыл бұрын
You mean double bass drum? Well, yes you can but the thumbs are the slowest part of your hands in this setup. So it might be that you have to switch the kick and snare so you can blast the 'snare' pads that will then be kick drums. ■ Arcade buttons have no velocity sensitivity so no dynamics at all. For some genres it doesnt matter but for most music it does.

Hi!!! Great video. Which pad layout would you reccomend for an 8 pad, with 2 rows of four, in the mpx8 style? Thank you.
@TheQuestforGroove4 жыл бұрын
I would just take the middle two rows of the 4x4 layout. So The left row is (from bottom to top) Kick - snare - open hihat - Tom (and you can replace the tom with any other sound you need) And the right row is: Kick - snare - closed hihat - Tom (or cymbal, or any other sound you need)
@tinentdan4 жыл бұрын
@@TheQuestforGroove So I suppose I would play it in a vertical setup. I will try it. And for a horizontal setup? Now i have a symetrical setup with the bottom row with kick on center and open hi hat on sides, and the top row with closed hi hats on the middle and sbare on the sides. The problem is lack of sounds but its great for fast grooves. 😅
@TheQuestforGroove4 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a good horizontal setup actually! I personally prefer the vertical one just because of my hand position and the spread between fingers, but hey, if It works it works!

nice, can you change the pad layout directly on the mk3? or only on the software?
@TheQuestforGroove4 жыл бұрын
You can change it on the device, but you need to use controller editor software. So you cannot do it with a knob on the device itself but you can change the midi values of all the pads knobs and buttons with that software!

What software or kits do you use for the real drum sounds? Recommend any packs?
@TheQuestforGroove2 жыл бұрын
Yes! XLN Audio Addictive Drums. Get the "Custom" starter pack and then get Black Oyster, Fairfax 1 and Funk kits. Then you have a nice starting point. XLN audio has big sales about 4 times a year so you can also wait until their big summer sale, or a black friday sale and get 40% off.

Which Addictive drum kit are you using? I've been using BFD3, which is awesome, but the kits tend to favor rock, metal and jazz. This kit sounds great for Hip-hop.

Hey, loved the video! I own an mk3 as well, and I'm curious as to how you got to the screen with the labels. Oh, and are you using Drum Lab for the samples? thanks!!
@TheQuestforGroove6 жыл бұрын
Funny you happen to ask that, I'm working on a video about that right now actually. This Thursday I already have another vid planned but the one after that (I think that's June 14) I'll put that one out. What I can tell you real quick is you need to have to get the "controller editor" program from native instruments and then set the thing in midi mode. From there you can edit all kinds of stuff including the names of the pads. The drum software I use is Addictive Drums 2. I like how quickly it sounds good. But drum lab is cool too. Abbey road kits from NI are great as well. Doesn't really matter what you use when you hit the pads right :-) So the complete guide to setting up your maschine in midi mode will follow in about 12 days!

BTW, I released the maschine setup video :-) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZm3iaWNaLl_psU

Where do you get all these great sounding samples?
@TheQuestforGroove4 жыл бұрын
I basically always use Addictive Drums 2. Very novice program that realisticly simulates a drumkit. You need the Addictive Drums "custom" starter pack, and then select the Fairfax 1, Black Oyster and Funk kits. That's what I use! Plus my pad controller in midi mode.

Another question. You use that pad layout for all styles you play or chance it sometimes?

First of all Thanks for the great free resources! One question as im not only a noob on finger drumming but also on maschine's software, how did you recreate the pad layout in Maschine? Struggling with this part, I guess I could also learn it like it is preprogrammed with the kits in their software. Been trying to make your finger drumming excercises till then atleast ;)
@TheQuestforGroove4 жыл бұрын
No i did the pad layout using the device in midi mode and bypassing maschine software. What you're hearing is Addictive Drums 2. If you want to know how to set all of this up, I explain it step by step in my free beginner course on questforgroove.com. You do need an account, but I promise I wont spam you. It really is free.

Hey Buddy, the best thing I can do for you now is refer you to my free beginner course on Questforgroove.com >> questforgroove.com/course/beginnercourse/ I have a guide for the MPD218 and Addictive drums on there, as well as a guide for the Free Steven Slate drum kit ( questforgroove.com/course/beginnercourse/exceptional-situations/other-drum-software-besides-ad2/ ). No guide for MPC software specifically since I do not use it and don't really know how it works exactly. But I hope this will help you!

Hey man Great videos thanks a lot! :D I have one question for my beginning states of this journey. I'm following your set up and fingersetting, but I find it quite hard to hit the hihat soft and the kick drum hard. Do you have any tips for that other than to just practice? All the best Wauwa
@TheQuestforGroove4 жыл бұрын
Yeah if you want to do that with one hand its actually very difficult! With two hands its also hard in the beginning bjt its just a matter of practicing for 5 minutes every day to hit one hand hard and the other one soft. If you want to have a loud kick and soft hh with the same hand (!) You have to use moeller technique. This means your arm moves upward while your wrist moves down and then at rhe same time move your thumb downward as well. Its almost like picking a piece of cloth off of the pads. I explain this in the "advanced techniques" course on my website!

This video is amazing, the only thing I miss is that you could quickly give a hit on each pad so we could sample your samples and know the difference between a cymball1, 2 3 etc . :) Not so important since we can use any set.
@TheQuestforGroove4 жыл бұрын
Hey! I would've gladly done this but it is actually not allowed in the user agreement of the drum software. Everything is rights free except for sharing separate samples from the library. I guess that makes sense since that's what addictive drums is selling :-)

The Quest for Groove makes totally sense, I understand o. But I would like to know the difference of cymbal 1,2,3 on your set so I can find samples that roughly sound the same. I will try to get this audition from your other videos.

Hi Again! Here’s a question: I’ve seen a few finger drummers who get reasonable results drumming on a regular midi keyboard 🎹 rather than using pads. What’s your opinion on doing it that way?
@TheQuestforGroove7 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on your playing style. Some people play on an mpc in a way that resembles playing a piano. They kind of 'walk' over the pads with their fingers. So I guess if you play that way a keyboard might be a possibility. However, I specifically developed a more percussive technique where you use your wrists and arms more. That more resembles the actual 'hitting' that drummers and percussionists do as opposed to the 'pressing' piano players do. Hitting just feels more natural and organic to me when I try and make percussive sounds. :-)

Hi, I know it's been a while since you posted this video, but I'm hoping you would reply. First of all, this video has been very informative so thank you for that. The question I have here is, do you place the same sample unless they're differentiated by numbers? For example, you have two kicks and three cymbals with numbers after them. In this case do you place the same kick samples on different pads and three different type of cymbals in each designated pad?

Yes that's correct! 2 identical snares, 2 identical kicks and 2 identical hi hats and then different toms, different cymbals etc.
