What separates Lenny from other KZbin Aikido people, is that when he shows Aikido, he shows it to you like to a peer, without any Sensei-high-and-mighty mysticism or "this takes 20 years to learn" crap.

YES! And even if it does take 20 years (likely lol) at least you have a sense of what you're aiming for rather than being left in the dark.

Excellent explanation! Not only about technique itself, but also about proper grab, body posture, angles and direction of projection. Many instructors don't know how to explain this things.

Very dangerous techniques. If applied in a street setting, it could potentially cause major damage to the ligaments; you can only stretch a tendon so far, once it snaps, it's permanent. While broken bones heal over time, a broken tendon will never heal 💔 Thank you for your teachings. These lessons are priceless 👌

Thank you Lenny and team for these videos. I really appreciate the way you break these all down. I am learning and hopefully go for my next belt mid year. I find I really lack confidence sometimes in my aikido (often worried about my very sore right elbow) but these videos are really inspiring. They really do make so much sense to me. Your techniques and your team are really fantastic. I hope that one day you could do a seminar in Australia. That would be great.

8:40 - THANK YOU! Far too many techniques, systems, and instructors focus so much on "controlling the weapon" that they forget to control the person operating it and the space in which it operates. 9:31 - I like that the video captured your Uke's instinctive "flinch response"; his head naturally leaned back to protect the eyes...taking much of his energy and intent backward with it. Another good point about moving in is that, _if_ you miss the Yubi Dori, (A) moving in minimizes "wind-up" distance for the punch, and (B) as you step and turn through/past him, his strike...if he manages to connect...will glance off a rotating target that is then moving away from any follow up strikes. Nice little extra with the free hand protecting the face. In American Kenpo, we called it, "Checking," and I've had training partners essentially hand me their fist simply because the check was there to catch it before they even threw. I also loved your "aside" about starting slow and building rapport...and respect...with partners. I know how it is to develop "in tandem" with somebody and reach the point at which comfortably, joyfully, playfully, and respectfully beat the shit out of each other, sometimes even congratulating your partner for tagging you in the face. "Beautiful violence," I love that! (Sadly I also know what it's like to train with assholes who's sense of masculinity is derived from hurting partners through deliberate imbalance of force. All that said, I have a very important question. How long, in your opinion, does one have to train before the idea of reading an attacker well enough and fast enough to capture his fingers specifically, *in motion*, becomes realistic. I understand these techniques are devastating, but it also seems like the necessary precision and timing would make them really easy to screw up. Also, is it just me, or does the, "This to this to this to this...and he's finally down," approach so prevalent in Aikido instruction seem like a waste of time and energy? If the point is to end it as quickly and decisively as possible, then...well...stop playing with your food, and just finish it. LOL! This mindset is something that makes me very excited to see the Combative Concepts application of Yubi Dori. P.S. I do like that Yubi Dori into Irimi Nage, and as awkward as getting into Sankyo always seems, I truly adore following it up with a Kesa Giri! One last thing, when you said, "Hit the thumbs up," my immediate thought after watching this video was, "Hell, no, I'm not handing you my thumb after what you just did with Bob's." ;-)

Once again I have to commend you on a great instructional video, and I must also say as you did, I've never seen yubi dori techniques in any other style than Tenshin. In fact, the first time I saw it was in Under Siege 2 (I believe) and several of the other horrendous Seagal movies since. But never in a dojo.

Thank you Sly Sensei, you make my Aikido better from your vids. I have a better understanding of the continuation of motion during and after a technique is applied. I have big hands also and I believe it helps with joint locks and pins and I believe they help with grip and pressure application. Plus they in a small way a intimidation factor.

I also love your combat hand to hand tactics, very very impressive. I don't know the last video you post was a year ago I wonder if you are coming back? I would really would like that very much!! To check out other ideas that you have along the way you even started bringing in women which is very good now these days women should show power in martial arts some of them really need it..Rene Gracie, is doing the same thing with his wife, and I see you were trying to do that here and there as well.. really hope you come back really do thank you sensei.. I think your videos are great!! If Yubi Dori means finger control. I wish you would have credit where is do. And would have mentioned Professor Wally Jay founder of Small Circle Ju Jitsu. Finger control was his bread and butter. In his videos he talks about grabbing the fingers high crushing the knuckles and making the circle "small". He mentions pushing and pulling.

Yes, Professor Wally Jay did a lot in small circle Jujitsu. My teacher Bernie Lau Sensei, also teaches them as well, many that he got from Prof. Jay and that they developed together. As a police officer Lau Sensei realized a lot of the traditional Aikido way of doing things had to be adjusted for his job as a officer and during undercover.

So what arts are effective? and what arts are not effective? in my opinion, they all are effective and all are not effective depends which work for you or me or others which can be different arts and it depends if you had enough practice in the art(s) and the right way and not the wrong way and 2 each art is a different way but some similar and some the same and it truly depends in a fight who is the better fighter in there method in judging it to opponent(s) method OK and how good each one is which can go either way OK.

There are 2 ways I know of to know what works for you 1 is to find it 2 is meanwhile while you serch the world over to find what works for you is to make what you training in 2 work for you if it works for others it will work for you but the 2nd one takes a lot of years to develop at least 10 years as a matter of speek no one really knows how long but just say at least 10 years the 1st way can happen overnight for it is in you in how you do things the problem is most people do not know what that is and could take little more or a life time to fugure it all out now I like AIKIDO because it brings peace not vilonts in a fight so I would like to train also in it but I live in the country and the neerest school is two far but I ones lived in the city got a lot of training in many arts a lot of them work for me a lot of them I put in training to make them work for me but some just do not work for me the one I train at the moment is mauy thai boxing and J K D most times all my life but have had practice in other arts as said above. i also from time to time train by videos and books in many arts looking for new ones all the time ye true through the net is very good like this video above i am seen today the list of arts i did full-on in all my life is just two big to put here as a list ye true OK

Great! I did not learn finger grabs from my time in Aikido. My Last "Old" Sensi, Aiki Jujitsu (in the 1990's) who helped me take my Aikido and turn it into a self-defence system had some, but I only kind of learned one. When we drilled grabs it was alway followed by a punch from the other hand which is what I was defending against just like you said. He also taught me to eye or throat strike before before blending with the hand - "Taking the Center just like you said. I have been practicing your Kendo Jujitsu strikes you showed us from the Randori video's show showed us. New to me too. I have a question Sir. I noticed in some of the techniques you removed your "Sword Blade" from in front of your face and placed it behind your back just before the through. With great respect....Why? (I want to learn this is not ment as a critique. You are a great Sensi)

I am a master in many arts effective ones I knew which ones in some of them through study OF J K D books I also have my own art self-defence been doing this since I could walk to now 54 years old I do not know in this case if Aikido is effective or not in a real fight I herd it is not effective yet I do not believe that because they should be saying it is not effective for the majority of the people who have little or no practice in aikido at all nevertheless I show you what will work in aikido but 1st i came up in a book by the original founder of aikido called aikido and the dynamic sphere i read the pictures all of them in the book and trained in it that day the writings i only read a little anyway that day i had 2 aggressors attacking me and successfully disarmed them both using Aikido or what i call can be called aikido but it was not any of the techniques i read in picture reading from the book it was something i came up with sper of the moment BUT IT WAS THE BOOK THAT GAVE ME THE IDEA OF IT possibly because of my many years of training in many other effective arts this fight went on for around 1/2 h before they both gave in and surrendered to me i only used 2 techniques each time been attacked for 1/2 h these are the techniques but the aggressors have to charge at you for a attack at least taking 1 step forward to do so as they attempted to punch me by charging at me i grabbed the hand moved out the way of there attack and used there own attacking momentum to pull there hand a side meaning 1 at a time continuously making what i call for them to do the walk of life as they be forced to walk right pass me apparently as they would sometimes fight this and resist i will go with there own flow and reverse the direction and make them sit down to think on it i would tell them both this also so it is as simple as as they through a punch charging at you or taking a step to do that you grab there hand move to the side and pull there hand for the person to walk right past your side so if they put up a fight to resist then just flow with the flow reversing this and get them going backwards to sit down and vice versa again it is as simple as that this worked for at least 1/2 h of combat they were not injured the slightest bit nor was I but if everyone can do this or not I do not know all I know is it works for me I been training from the time i walked to now 54 years old I was around 38 years old at that time when this fight took place yes true i am not kidding you proven for me effective I do not see that it will not be also effective for others with a long time of practising this OK HOPE I HAVE HELPED IN YOUR AIKIDO training.

good video again, not for uke! .....please please please can you shed some light on kokyu......Ive really tried to get to the bottom of this. various throws seem to have that label attached but nobody has been able to explain what it is, what is going on and how you "do" it.........the more I research, the more confused I get and the more woo woo it all sounds. id really like to understand the principle/technique, establish if it's for real and how to develop it into practice without the hit and miss nature of learning techniques ..... saying "breath power" doesn't really help and thats what people seem to say......what the f### is kokyu!? Ive seen videos of Hitohiro Saito, Isoyama etc demonstrating kokyu nage in various forms and it's obvious they have a lot of power but folk say the power in aikido doesn't come from strength, seems like somewhat of a contradiction seeing these guys literally throw people across the room but not using any strength. I know the principles are to harness momentum, add a bit of your own energy and aikido happens but that doesn't help to understand where this kokyu power comes into play :? ....... onegaishimasu
@shidoin53988 жыл бұрын
you won't understand kokyu unless you go to a dojo and train under a skilled instructor. kokyu is a breath throw! when proper distance, timing, and triangulation come together uke will basically throw himself using his own force.
@TheMoodyedge8 жыл бұрын
well yeah, thats what I thought....but aikido techniques generally rely on proper timing and distance....kuzushi and so on..... so that just sounds like a cop out...How can a principle not be explained/articulated using physics and body mechanics? You can understand why it all sounds a bit woo woo when you ask and people cant really tell you what it is. I know what it means......but that doesnt lead any further. its frustrating. Are there physical requirements to apply/use kokyu? Like huge core strength? ?? Generating torque from the center? ?? Strong hips and ankles to twist hard,pushing off the ground??? Im looking for logical pointers. It seems uke throwing themselves is a big problem in aikido which is why it gets slammed so much.....over complient ukes and flashy over the top moves.
@shidoin53988 жыл бұрын
+Aa sou kuzushi: to unbalance.. that is part of kokyu. uke is not throwing himself in kokyu, it is his own force that throws him. example: if you tie a rope to a tree and you pull with all your power and the rope breaks, your own force will cause you to lose balance and throw yourself backwards. make sense?
@shidoin53988 жыл бұрын
+Aa sou you are controlling uke by taking his center. it's hard to explain. it needs to be taught! your body mechanics would be to hold your center, use your hips, bend your knees. where is your body position in relation to his. your not going to throw a attacker 50 feet on the street! that is dojo aikido! uke takes ukemi to protect himself from injury. if you want a mystical explanation, use your KI.

If you look this up they will tell you that B J J and grappling arts are proven to be the most effective arts in the world I would say not necessary that that is true you say but we proved it I say no you did not what you proved is the mejority of the people have no clue to fighting real combat and are not effective at all therefore in a fight, of course, it will all go to the ground but I tell you the truth try taking me to the ground well I do not think there is someone that can and if it goes to the ground well sometimes I take it there to the ground but ground fighting is not the most effective method because you can only pin 1 person at a time while his mate stabs you in the back so on the most effective art is the one that will not take you down and can fight standing effective enough to take on as many as you can this is only effective though to as many as you can take on you might say where do I get my knowleage well freind I took on 7 people in there peak in 1 punch or kick knock out to each could have killed them all easy as but spared them instead with a knockout well how many did everyone else took on in real fights then? I am not bragging I am simply trying to help you understand that you got to practice to be an expert OK and lots of it like years of it.
@ThemisKoutras4 жыл бұрын
Many people say for self defence this has been proven effective and this has not been proven effective i would say so what it is not always the truth both ways you might say but that has been proven i would say OK but did they use a expert in defence and another expert in attack or were there both beginners or was 1 a beginner the other a pro well you get the point now so as anything not proven affective same thing here and from history to today you do not know the pros from the beginners you will say pros have a black belt or beyond i will say yes they have but not if they did not work for it and paid for there belts if so they are no different to white belt so as some people you would say are only white belt well i say yes true but some who are white belt have experience combat and are better then black belt they just did not go for gradings to prove it that is all In order to prove something effective in self defence is to prove it to yourself keep to basic simple direct attack and defence straight to the point of the subject but make sure you have lots lots lots of practice in it if so you be effective if not it will most likely not be effective at all.
