2 minutes in this video and it starts to get funky. Great tip!

Legendary session bassist Carol Kaye highly recommends using a 2 and 4 metronome too. There’s a clip of her making it sound like a seriously funky drummer just by the way she’s playing around it.

As you said it seems pretty straight forward at the start, but trying to copy your groove starts to get hard quickly. After a bit of trying things do get better as your brain and fingers begin to sync up with the metronome. Thanks for sharing this exercise to add to our practice routine.

Wow , when you’re playing faster subdivisions on the kick it makes it all feel faster even though the metronome is slower and it blends in so well , like a stick sound. I play guitar but struggle with rhythm like bass & drums ,learning so much thanks

I always play the back beat like opposite of the metronome, just the first layer of the beat tho, then it goes off. I used to try not to but I just play alot better opposite of it then shifting everything down after like a quater note I guess...lol

Maybe metronome as hihat between hits would be next step? and then you would put kicks and snares around it.
@TheQuestforGroove2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you can also do the metronome klick as the kick drum for example. Lots of different placements, but the thing about the exercise is to always play around it and not on top of it.

As a jazz basist, I've been doing this for years.

Reminds me of what Steve Gadd said about playing to a click. He would just envision percussion-great Ralph MacDonald playing a cowbell.

haha, yes exactly. That's exactly it.

Hey, thanks for a cool channel! Just got Presonus Atom. I was a bit surprised by how insensitive the pads were. Like 30% of my hits are not detected. Is this the general case with these devices? Are there any way to increase the sensitivity? Thanks
@TheQuestforGroove2 жыл бұрын
Hey Thomas. The Atom pads are not the best in the bizz for sure. My current recommendation from 2021 still stands fully: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4CVaHuVeNZqmK8 The bottom line is "get a maschine mikro mk3" because if you go for cheaper devices the quality of the pads will decline more rapidly than the price if you know what I'm saying. The atom might have some small tweaks available, like turning aftertouch off (not 100% sure) but it makes not much of a difference in my experience. The only thing that really makes a difference is where you hit the pads. On the Atom I believe the sides are more sensitive than the middle.

@@TheQuestforGroove Thanks for taking the time to answer! Yes I guess you get what you pay for. I'm using Studio One so I thought I'd try the Atom. But if the Maschine Mikro are a big upgrade for the sensitivity I will consider it! Problem is it's so wide... 🙂 I don't have use for any extra buttons whatsoever, only the pads, but that will be hard to find 😊
